Fire Mage Guide 12.1.5: Sunfury and Frostfire Builds, BiS and Tier Set
Fire Mage in 12.1.5 is Sunfury for raid, Mythic+ and most of PvP, and Frostfire for people who enjoy parsing grey in prettier colors. Patch 12.1.5 ships zero Fire changes, so the 12.1 talents, the Pyroclasm tier set and the rotation carry over untouched. Stats go Intellect, Haste, Versatility and Mastery, with Critical Strike dead last. Your first 10 Ascendant Venomstones go into the weapon.
The Promise of Tomorrow goes live October 13, 2026 in NA and a day later in EU, inside Midnight Season 2. It brings the one-boss Unbinding of Kith’ix, the nine-chamber Labyrinth of Kindo’jan, hourly Aqir Invasions in Eversong or Zul’Aman, and Ascendant Venomstones from the week of October 20. Below is the Fire Mage guide 12.1.5 players actually need, split by Hero Talent tree, because you picked one tree and will not read the other half anyway.
What Patch 12.1.5 Changes for Fire Mage
Nothing. The official 12.1.5 notes fix a pile of Frost and Frostfire bugs that only affect Frost, add Arcane visuals, and walk past Fire without eye contact. Your live tuning is still 12.1 plus the September 22 hotfix, which doubled Meteor damage over time outside PvP and raised the Flamestrike bonus of Burden of Power to 6% and of Dualcasting Adept to 15%.
What does change is the world around you, and most of it wants your time:
- From the week of October 6, Orin Straylight in Silvermoon trades gold, Voidlight Marl or Veteran Mistcrests for one extra Nebulous Voidcore bonus roll per week.
- The week of October 13 he offers the quest Ancient Depths, Ancient Venom, and the week of October 20 he hands out Ascending with Venomstones while the crest cap is lifted.
- The Unbinding of Kith’ix has Story, Raid Finder, Normal, Heroic and Mythic, with Mythic using a flexible 15 to 25 player roster and Lady Liadrin fighting next to you.
- Kith’ix loot drops at Veteran, Champion and Hero 3/6 on the lower difficulties, and the latest PTR build cut Mythic from 344 to 324 (Myth 3/6), so check the live journal before you plan around it.
- The Labyrinth of Kindo’jan is a Delve-style mega-dungeon with Valeera Sanguinar as companion, Mythic gear at the end, and the option to clear it one wing at a time.
- Aqir Invasions run for ten minutes every hour, and the Web Weavers affix punishes every mage who forgot Counterspell exists.
- Reaching 3600 Mythic+ rating in Season 2 now awards the Venomous Contender title and the Timelost Saddle.
Sunfury vs Frostfire: The Two Hero Talent Trees
Fire gets two Hero Talent trees. Pick before you read anything else, because the rest of this guide is written twice.
Sunfury
Sunfury summons an Arcane Phoenix with every Combustion and feeds it Spellfire Spheres, which you generate by consuming Hot Streak. The Phoenix eats the Spheres for bonus spell damage through Codex of the Sunstriders, Glorious Incandescence drops Meteorites that shave Fire Blast cooldown, and Memory of Al’ar hands you a short Hyperthermia window after Combustion. It is the tree for raid, Mythic+ and most rated PvP.
Frostfire
Frostfire swaps Fireball for Frostfire Bolt, turns Fire Blast into Frostfire damage through Heat Sink, and makes Meteor call down a Comet Storm while granting Frostfire Empowerment. Duality lets Pyroblast fire a Glacial Spike. It is a raid and PvP niche pick at best, and in Mythic+ it is a museum exhibit.
| Tree | Core engine | Raid | Mythic+ | PvP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Sunfury | Phoenix, Spellfire Spheres, Hyperthermia after Combustion | Best choice | Best choice | Most played, 68% of top rated Fire |
| Frostfire | Frostfire Bolt, Empowerment procs, Meteor plus Comet Storm | Playable, clearly behind | Not competitive | Viable minority pick |
Sunfury Talents: Raid, Mythic+ and PvP
The Fire Mage 12.1.5 talents are the 12.1 talents with a new date on them. Import a string, check the swaps, stop theorycrafting a patch that did not touch you.
