Guardian Druid 12.1.5 Guide: Elune’s Chosen vs Druid of the Claw
Short version for people who stop reading after one paragraph. This Guardian Druid 12.1.5 guide starts with good news Blizzard forgot to announce: the 12.1.5 patch notes do not touch Guardian at all, so every talent, the tier bonus and the rotation carry over from 12.1. Elune’s Chosen is the default for Mythic+ and most raid nights, Druid of the Claw is the burst alternative for single target, Haste is the stat, and your first 10 Ascendant Venomstones go into the weapon from the week of October 20.
Patch 12.1.5, The Promise of Tomorrow, lands October 13 in NA and October 14 in EU, inside Midnight Season 2. You get The Unbinding of Kith’ix, a one-boss raid where Lady Liadrin holds your hand, the nine-chamber Labyrinth of Kindo’jan with Valeera, hourly Aqir Invasions in Eversong and Zul’Aman, Keystone Myth at 3600 rating, and Venomstones that push a maxed weapon, trinket or neck past its cap. The October 6 tuning pass only buffed the Focused Assault PvP talents, Alpha Challenge included. Your bear is exactly as strong as it was, which is to say the problem is still you.
Hero Talent Trees: Which Bear You Are
Guardian has two Hero trees. Pick before you read the rest, because every section below is split by tree and you only need your half.
| Tree | What it does | Raid | Mythic+ | PvP |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Elune’s Chosen | Turns Lunar Beam into a real cooldown, makes Thrash Arcane and fires Fury of Elune from Moonfire | Default, sustained damage | Default, 94 to 98 percent of high keys | Slightly better sample |
| Druid of the Claw | Auto attacks turn Maul and Raze into Ravage, a cleave that applies a bleed | Burst single target | Even in sims, almost nobody plays it | Niche |
The Elune’s Chosen Guardian 12.1.5 build is the laser bear. Boundless Moonlight, Penumbral Swell and The Eternal Moon inflate Lunar Beam, Lunation trims its cooldown by a flat 20 seconds since the 12.1 rework, Lunar Calling converts Thrash to Arcane, Star Cascade adds free Starsurge casts, and The Light of Elune drops Fury of Elune for damage and Rage. It generates more Rage than Druid of the Claw and gets a second defensive window every time the beam comes up.
The Druid of the Claw Guardian 12.1.5 version is the physical one. Auto attacks proc Ravage, which hits a cone and applies Dreadful Wound, then Aggravate Wounds extends it. Limb From Limb raised the baseline proc rate in Midnight while Claw Rampage was nerfed, so the tree no longer lives and dies inside Incarnation. Optional catweaving exists through Wildpower Surge, and Method still recommends ignoring it.
Both trees take the same Apex, Wild Guardian. Spending Rage has a 10 percent chance to wake a spirit for 8 seconds that attacks when you press Thrash or Mangle. Ranks 2 and 3 add 3 then 6 percent Mastery, 20 then 40 percent extra Nature damage on Mangle, Maul, Raze and Ravage, reset Mangle and Thrash when a spirit wakes, and make each spirit attack generate 8 Rage. Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc also guarantees a spirit from your next spender.
Talent Builds Per Tree
The Guardian Druid talents 12.1.5 loadouts below are 12.1 builds, because nothing changed. Import the string, then make the swaps listed for your fight or key.
Elune’s Chosen: Raid Build
CgGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAgZmhFzYMzmZZGMLLDMbMGNRzMzyMzMzYMjZAAAAAAzYZGwy2MDGz2AYKAAAwGmxAWMDGwiltBYmBwA
This is Method’s offensive raid loadout with two defensive picks. It runs Red Moon instead of Moonfire, Killing Blow, Brambles, Reinforced Fur and Harnessed Rage. Hero choices are locked as The Light of Elune and Lunation, with Moondust over Elune’s Grace by default.
- Swap Brambles into Natural Resilience and Killing Blow into Ursoc’s Guidance when Kith’ix or a Venomous Abyss boss is killing you instead of the reverse.
- Swap Reinforced Fur into Bristling Fur when the healers are bored and you want more damage.
- Swap Red Moon into Twin Moonfire on any fight with two or more targets most of the time.
- Move the flex class points between Typhoon, Mass Entanglement and Ursol’s Vortex per boss, and drop Natural Recovery if you need two of them.
Elune’s Chosen: Mythic+ Build
CgGAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAgZmxsYmZMziZxMmZZZgZzwoJamZWmZmZmlxMMAAAAAgZsZALbzMYMLDgpAAAAbYmHAYxMYALWAYmBwA
The Guardian Druid Mythic+ build Season 2 players actually run is this one. It takes Twin Moonfire with Galactic Guardian for spread damage and Rage, skips the Maul nodes entirely, and leans on Natural Resilience and Reinforced Fur. Dream Guide is usually preferred over pressing Dream of Cenarius procs in keys.
- Swap Natural Resilience or Reinforced Fur into Brambles for more damage once the key stops threatening your life.
- Put one point into Fury of Nature to reach Elune’s Favored on keys where the healer needs help.
