Altar of Fangs Guide for WoW 12.1.5: Bosses, Route, Loot

Altar of Fangs is a three boss dungeon under the Vaults of Atal’Utek on The Coiled Isle. The door is at /way #2509 47.2 67.6, the Mythic+ timer is 29 minutes, and the bosses go Rav’i, The Writhing Coil, Zul’jan. Four things end runs here. Rav’i must never eat Fresh Meat. All three Toxic Atrophy casts must be kicked. The whole party sprints out of Death Rattle tethers at the same time. Every Ritual of the Fang beam gets soaked.

This altar of fangs guide 12.1.5 is split in two because the dungeon is two different jobs. The Heroic half is for players clearing for gear and the campaign. The Mythic+ half is for players pushing a Season 2 key against the clock. Read your half. Skipping the other one is fine, it will not hurt you as much as Rav’i will.

What Patch 12.1.5 Changes Here

Patch 12.1.5, The Promise of Tomorrow, goes live on October 13, 2026, inside Midnight Season 2. The patch notes do not touch the boss kits, so wow 12.1.5 altar of fangs plays exactly like the 12.1 version after the August hotfixes. What changes is why you are here. Timed keys at +10 and above now drop Ascendant Venomstones. Ten of them, used at the Catalyst in Silvermoon City, raise the item level of a fully upgraded Season 2 Hero or Myth weapon, trinket or necklace.

The rest of the patch competes for your evenings. The Unbinding of Kith’ix is a one boss raid that closes the Quel’Thalas and Zul’Aman campaign. The Labyrinth of Kindo’jan is a nine chamber solo run with Valeera. Aqir Invasions hit Eversong or Zul’Aman for ten minutes every hour. The crest cap lifts in the week of October 20. Your keys still decide your vault, so the dungeon stays on the schedule.

The tuning you play against comes from the hotfixes of August 21, 2026. Blizzard decided the dungeon was a bit too sadistic and filed some teeth down.

TargetHotfix
Ravenous DescendantRavenous grants 10% attack speed per stack instead of 20%, and the mob moves 20% slower.

Entrance, Zone and How to Get There

The altar of fangs entrance location sits at the bottom of the Vaults of Atal’Utek, the underground hub of The Coiled Isle, the island east of Zul’Aman that opened with patch 12.1. The vaults have three gates and the dungeon door is deeper inside. Level 90 is required.

  2. Take What Lies Beyond the Fog to cross to Tokka’s Landing on The Coiled Isle.
  3. Pick up The Vaults of Atal’Utek: Altar of Fangs from Lady Liadrin at Tokka’s Landing.
  4. Walk into the vaults through any of the three gates and follow the path down to the dungeon door.
  5. Queue Normal as a follower dungeon through Liadrin if you would rather not meet other people.
  6. Time a +10 or higher to earn Path of Venomous Evolution, the teleport straight to the door.

Boss List, Order and Clear Time

Three bosses on three floors, cleared in a fixed order. The route is linear, so the only real choice is which trash you refuse to fight. A clean Heroic clear takes roughly 20 to 25 minutes. A Mythic+ run has 29.

OrderBossWhereWhat kills you
1Rav’iThe Carnage Pit, floor 1Feeding the boss Fresh Meat
2The Writhing CoilMutation Chambers, floor 2Missed kicks and a slow tether break
3Zul’janThe altar chamber, floor 3Unsoaked beams and venom explosions

Heroic Clear: Boss Strategy

This is the full altar of fangs heroic playbook. No timer, no affixes, no stacking debuffs. The mechanics still kill you, they just take longer to do it.

Rav’i on Heroic

Rav’i is a hydra with a feeding problem. Ravenous Stomp hits the group, drops stalactites that stun anyone standing under them, and throws Fresh Meat onto the Carrion Piles around the room. When its energy fills, Ssscavenging sends it to the nearest pile, where it gains an absorb shield and pulses Carrion Burst until the shield breaks. If that pile holds Fresh Meat, the boss enters Feeding Frenzy and Carrion Burst pulses every 1.5 seconds.