Sunfury Raid Build
The standard Sunfury Fire Mage build for raid does the best single target and still cleaves when the boss brings friends, without a single swap.
C8DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYGGLzMzswMDZmZGAAAGAwMz0sstMDAwmZmx2MzMzYDAAAAAbmZMzAAgZMmZmZMzsMAMzAMGwMMGA
- Kindling locks Combustion to a flat one minute cooldown.
- Blast Zone puts Meteor on a 30 second cooldown, so exactly one Meteor fits between Combustions.
- Pyroclasm is mandatory because the tier set is built entirely around it.
- Burnout detonates your active Ignites for 75% of their remaining damage when Combustion ends.
- Burn It All adds spell damage during Combustion and converts extra crit chance into more spell damage.
- All four ranks of Fired Up are taken, since the Fire Blast refunds carry Combustion.
- Scorch stays in the build as your movement filler and your execute spell below 30% health.
Sunfury Mythic+ Build
The Mythic+ string trades a little raid polish for dungeon utility while keeping the same damage core.
C8DAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAYGGLzMzsgZGZmZGAAAAAmZmmltlZAA2MzM2mZmZGbAAAAAYzMjZGAAMjxMzMjZmlBgZGMjxAmhxA
- Keep Remove Curse and Improved Counterspell for keys with curses and dangerous casts, and drop them where the route does not need them.
- Greater Invisibility into Incantation of Swiftness buys extra movement speed for routes full of running.
- Improved Conjuration cuts 30 seconds off Mirror Image, which helps drop threat on big pulls.
- Fuel the Fire must be talented, otherwise Flamestrike is not worth pressing.
- The same string is the recommended Delve and Labyrinth build, so it also covers Kindo’jan.
Sunfury PvP Build
Sunfury is the tree most rated Fire Mages queue with in Season 2. The honor talent core is Overpowered Barrier, Improved Mass Invisibility and Master Shepherd.
- Overpowered Barrier doubles Blazing Barrier absorption and reflects absorbed damage, which makes it the first pick every game.
- Improved Mass Invisibility cuts Mass Invisibility to roughly a one minute cooldown and saves healers from crowd control.
- Master Shepherd stops Polymorph from healing the target and gives you Versatility and speed while it holds.
- Ice Wall replaces Master Shepherd when you need to break line of sight between a healer and the kill target.
- Temporal Realignment, Dragon’s Breath, Ring of Frost and Spellsteal are the class tree picks you never leave home without.
- Merely a Setback keeps barrier bonuses up for 8 extra seconds and stops Cauterize from burning you, which makes Sunfury the sturdier PvP tree.
Sunfury Swaps
- On static raid bosses you can drop Scorch, but only if you trust your movement more than your healers trust you.
- Swap Greater Invisibility and Incantation of Swiftness for Remove Curse or Improved Counterspell when the raid needs dispels or kicks.
- Mass Polymorph and Ring of Frost share a choice node, so take Ring of Frost for Mythic+ stops and PvP, and Mass Polymorph for crowd control checks.
- Cinderstorm is undertuned and stays unpicked in every content type.
Frostfire Talents: Raid, Mythic+ and PvP
A Frostfire Fire Mage 12.1.5 player inherits the same spec tree as Sunfury and a hero tree Blizzard left untouched in both 12.1 and 12.1.5. No current public import string exists for it, which is its own review. Import the Sunfury raid or Mythic+ string, switch the hero tree to Frostfire in game, then apply the changes below.
Frostfire Raid Build
- Kindling keeps Combustion on a flat one minute cooldown.
- Blast Zone keeps Meteor at 30 seconds, and every Meteor now also drops a Comet Storm and grants Frostfire Empowerment.
- Pyroclasm stays mandatory because the tier set still runs on it.
- Burnout and Burn It All stay in for the same Combustion payoff Sunfury gets.
- All four ranks of Fired Up are taken.
- Drop Scorch as a damage spell, because casting it over Frostfire Bolt loses damage even in execute.