- Move Matted Fur, Fluid Form or Improved Stampeding Roar into Innervate or a path to Moonkin Form when the route needs it.
- Take Moonkin Form for Flap skips and the AoE version of Heart of the Wild on routes with huge pulls.
- Take Forestwalk on pulls where you take constant damage and have capstone points to spare.
Elune’s Chosen: PvP Build
Start from the Mythic+ string, because it already carries the self-healing and multi-target tools. Elune’s Chosen holds the larger share of the small rated Guardian sample, since Lunar Beam with Boundless Moonlight leech and Elune’s Favored keep you alive through a go without a healer looking at you. Take Cyclone, Typhoon, Ursol’s Vortex and Incapacitating Roar in the class tree.
- Run Overrun, Demoralizing Roar and Alpha Challenge as the default PvP talent trio for Solo Shuffle and arena.
- Alpha Challenge now stacks Focused Assault 6 times for 10 seconds on a 15 second cooldown at 15 yards after the October 6 buff, so it finally deserves the slot.
- Replace Alpha Challenge with Emerald Slumber only when a teammate can cover the 8 second sleep.
- Replace one pick with Malorne’s Swiftness for flag carrying in battlegrounds and Blitz.
- Remember that Infected Wounds slows only 30 percent in PvP since 12.1, so roots and Typhoon do the kiting.
Druid of the Claw: Raid Build
No verified Druid of the Claw import string survived our check, so build it by hand in the 12.1 tree. Keep the Apex at full rank, take Red Moon, Harnessed Rage, Killing Blow and Brambles like the Elune’s Chosen raid build, and pick up the Maul nodes Elune’s Chosen ignores. Hero choices are Strike for the Heart, Ruthless Aggression for more Ravage procs on long single-target fights, and Empowered Shapeshifting if you refuse to catweave.
- Swap Empowered Shapeshifting into Wildpower Surge only if you also take Fluid Form and Persistence, because weaving without them wastes globals and armor.
- Swap Persistence back into Front of the Pack the moment you stop weaving.
- Swap Ruthless Aggression into Killing Strikes on Kith’ix if the opener matters more than sustained procs.
- Take Gory Fur only in a pure damage build, because its free spenders proc rarely.
- Swap Red Moon into Twin Moonfire on adds, and Brambles into Natural Resilience on progression.
Druid of the Claw: Mythic+ Build
Archon lists Killing Strikes, Empowered Shapeshifting and Strike for the Heart on 100 percent of high-key Druid of the Claw logs. Killing Strikes guarantees Ravage on pull, which suits keys where you stop between packs. Use the same spec tree as the Elune’s Chosen Mythic+ build, with Twin Moonfire, Natural Resilience and Dream Guide, but take the Maul nodes and Front of the Pack for the movement speed.
- Swap Killing Strikes into Ruthless Aggression for chain pulls where combat never drops.
- Swap Natural Resilience into Brambles once the key is comfortable.
- Keep Fluid Form only if you use Heart of the Wild in Cat Form on bosses.
Druid of the Claw: PvP Build
Druid of the Claw in rated PvP is a curiosity, so treat it as a pressure build for players who want Ravage burst on a called target. Take Killing Strikes for guaranteed Ravage at the start of each go, Strike for the Heart, and Empowered Shapeshifting. Class tree picks match Elune’s Chosen, with Cyclone, Typhoon, Ursol’s Vortex and Incapacitating Roar.
- Run Overrun, Demoralizing Roar and Alpha Challenge as the default trio, the same as Elune’s Chosen.
- Line Alpha Challenge up with your teammate’s burst and a fresh Ravage so the damage amp hits something real.
- Replace Alpha Challenge with Emerald Slumber only when the enemy healer is already handled.
- Use Malorne’s Swiftness instead of Demoralizing Roar when you are the flag carrier.
Rotation and Priority Per Tree
The Guardian Druid rotation 12.1.5 asks two things: keep Mangle and Thrash on cooldown, and never sit at full Rage. Ironfur stacks do not refresh, each cast adds an independent stack, so you cannot clip it. You can only forget it.
Elune’s Chosen Rotation
Opener for Kith’ix and any raid boss, from Method:
- Enter Bear Form before the pull and press Barkskin.
- Place Lunar Beam under the boss and drink Potion of Recklessness.
- Press Rake to enter Cat Form and use Heart of the Wild for the single-target hit.
- Return to bear, press Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc and activate Wild Guardian.
- Cast Thrash, then Red Moon, then Mangle.
- Add Ironfur, then Mangle and Thrash again, and fall into the priority.
Single target priority:
- Keep Red Moon rolling in the raid build, or Moonfire in the Mythic+ build.
- Keep 3 stacks of Thrash, or more with Flashing Claws.
- Cast Lunar Beam on cooldown.
- Cast Mangle, which jumps above Thrash during Red Moon because it extends the DoT and grants Rage.
- Cast Thrash.
- Spend excess Rage on Maul once Ironfur covers the next hit.