  • The tank drags Rav’i so the nearest pile at full energy is an empty one.
  • DPS swap to the shield the moment it appears, since every second of shield is another Carrion Burst.
  • Players hit by Triple Shot spread out so their poison circles do not overlap.
  • Everyone sidesteps the three acid waves of Regurgitate, which slow you and lower your damage.
  • The tank saves a defensive for Hydrastrike, three heavy hits from three heads.
  • Chunks from Messy Eater do not need soaking on Heroic, so dodge them and move on.

The Writhing Coil on Heroic

The Writhing Coil tests whether your group can kick and run. Synchronized Venom hits everyone and leaves a damage over time effect that ticks for 35 seconds. Toxic Atrophy comes as three casts in a row, and each one that lands lowers group damage by 15% and movement speed by 10%. Vindictive Onslaught combines Burrowing Charge, a line, with Venom Jet, a cone. Tail Scythe slams the tank with a small knockback.

Death Rattle is the real fight. Its group damage grows every second and only stops when the Vine Grip tethers break. Every player runs at least 10 yards away from the boss at the same time. Then Uncoil splits the boss into five Uncoiled Writhes that share its health and fixate players with Spiteful Hunt. When they reform, Undermining sends a shockwave from the center.

  • Three players get one Toxic Atrophy kick each, called by name before the pull.
  • The tank faces the boss away from the group and moves out of the charge line.
  • The whole party runs out together on Death Rattle, because one slow player keeps the damage stacking.
  • Fixated players kite the Uncoiled Writhes while everyone else cleaves them down.
  • Nobody stands in the center when the snakes reform.

Zul’jan on Heroic

Zul’jan runs Ritual of the Fang. Four serpent heads at the edges of the room channel beams into him for 8 seconds, and each beam that reaches him gives Fang Empowered, a permanent increase to his group damage. A player blocking a beam gets Ritual Venom, which explodes after 50 seconds. On Heroic it does not stack.

You remove Ritual Venom by eating Zul’jan’s physical attacks. Bloodletting makes those hits cleanse venom and leave blood pools behind. Chop Down is a two hit tank buster. Boneslicer throws an axe in a line through a player and leaves a 7 second physical bleed. Axegrinder spins axes that bounce around the room.

  • Four players take one beam each before the pull and stand at their head when the cast starts.
  • A player with Ritual Venom steps into Boneslicer or takes a Chop Down hit before the 50 seconds run out.
  • Blood pools go to the edge of the room and never near a beam spot.
  • Everyone without venom dodges Boneslicer and every Axegrinder path.

Mythic+ Push: Boss Strategy

Same three bosses, extra mechanics, and a clock that does not care about your excuses. Every block below stands on its own.

Rav’i on Mythic+

Rav’i opens with Ravenous Stomp, which hits the group, drops stunning stalactites and throws Fresh Meat onto the Carrion Piles. At full energy Ssscavenging sends it to the nearest pile for an absorb shield and pulsing Carrion Burst. A pile with Fresh Meat starts Feeding Frenzy, with Carrion Burst every 1.5 seconds and 30% more attack speed. On a high key that is the wipe.

  • The tank plans every move around the piles and keeps the center free of meat for later.
  • DPS save burst for the shield, because the healer’s job gets harder each second it stays up.
  • Chunks from Messy Eater must be soaked on Mythic+, or they turn into extra Carrion Bursts.
  • Players targeted by Triple Shot spread so the poison circles never stack on one spot.
  • Everyone dodges Regurgitate and the healer dispels its slow and damage reduction where possible.
  • The tank uses a defensive or an external for every Hydrastrike, especially on Tyrannical.
  • Bloodlust goes here if you did not use it on the first big pull.

The Writhing Coil on Mythic+

The Writhing Coil opens with Synchronized Venom, group damage plus a 35 second damage over time effect. Toxic Atrophy arrives in three casts. Each one that lands cuts group damage by 15% and movement by 10%, so it ruins your DPS and your Death Rattle run at once. Vindictive Onslaught chains Burrowing Charge, a line, into Venom Jet, a cone. Tail Scythe hits the tank hard and knocks them back a little.

Death Rattle stacks group damage every second until the Vine Grip tethers snap, and they snap only when everyone runs 10 yards or more from the boss together. Uncoil then splits the boss into five Uncoiled Writhes that share its health. On Mythic+ a Writhe that reaches its Spiteful Hunt target applies Spiteful Venom, a stacking damage over time effect with a damage reduction. Undermining sends a shockwave from the center when they reform.