- Take Duality, Molten Chill, Elemental Conduit, Heat Sink, Dualcasting Adept and Blast Radius in the hero tree, since every one of them is pure throughput.
Frostfire Mythic+ Build
- Start from the Sunfury Mythic+ string, switch the hero tree, and keep the same utility block.
- Keep Remove Curse and Improved Counterspell where the dungeon demands them.
- Blast Radius and the Meteor plus Comet Storm combo are your only real pack damage, so never skip Blast Zone.
- Fuel the Fire stays talented for Flamestrike.
- Expect to be the only Frostfire Fire Mage in the top rankings, since only a handful of characters above 2900 rating play it.
Frostfire PvP Build
Frostfire holds roughly a third of rated Fire players, so it is a real PvP option. The honor talent core is identical: Overpowered Barrier, Improved Mass Invisibility and Master Shepherd.
- Overpowered Barrier doubles Blazing Barrier absorption and reflects absorbed damage, and you take it every game.
- Improved Mass Invisibility drops the cooldown to roughly one minute and protects your healer from crowd control.
- Master Shepherd stops Polymorph from healing the target and grants Versatility and speed.
- Ice Wall replaces Master Shepherd when the plan is cutting line of sight to a healer.
- Temporal Realignment, Dragon’s Breath, Ring of Frost and Spellsteal remain the class tree core.
- You lose Merely a Setback, so Frostfire is squishier, and the trade only pays off when the Meteor and Comet Storm burst lands on a stunned target.
Frostfire Swaps
- Swap Greater Invisibility and Incantation of Swiftness for Remove Curse or Improved Counterspell when the raid needs them.
- Mass Polymorph and Ring of Frost share a node, so choose by content exactly as Sunfury does.
- Keep Scorch talented only if a fight forces constant movement, and use it purely while moving.
- Cinderstorm stays undertuned and unpicked.
Sunfury Rotation and Priority
The Fire Mage rotation Midnight players run is still the same crit chain: Fireball into Pyroblast, Fire Blast to turn Heating Up into Hot Streak, and Combustion every minute. Sunfury adds the Phoenix, the Spheres and a short Hyperthermia window on top.
Opener
- Hard cast Pyroblast before the pull so it lands as the boss engages.
- Hold Combustion until the target drops below 90% health, because Firestarter already makes Fireball and Pyroblast crit above that line.
- Cast Combustion near the end of a hard cast, ideally a Pyroclasm Pyroblast, then chain Pyroblast and Fire Blast.
- Cast Meteor with 2 to 8 seconds of Combustion left so it lands inside the window and feeds Burnout.
- When Combustion ends, spend Hyperthermia on instant Pyroblasts, then return to the filler loop.
Single Target Priority
- Cast Combustion on cooldown, timed at the end of a hard cast.
- Cast Meteor as soon as it is ready, and skip that use if you had to delay it more than 10 seconds.
- Cast Pyroblast with Hot Streak right as a Fireball finishes so both land together inside the 0.2 second grace window.
- Hard cast Pyroblast the moment Pyroclasm procs outside Combustion.
- Cast Scorch with Heat Shimmer when you have no Hot Streak.
- Cast Fire Blast to convert Heating Up into Hot Streak.
- Cast Scorch as filler below 30% target health.
- Cast Fireball as filler at all other times.
AoE Priority
- Replace Pyroblast with Flamestrike at 4 or more targets, both inside and outside Combustion.
- Never cast Flamestrike while Firestarter is active above 90% health.
- Never replace a Fireball with Flamestrike, only replace Pyroblast.
- Hard cast Flamestrike on Pyroclasm, which the tier set now makes a guaranteed crit.
- Stay on Pyroblast at any target count when one priority target matters more than the pack.
Cooldown Windows
- Combustion every 60 seconds summons the Arcane Phoenix, which consumes your Spellfire Spheres.
- Enter Combustion with three Spheres, because Savor the Moment extends it by 0.8 seconds per Sphere up to 2.4 seconds.
- Fire your on use trinket and Light’s Potential with Combustion, and line up Vile Vial of Volatile Venom with every second Combustion.
- Time Warp goes on pull unless your raid leader has a better plan, which is rare.
