WoW Altar of Fangs Mythic+ Boss Guide Season 2
This Altar of Fangs guide exists because your group keeps dying to a hydra with a food addiction. It is a three boss dungeon, level 90 required, and it takes exactly three brain cells to clear if you use them in the right order. The bosses, fought in this order, are Rav’i, The Writhing Coil, and Zul’jan.
The Mythic+ timer sits at 29 minutes, which sounds generous until your tank pulls the wrong Carrion Pile and the whole run turns into a eulogy. Every fight here punishes standing still, so if that is your specialty, go play a different game.
Where You’re Even Going
The dungeon sits inside the Vaults of Atal’Utek, buried in Atal’Utek on the Coiled Isle. Three entrances exist so nobody has an excuse for being late. If you time it on a keystone level 10 or higher, you get a permanent teleport, which is the game’s way of admitting the walk in was never worth doing twice.
Boss 1: Rav’i
Rav’i is a three headed hydra who has survived down here by eating whatever falls in. The entire fight is one argument between you and a very hungry animal, and if the animal wins, it becomes unkillable for a while. Do not let her eat Fresh Meat. That is the whole guide, but here is the long version anyway.
- Rav’i periodically casts Ravenous Stomp and it drops Fresh Meat onto some of the four Carrion Piles around the room.
- When her energy runs out she sprints to the nearest pile and starts Ssscavenging, which shields her and ticks Carrion Burst on the whole raid every three seconds.
- If that pile happens to have Fresh Meat on it she upgrades into Feeding Frenzy and the same Carrion Burst now ticks every 1.5 seconds, because apparently regular suffering was not fast enough.
- Tanks need to eyeball all four piles and steer her toward the clean one every single time, since dragging her onto a Fresh Meat pile is how healers quit the game.
- While she eats she is a Messy Eater, flinging chunks of meat that explode into extra Carrion Burst if nobody catches them, so damage dealers exist to soak this garbage on purpose.
- She also fires Triple Shot at three players, so if you are standing in a clump you deserve the follow up damage.
- Her signature move is Regurgitate, three lines of acid vomit that slow and weaken anyone dumb enough to stand in them.
| Ability | Who It Hits | Your Job |
|---|---|---|
| Hydrastrike | Tank | Standard melee pain, keep cooldowns up. |
| Ravenous Stomp | Everyone, stalactites | Move out of the falling rock circles. |
| Triple Shot | Three random players | Spread so the pulsing damage doesn’t chain. |
| Regurgitate | One player, line | Sidestep the acid waves, all three of them. |
| Scent of Blood | Rav’i, self | Attack speed buff if she smells Fresh Meat nearby. Reason number 400 to deny it. |
Boss 2: The Writhing Coil
The winner of a very ugly sibling rivalry, The Writhing Coil ate the rest of its brood and got strong doing it. This fight rewards people who can walk backward in a straight line, which statistically is fewer people than you’d hope.
- Basic rotation is Vindictive Onslaught on the group and Tail Scythe on the tank, and both hit like a truck.
- Vindictive Onslaught alternates between Burrowing Charge, an obvious line you have no excuse to eat, and Venom Jet, a cone that becomes brutal once you’re slowed.
- The boss also stacks Toxic Atrophy on everyone via Preparing Toxin, cutting your damage and speed, which is exactly when it decides to test your footwork.
- Eventually it channels Death Rattle, escalating group damage that will not stop on its own.
- Orweyna hands the party Vine Grip, and everyone attached needs to physically walk away from the boss to force Uncoil, which is the only way to stop the cast.
- Once Uncoiled, the boss splits into The Uncoiled Writhe adds that fixate on players with Spiteful Hunt, applying stacking Spiteful Venom if they reach you.
- Kill or control the snakes fast, because they eventually cast Assimilation and merge right back into one angry boss with all your effort undone.
Interrupting Death Rattle is not optional and it is not a suggestion for the healer to handle alone. If nobody walks the Vine Grip out in time, the group eats an unbroken escalating hit that gets worse every second, and by the time someone remembers what a positioning check is, you are looking at a wipe screen instead of a boss kill.
Ignore anyone claiming the trash between phases has a fixed name worth memorizing, since half of it is generic serpent fodder and wowhead hasn’t nailed down separate pages for every add yet.
Boss 3: Zul’jan
Zul’jan is the troll who thought reviving an ancient horror was a personality trait. He fights with a cursed dagger, several axes, and a complete disregard for your positioning.
- On pull he opens with Ritual of the Fang, channeling beams that someone in each beam needs to intercept.
- Standing in the beam grants stacking Ritual Venom, and letting that timer expire unremoved deals a burst hit that can one shot you at high stacks, so do not hoard this debuff like it’s a collectible.
- Failing to intercept the beams lets Zul’jan gain Fang Empowered stacks, which just means everyone takes more damage for being lazy.
- Axegrinder sends spinning axes bouncing around the room, and you dodge the initial path and then dodge it again as it ricochets, because the game likes repeating jokes.
- Bloodletting triggers off his physical hits and strips Ritual Venom stacks, but it also paints a blood pool on the floor that ticks damage, so use it deliberately near the edges and not in the middle of the room.
- Boneslicer is a thrown axe that hits the line behind the target and removes your Ritual Venom too, so being targeted by it is annoying but occasionally useful.
- Tanks eat Chop Down repeatedly, so keep a defensive on hand for the whole fight, not just the scary parts.
Loot and Why You Care
Every keystone completion pays out gear, and the full drop table is long enough to bore a loot goblin to death, so here is the shortlist. Farming the Writhing Brood mount off Zul’jan requires Mythic or Mythic+ difficulty, and yes, everyone in your group will need it eventually whether they admit it or not.
| Item | Slot | Boss |
|---|---|---|
| Coiled Fangstone | Trinket | Rav’i |
| Knot of Writhing Serpents | Trinket | The Writhing Coil |
| Tattered Amani War Banner | Trinket | Zul’jan |
| Pattern: Snakeskin Lining | Tailoring Recipe | Zul’jan |
Mythic+ Notes Nobody Reads Until It’s Too Late
Altar of Fangs is one of eight dungeons in the WoW Midnight Season 2 dungeons rotation, and it is brand new, which means the first few weeks of pugs will be a controlled chaos experiment. Push toward the Keystone Hero: Altar of Fangs achievement once you can survive Rav’i without feeding her by accident, since a level 10 timed clear earns it along with that teleport shortcut. Respect the Altar of Fangs Mythic+ timer, respect the Vine Grip mechanic, and stop standing in the acid.