  • Three named kickers cover the three Toxic Atrophy casts in the same order every time.
  • The healer calls the Death Rattle run, since movement solves it and healing does not.
  • Movement speed cooldowns go on Death Rattle, especially if an Atrophy slipped through.
  • DPS hold burst for Uncoil, because damage to the Writhes is damage to the boss.
  • Fixated players kite, and stuns or slows on the Writhes keep Spiteful Venom off the group.
  • Hold the second lust for this intermission if your group struggles to control the snakes.

Zul’jan on Mythic+

This is the zul’jan boss guide for keys, and the rule is simple. Soak now or explode later. Ritual of the Fang channels four beams into Zul’jan for 8 seconds. Every beam that gets through adds a stack of Fang Empowered, which raises his group damage for the rest of the fight. Soaking gives Ritual Venom, which stacks on Mythic+ and explodes when its 50 seconds run out.

Bloodletting means his physical hits strip Ritual Venom and leave blood pools. Chop Down removes two stacks from the tank. Axegrinder removes two stacks but wastes time. Boneslicer removes all of them, so it is your main cleanse.

  • Assign four beam spots before the pull and stand there before the cast finishes.
  • Players carrying stacks gather in one line to take a single Boneslicer together.
  • The second Boneslicer gets cancelled with Shadowmeld, Invisibility, Feign Death or similar tricks.
  • The healer watches venom timers on the raid frames and ramps before any expiry.
  • The tank rotates a cooldown into every Chop Down and keeps the boss out of the blood pools.
  • Blood pools go far from the beam spots so the next soak is not a swim.
  • Bloodlust goes on the pull, since a fast kill means fewer Rituals.

The Route for Each Mode

Heroic Route

Heroic has no enemy forces bar, so you kill what blocks the path and walk past the rest. Nobody gives out medals for full clears.

  1. Skip the Venom Leech packs at the start and pull only what stands in the path.
  2. Destroy the six Caustic Mist Totems in the first area, because Rav’i stays locked until you do.
  3. Kill Rav’i and take the way down to floor 2.
  4. Stay off the walls and fight only the center and corridor packs in front of The Writhing Coil.
  5. Kill the boss and destroy the four Infusion Totems, which spawn the Ascendant Serpent you must kill.
  6. Grab Unfinished Mixture if you have 25 Midnight Cooking or Alchemy skill, for 3% Versatility for the rest of the run.
  7. Take the right wall on floor 3, skip the left wall, clear past the stairs and kill Zul’jan.

Mythic+ Route

The altar of fangs mythic+ route below follows the standard path. Pull sizes depend on your tank and the affix. Count percent using Mythic Dungeon Tools, because there is no stable raw number to trust.

  1. Skip the opening Venom Leech packs and pull the center room with three Leeches, two Ravenous Descendants, one Twinfang Harrower and four Primal Serpents.
  2. Clear the left and right packs, each with four Descendants, one Serpent and one Ritual Chieftain.
  3. Pull the right side group of two Descendants, three Serpents and one Chieftain.
  4. Clear what is left before the boss, skip the Leeches at the staircase and break all six Caustic Mist Totems.
  5. Kill Rav’i.
  6. Stay off the walls on floor 2 and pull the center pack of five Bloodletters, two High Evolutionists and one Rattling Writhe.
  7. Pull the corridor pack of four Bloodletters, one Evolutionist and one Writhe, then clear the rest to the boss.
  8. Kill The Writhing Coil.
  9. Destroy the four Infusion Totems and kill the Ascendant Serpent, which cannot be skipped.
  10. Drink Unfinished Mixture if anyone has 25 Midnight Cooking or Alchemy, since Mutating Elixir gives 3% Versatility.
  11. Clear the first room of floor 3, take the right wall and skip the left wall.
  12. Clear past the staircase, deal with Ula’tek’s Chosen and the Living Venoms, and kill Zul’jan.

Lust timing has three sensible slots. Use it on the first center pull, on the Writhing Coil intermission, or on Zul’jan. Most groups use it on Rav’i and on Zul’jan, and use the Coil slot only if the snakes keep escaping.

Timer, Affixes and Where Keys Die

The 12.1.5 mythic+ timer for this dungeon is 29 minutes. Some trackers still show 30:00, so trust the in game timer over a web page. Season 2 affixes do not change in 12.1.5.