- Burnout needs your largest Ignites alive at the moment Combustion expires, so Meteor late is the only adjustment it asks for.
What to Never Clip
- Never overcap Fire Blast charges, because a wasted charge costs more than any lost proc.
- Never overwrite a Hot Streak with another crit.
- Never let Meteor land after Combustion ends.
- Never hard cast a Pyroclasm Pyroblast during Combustion while holding two or more Fire Blast charges.
- Never walk into Combustion holding a Pyroclasm proc, spend it on the cast that leads into Combustion.
What Sunfury Changes About the Core Loop
Sunfury Execution makes Meteor grant Pyroclasm and raises its damage, so every off cooldown Meteor between Combustions becomes a free tier set payoff. Pyrocosm lets Fireball summon Meteorites, each one cutting Fire Blast cooldown by 0.5 seconds, and Memory of Al’ar gives a 5 second Hyperthermia after Combustion for a mini burst. Ashes of Inspiration no longer grants Lesser Time Warp in 12.1, it now feeds Mana Cascade from Phoenix casts, so do not plan haste windows around it.
Frostfire Rotation and Priority
Frostfire keeps the crit chain intact: Frostfire Bolt into Pyroblast, Fire Blast to convert Heating Up into Hot Streak, Combustion every minute. It removes the Phoenix and the post Combustion Hyperthermia, and replaces them with Frostfire Empowerment procs and the Meteor plus Comet Storm combo.
Opener
- Hard cast Frostfire Bolt or Pyroblast before the pull so it lands on engage.
- Hold Combustion until the target drops below 90% health while Firestarter is active.
- Cast Combustion at the end of a hard cast, then chain Pyroblast and Fire Blast.
- Cast Meteor with 2 to 8 seconds of Combustion left so the Meteor and the Comet Storm land inside the window.
- Spend the Frostfire Empowerment from Meteor on an instant Frostfire Bolt before Combustion ends.
Single Target Priority
- Cast Combustion on cooldown, timed at the end of a hard cast.
- Cast Meteor as soon as it is ready, and skip that use if it slipped more than 10 seconds.
- Cast Pyroblast with Hot Streak right as a Frostfire Bolt finishes so both land together.
- Hard cast Pyroblast the moment Pyroclasm procs outside Combustion.
- Cast an instant Frostfire Bolt whenever Frostfire Empowerment is up.
- Cast Fire Blast to convert Heating Up into Hot Streak.
- Cast Frostfire Bolt as filler at every health range, including execute.
- Cast Scorch only while moving, because it loses to Frostfire Bolt everywhere else.
AoE Priority
- Replace Pyroblast with Flamestrike at 4 or more targets, both inside and outside Combustion.
- Never cast Flamestrike while Firestarter is active above 90% health.
- Never replace a Frostfire Bolt with Flamestrike, only replace Pyroblast.
- Spend Frostfire Empowerment on packs, since the empowered bolt explodes for area damage.
- Hard cast Flamestrike on Pyroclasm for the tier set guaranteed crit.
Cooldown Windows
- Combustion every 60 seconds is your only major window, and Meteor with Comet Storm is the only thing that makes it look Frostfire.
- Fire your on use trinket and Light’s Potential with Combustion, and pair Vile Vial of Volatile Venom with every second Combustion.
- Time Warp goes on pull unless told otherwise.
- The Meteor between Combustions is a full burst of its own for Frostfire, so never delay it hoping to save it.
What to Never Clip
- Never overcap Fire Blast charges.
- Never overwrite a Hot Streak.
- Never let Meteor land after Combustion ends.
- Never sit on Frostfire Empowerment until it expires, because the instant bolt is a large share of your damage.
- Never hard cast a Pyroclasm Pyroblast during Combustion while holding two or more Fire Blast charges.
What Frostfire Changes About the Core Loop
Frostfire Bolt is a slightly faster filler than Fireball, so the loop feels quicker for less damage. Duality gives Pyroblast a 25% chance to fire a Glacial Spike, Elemental Conduit lets Comet Storm, Glacial Spike, Pyroblast and Meteor apply Ignite and adds 8% Haste, and Heat Sink turns Fire Blast into Frostfire damage. Meteor grants Frostfire Empowerment instead of Pyroclasm, which is exactly why the tier set favors the other tree.