Key levelWhat you get
+2Lindormi’s Guidance, which adds route markers and lowers enemy damage.
Low keysA rotating Xal’atath’s Bargain modifier.
+7Fortified or Tyrannical, swapping each week.
+10Fortified and Tyrannical together.
+12Xal’atath’s Guile.

Affix trackers list Pulsar with Fortified at +7 and Tyrannical at +10 for the week 12.1.5 launches. On Fortified, pull trash smaller and save stops for Ritual Chieftains and High Evolutionists. On Tyrannical, every Hydrastrike, Tail Scythe and Chop Down needs a tank cooldown, and each Ritual of the Fang is a healing check.

Toxic Atrophy is three casts, not one. Each cast that lands cuts the whole group’s damage by 15% and movement by 10%, which turns the Death Rattle run into a funeral march. Name three kickers before you pull The Writhing Coil, and if one of them is on cooldown, someone else kicks. This mechanic depletes more keys than every other ability in the dungeon combined.

  • Keys die on Rav’i when the tank lets it reach a pile with Fresh Meat and Feeding Frenzy flattens the group.
  • Keys die on the Coil when a Toxic Atrophy lands, the group slows down and Death Rattle keeps stacking.
  • Keys die on Zul’jan when an unsoaked beam stacks Fang Empowered and every later Ritual hurts more.
  • Keys die on trash when the tank pulls two Ravenous Descendants at once and Ravenous Claws keeps stacking.
  • Time also disappears on the Ascendant Serpent, which you must kill and which hits harder than it looks.

Interrupts, Dispels and Crowd Control by Pack

Bring a poison dispel, a soothe and at least one AoE stop. Without them this dungeon becomes a group lesson in regret.

Where It Ranks in the Season 2 Pool

This is a midnight season 2 dungeon sharing a pool with Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Kings’ Rest, Ruby Life Pools and Temple of Sethraliss. Only Ruby Life Pools gives you less time, with 28 minutes. Murder Row gives the most, with 34.

Altar of Fangs does not check your damage. It checks your coordination, three times, once per boss. With three bosses and a linear path it is one of the faster keys when the group listens. Kings’ Rest and Temple of Sethraliss usually stay the harder high keys, but a silent pug will fail here faster than anywhere else.

  • It suits groups with voice chat, three reliable kickers, a poison dispel, a soothe and AoE stops.
  • It suits tanks who plan their positioning, since Rav’i punishes lazy tanks more than any other boss in the pool.
  • It punishes pugs that do not talk, because Death Rattle and Ritual of the Fang need everyone moving together.

For players planning the promise of tomorrow mythic+ weeks, it is a solid vault key at +10 because Venomstones make the timed run worth more than before.

Lore: What the Altar Is

Long ago the Amani sealed the Vaults of Atal’Utek and the creature inside, Ula’tek, using a cursed dagger called the Fang of Ula’tek. The altar is where that seal was made, and the dagger is the only key that can open it. Zul’jan, pushed by the spirit of Hex Lord Malacrass, brings the Fang back to the altar to free Ula’tek and restore Amani glory.

In the campaign, Lady Liadrin and Orweyna chase him down while Zul’jarra lies wounded and needs the dagger back. The dungeon closes that chapter, Ula’tek waits as the final boss of The Venomous Abyss, and 12.1.5 moves the story to Kith’ix, the bug god the Amani never quite managed to kill.

How many bosses are in Altar of Fangs?

Three bosses fought in fixed order, Rav’i first, then The Writhing Coil, then Zul’jan in the altar chamber.

What is the Mythic+ timer for Altar of Fangs?

The keystone timer is 29 minutes, and some older trackers still wrongly list it as a 30 minute dungeon.

Did patch 12.1.5 change Altar of Fangs?

No boss changes arrived, but timed +10 keys now drop Ascendant Venomstones for upgrading weapons, trinkets and necklaces.

Where does The Writhing Brood mount drop?

It drops from Zul’jan on Mythic or Mythic+ difficulty only, never from Normal or Heroic runs of the dungeon.

Which spell must be interrupted on The Writhing Coil?

Toxic Atrophy, all three casts, since each one cuts group damage by 15 percent and movement by 10 percent.