Stat Priority Per Tree
The Fire Mage stat priority Midnight theorycrafters agree on is short: Haste first, Crit last, everything else a coin flip you settle with Raidbots Top Gear. There is no Haste cap and no breakpoint, only diminishing returns.
Sunfury Stats
Intellect, then Haste, then Versatility and Mastery nearly tied, then Critical Strike. Haste speeds the cast loop, shortens Fire Blast recharge and accelerates Sphere generation, so Sunfury wants as much as gear allows. Crit still turns into Mastery value during Combustion, which is the only reason it is not worthless.
| Stat | 10% DR | 20% DR | 30% DR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haste | 1320 | 1760 | 2200 |
| Mastery | 1380 | 1840 | 2300 |
| Critical Strike | 1380 | 1840 | 2300 |
| Versatility | 1620 | 2160 | 2700 |
Frostfire Stats
Intellect, then Haste, then Mastery, then Versatility, then Critical Strike. Top Frostfire players stack Haste and Mastery over Versatility, because Molten Chill and Elemental Conduit push more of your damage into Ignite. Crit sits last for the same reason it does on Sunfury: Fire already guarantees too many crits for the stat to matter.
| Stat | 10% DR | 20% DR | 30% DR |
|---|---|---|---|
| Haste | 1320 | 1760 | 2200 |
| Mastery | 1380 | 1840 | 2300 |
| Critical Strike | 1380 | 1840 | 2300 |
| Versatility | 1620 | 2160 | 2700 |
Tier 36 Set: Season 2 Pyroclasm Bonuses
The Fire Mage tier set Season 2 gave us is a Pyroclasm delivery system and nothing else. It forces every endgame build into Pyroclasm, which you either love or quietly resent.
- The 2-piece bonus makes Pyroblast and Flamestrike always critically strike when cast with Pyroclasm.
- The 4-piece bonus cuts Pyroclasm Pyroblast and Flamestrike cast time by 20% and raises the Pyroclasm damage bonus by 20%.
- Pyroclasm itself now lasts 20 seconds instead of 15 and holds two charges.
How Sunfury Uses the Tier Set
Sunfury gets the most out of it. Sunfury Execution makes every Meteor grant Pyroclasm and adds another 20% to its damage, so the off cooldown Meteor between Combustions turns into a guaranteed crit hard cast that the 4-piece buffs again. Inside Combustion the 2-piece does nothing because everything already crits, so consume procs before Combustion and only spend new ones when you hold one Fire Blast charge or fewer. Treat the 4-piece as mandatory and the 2-piece as a modest outside Combustion gain.
How Frostfire Uses the Tier Set
Frostfire gets less. Its Meteor grants Frostfire Empowerment, not Pyroclasm, so its procs come only from consuming Hot Streak, which means fewer guaranteed crit hard casts per minute. The 4-piece is still the strongest bonus you can equip, and the 2-piece is still a small non Combustion gain, but the set is worth noticeably less here than on Sunfury. Rush the 4-piece anyway, because the alternative is having neither the tree nor the set.
Which Venomous Abyss Boss Drops Which Token
| Boss | Tier slot | Cloth token |
|---|---|---|
| Entombed Sentinels | Hands | Hands token |
| The Lost Explorers | Shoulders | Venomwoven Remnant |
| Vashnik the Malignant | Chest | Venomwoven Icon |
| Sszorak | Legs | Venomwoven Relic |
| The Twin Fangs | Helm | Venomwoven Effigy |
| Ula’tek | Any slot | Slumbering Coil Curio |
Fastest Route to 4-Piece
- Kill bosses two through six every week on the highest difficulty you can survive, since they carry all five slot tokens.
- Kill Ula’tek for the Slumbering Coil Curio and trade it for whichever slot refuses to drop.
- Catalyst any off piece from Mythic+ or the Great Vault into the missing tier slot.
- Spend the new weekly Nebulous Voidcore bonus rolls on token bosses until 4-piece, and only then switch them to Ula’tek.
- Ignore Kith’ix for set progress, because it drops no tier tokens.
Catalyst items in 12.1 keep their original stats and special effects. Fire’s best long term head, shoulders, chest, gloves and legs are cantrip items like Venomkeeper’s Horrific Cowl, Ornaments of the Eternal Coil, Primordial Robe of Rites, Grasps of the Eternal Shadow and Initiate’s Sacrificial Tights, so get any 4-piece first, then catalyst the cantrips into tier slot by slot.
BiS Gear Per Tree
Fire Mage BiS 12.1.5 lists did not move, because the patch added Kith’ix loot and no Fire tuning. Item level still beats the list, so sim before you trade a 324 piece for a 311 BiS item out of loyalty.
Sunfury BiS
| Slot | Item | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Head | Venomkeeper’s Horrific Cowl | Venomous Abyss, Ula’tek |
| Neck | Pendant of Malefic Fury | Season 2 Mythic+, Murder Row |
| Shoulders | Ornaments of the Eternal Coil | Venomous Abyss, The Twin Fangs |
| Cloak | Silken Voodoo Drape | Venomous Abyss, The Coiled Altar |
| Chest | Primordial Robe of Rites | Season 2 Mythic+, Altar of Fangs |
| Wrist | Martyr’s Bindings | Crafted |
| Gloves | Grasps of the Eternal Shadow | Venomous Abyss, The Coiled Altar |
| Belt | Caustic Chain-Wrapped Sash | Venomous Abyss, Sszorak |
| Legs | Initiate’s Sacrificial Tights | Venomous Abyss, Nek’zali the Soulcoiler |
| Boots | Cackling Soultreads | Venomous Abyss, The Coiled Altar |
| Ring | Alluring Bubbleband | Nymrissa Wavecaller, Tidebound Grotto |
| Ring | Ritual Binder’s Ring | Season 2 Mythic+, King’s Rest |
| Trinket | Vile Vial of Volatile Venom | Season 2 Mythic+, Altar of Fangs |
| Trinket | Gebbo’s Bottomless Bag | Venomous Abyss, The Lost Explorers |
| Main Hand | Jan’thrazet, the Soul Fang | Venomous Abyss, Ula’tek |
| Off Hand | Aln’hara Lantern | Crafted |
For the Great Vault, take the weapon or the trinket over armor every time, and bonus roll Ula’tek once you are 4-piece for the dagger and the Cowl. Trinket order for Sunfury is Gebbo’s Bottomless Bag, Vile Vial of Volatile Venom, Wavecaller’s Seastone, then Lightspire Core.
- If you are behind, craft Aln’hara Cane with Hunter’s Ritual Stone as the embellishment and Thalassian Missive of the Feverflare or Thalassian Missive of the Aurora as the stat missive.
- If the Ula’tek dagger never drops, keep a two-hander and run two Arcanoweave Lining on cheap slots like cloak, wrist or belt.
- Wavecaller’s Seastone and Lightspire Core carry you until the Vial and the Bag show up.
- The Kith’ix ring Band of the Swarmcaller is a straight item level upgrade for anyone whose rings are lagging.
Frostfire BiS
| Slot | Item | Source |
|---|---|---|
| Head | Venomkeeper’s Horrific Cowl | Venomous Abyss, Ula’tek |
| Neck | Pendant of Malefic Fury | Season 2 Mythic+, Murder Row |
| Shoulders | Ornaments of the Eternal Coil | Venomous Abyss, The Twin Fangs |

| Trinket | Vile Vial of Volatile Venom | Season 2 Mythic+, Altar of Fangs |
| Main Hand | Jan’thrazet, the Soul Fang | Venomous Abyss, Ula’tek |
| Off Hand | Aln’hara Lantern | Crafted |
For the Great Vault, the weapon or trinket beats armor here too, and Ula’tek is the bonus roll target once the set is done. Frostfire has no tree specific items, so the list matches Sunfury, but trinket order leans Gebbo’s Bottomless Bag first because its passive value does not care that Frostfire burst is spread across Meteor cycles.
- If you are behind, craft Aln’hara Cane with Hunter’s Ritual Stone and Thalassian Missive of the Feverflare or Thalassian Missive of the Aurora.
- Without the dagger, run a two-hander with two Arcanoweave Lining on cloak, wrist or belt.
- Wavecaller’s Seastone and Lightspire Core hold the trinket slots until the real ones drop.
- Band of the Swarmcaller from Kith’ix is an item level upgrade for lagging ring slots.
Ascendant Venomstones Per Tree
Ascendant Venomstones Fire Mage players collect work exactly like last patch’s Voidcores with snake branding. Ten Ascendant Venomstones raise the item level of one fully upgraded Season 2 Hero, Myth or maximum quality Tidal Crafted weapon, trinket or necklace past its normal cap, at the Catalyst in Silvermoon.
- Venomstones drop from every Heroic or Mythic raid boss, Mythic+ keys at +10 and above, Tier 11 Bountiful Delves, and Nightmare Prey Hunt Champion gear chests.
- The system unlocks the week of October 20, after Orin finishes researching and you complete Ascending with Venomstones.
- Every single item costs its own 10 stones, so you will spend all season choosing which slot gets fed.
The item must already be fully upgraded, Hero 6/6, Myth 6/6 or max quality Tidal Crafted, before Venomstones touch it. Armor, rings and anything below 6/6 are ineligible, and crests come first.
Sunfury: First 10 Stones
- Spend the first 10 on the weapon, Jan’thrazet, the Soul Fang or a max quality Tidal Crafted Aln’hara Cane, because the weapon carries the most Intellect of any eligible slot.
- Spend the second 10 on Vile Vial of Volatile Venom, because Sunfury stacks Phoenix casts, Sphere damage and the Savor the Moment extension into Combustion, and the on use lands right on top of it.
- Spend the third 10 on Gebbo’s Bottomless Bag.
- Spend the last 10 on Pendant of Malefic Fury, because necks give only secondary stats and no Intellect.
A dagger plus off-hand setup may cost two batches if the off-hand counts as a weapon at the Catalyst, while a two-hander needs one. Check the tooltip before you commit.
Frostfire: First 10 Stones
- Spend the first 10 on the weapon, Jan’thrazet, the Soul Fang or a max quality Tidal Crafted Aln’hara Cane, because nothing else carries as much Intellect.
- Spend the second 10 on Gebbo’s Bottomless Bag, because Frostfire burst is split between Combustion and every 30 second Meteor plus Comet Storm, and a passive trinket rewards that profile.
- Spend the third 10 on Vile Vial of Volatile Venom.
- Spend the last 10 on Pendant of Malefic Fury, since a neck only adds secondary stats.
The same off-hand caveat applies: a dagger and off-hand may double the bill, a two-hander does not. Sim the second and third slot with your own gear, because Frostfire has too few players for anyone else to have done it for you.
Consumables, Enchants, Gems and Embellishments
| Slot | Pick |
|---|---|
| Flask | Flask of the Blood Knights for Haste or Flask of the Magisters for Mastery |
| Combat potion | Light’s Potential |
| Health potion | Concentrated Silvermoon Health Potion |
| Food | Harandar Celebration |
| Weapon oil | Thalassian Phoenix Oil |
| Augment rune | Void-Touched Augment Rune |
| Head | Empowered Rune of Avoidance |
| Shoulders | Amirdrassil’s Grace |
| Chest | Mark of the Worldsoul |
| Legs | Sunfire Silk Spellthread |
| Boots | Lynx’s Dexterity |
| Rings | Eyes of the Eagle |
| Weapon | Acuity of the Ren’dorei |
| Gems | One Powerful Eversong Diamond, the rest Haste and Mastery |
| Embellishment | Hunter’s Ritual Stone on Aln’hara Cane early, then Aln’hara Lantern with the dagger, or two Arcanoweave Lining |
Season 2 gives you four Spark of Tides, so spend them on the weapon craft first. The best races are Tauren and Dwarf, with Troll, Orc, Gnome and Nightborne within about 1%.
- Sunfury leans Flask of the Blood Knights and Haste heavy gems, because Haste feeds Sphere generation and Fire Blast recharge.
- Frostfire leans Flask of the Magisters and Mastery heavy gems, because Molten Chill and Elemental Conduit route more damage through Ignite.
- Enchants, food, oil, rune, potions and embellishments are identical for both trees.
- Omnium Folio picks for both trees are Rune of Unleashed Fire, Rune of Self-Mending, Rune of Lingering, Rune of Burning Haste and Rune of Overload, with Rune of Void-Touched Orbs and Rune of Echoes as accepted alternatives.
Macros, Addons and WeakAuras
WeakAuras do not exist in Midnight, since Blizzard restricted what addons can do in combat. Your proc tracking now lives in the Blizzard Cooldown Manager, ideally reskinned so it stops looking like a tax form.
Combustion Macro
Both trees use it. Swap Berserking for Blood Fury on Orc, and keep slot 14 for the on use trinket.
#showtooltip Combustion
/cast Berserking
/use 14
/cast Combustion
Meteor at Cursor
Both trees use it, but it matters more for Frostfire, where one misplaced Meteor also wastes the Comet Storm and the Empowerment.
#showtooltip

Flamestrike at Cursor
Both trees use it on packs that the auto target circle keeps missing.
#showtooltip Flamestrike

#showtooltip Counterspell

Addons That Matter
- BetterCooldownManager reshapes the Blizzard Cooldown Manager into something readable.
- BigWigs and LittleWigs handle raid and dungeon timers.
- Plater shows nameplates and interruptible casts for Mythic+.
- Details tells you exactly how far behind the Arcane Mage you are.
- A Mythic+ timer addon keeps the Season 2 key honest.
Tracking Per Tree
- Sunfury tracks Spellfire Spheres count, Pyroclasm charges and Fire Blast charges, because entering Combustion with three Spheres is the whole game.
- Frostfire tracks Frostfire Empowerment, Pyroclasm charges and Fire Blast charges, because a wasted Empowerment is a wasted Meteor.
Where Fire Mage Sits in 12.1.5
Fire is a middle of the pack spec that gets carried by mobility, Time Warp and Arcane Intellect. The Fire Mage Mythic+ Season 2 picture is decent damage with great utility and fragile defenses, and raid is fine everywhere except the very top of Mythic.
| Tree | Raid | Mythic+ | PvP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Sunfury | B | B | B+ |
| Frostfire | C | D | C+ |
Sunfury Verdict
Sunfury is viable in every Season 2 difficulty short of world first raiding and title range keys. It brings strong burst, free cleave, two Blazing Barrier charges and Merely a Setback for extra survival. In PvP it is the default tree for most rated Fire players.
Frostfire Verdict
Frostfire works in raid if you accept a visible damage gap, barely exists in Mythic+, and holds a real minority share in PvP. It plays fine, it looks great, and it loses to Sunfury in every log that matters. Pick it for the fantasy, not for the numbers.
Is Fire Worth Maining in 12.1.5?
Yes, if you enjoy burst windows and pressing Fire Blast mid cast for a living. The patch changed nothing, so there is no surprise nerf waiting, only the usual hotfix lottery. If you want the strongest mage, you are reading the wrong spec guide, and that is your problem now.
Is Sunfury or Frostfire better for Fire Mage in 12.1.5?
Sunfury wins raid, Mythic+ and most PvP. Frostfire trails everywhere and survives mainly on aesthetics and stubborn players.
Did patch 12.1.5 change Fire Mage at all?
No. The 12.1.5 notes contain zero Fire changes, so talents, tier set and rotation carry over from 12.1.
Where should Fire spend the first 10 Ascendant Venomstones?
On your weapon once it is fully upgraded, because weapons carry the most Intellect of any eligible slot.
What is the stat priority for Fire in Season 2?
Intellect, then Haste, then Versatility and Mastery nearly tied, with Critical Strike last because Fire already crits constantly.
Which Venomous Abyss bosses drop Fire Mage tier tokens?
Entombed Sentinels hands, Lost Explorers shoulders, Vashnik chest, Sszorak legs, Twin Fangs helm, and Ula’tek drops a flexible Curio.