- Cast Moonfire as filler instead of Swipe, but never above Mangle, since Moonfire no longer cuts Lunar Beam cooldown in 12.1.
AoE priority:
- Tag the pack with Moonfire so Twin Moonfire and Galactic Guardian spread it and feed Rage.
- Apply Thrash as the mobs arrive.
- Drop Lunar Beam where the pack will stand, because its damage, leech and healing all depend on that.
- Cast Mangle on cooldown.
- Spend Rage on Raze after Ironfur is handled.
- Use Moonfire as filler.
Cooldown windows: stack Lunar Beam, Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc and the 1.5 minute on-use of Voracious Heart of Ula’tek inside Red Moon, and pool both Mangle charges from Harnessed Rage before the window opens. On Kith’ix, Lady Liadrin buffs the raid at 25 percent health, so if a cooldown would come back within 30 seconds of that phase, hold it. In keys, Lunar Beam goes on every big pack, not on the boss you could have tanked with Ironfur alone.
- Never cap Rage, because unspent Rage is lost Ursoc’s Guidance cooldown reduction and lost After the Wildfire healing.
- Never overlap Barkskin and Survival Instincts, since they stack multiplicatively and leave the next hit uncovered.
- Never let Mangle sit at 2 charges.
- Never cast Regrowth without a Dream of Cenarius proc, because it pulls you out of Bear Form.
- Never place Lunar Beam where the boss is about to leave.
What Elune’s Chosen changes: Lunar Beam becomes a rotational press instead of an emergency button, Thrash turns Arcane through Lunar Calling, and Moonfire replaces Swipe as filler. You spend less on Maul and more on staying alive inside a beam.
Druid of the Claw Rotation
Opener for Kith’ix and any raid boss:
- Enter Bear Form before the pull and press Barkskin.
- Place Lunar Beam and drink Potion of Recklessness.
- Press Rake to enter Cat Form and use Heart of the Wild for the single-target hit.
- Return to bear, press Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc and activate Wild Guardian, so your next spender wakes a spirit.
- Cast Thrash, then Red Moon, then Mangle.
- Add Ironfur, spend the first Ravage proc above 60 Rage, then continue with Mangle and Thrash.
Single target priority:
- Keep Red Moon rolling in the raid build, or Moonfire in the Mythic+ build.
- Keep 3 stacks of Thrash, or more with Flashing Claws.
- Cast Ravage whenever it is lit and you sit above 60 Rage.
- Cast Thrash, then Mangle, with Mangle first during Red Moon.
- Cast the Galactic Guardian Moonfire proc.
- Spend on Maul or Ravage below 60 Rage only when Ironfur is not needed.
- Use Swipe as filler.
AoE priority:
- Tag spread mobs with Moonfire to start Twin Moonfire in the Mythic+ build.
- Apply Thrash on arrival.
- Aim Ravage into the pack so Dreadful Wound hits everything, and let Aggravate Wounds extend it.
- Cast Mangle on cooldown.
- Spend leftover Rage on Raze after Ironfur.
- Use Swipe as filler.
Cooldown windows: same 2 minute stack as Elune’s Chosen, with Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc, Heart of the Wild and Voracious Heart of Ula’tek together, plus the guaranteed spirit from the Incarnation spender. On Kith’ix, save the last window for the Liadrin buff at 25 percent if the timer allows. Fount of Strength makes Frenzied Regeneration raise your maximum health, so press it slightly before the hit, not after.
- Never cap Rage, because it costs Ursoc’s Guidance cooldown reduction and Ravage value.
- Never overlap Barkskin and Survival Instincts.
- Never let Mangle sit at 2 charges.
- Never shift to Cat Form above 25 Rage when catweaving, since Rage resets to 25 when you return.
- Never chase the 80 Rage Gore bonus from Harnessed Rage at the cost of globals.
Catweaving, if you insist: at 6 stacks of Feline Potential from Mangle, press Rake to shift, cast the empowered 5 combo point Rip or a Ferocious Bite if Rip has more than 8 seconds, then Mangle to return. Shred and Rake replace Swipe and Moonfire only when cat form is safe. The 12.1 nerf cut Wildpower Surge to a 50 percent bonus, so the payoff is small and the deaths are large.
What Druid of the Claw changes: Maul becomes Ravage on procs, physical bleeds replace Arcane, Swipe stays as filler, and your best damage is spending Rage at the right moment rather than standing in a beam.
Stat Priority Per Tree
Item level beats secondary stats for every tank, because Agility, Armor and Stamina scale with it. The Guardian Druid stat priority Midnight data agrees on Haste first, then splits by tree.
Elune’s Chosen Stats
- Item level and Agility come first.
- Haste lowers the cooldown of Mangle, Thrash and Frenzied Regeneration and the global cooldown.
- Versatility and Critical Strike are close, with Versatility adding damage reduction and Crit adding dodge through Lightning Reflexes.
- Mastery is last, partly because the Apex already hands you 6 percent.
There is no hard cap and no Haste breakpoint. The usual diminishing returns on secondary rating start around 30 percent from rating, and top Elune’s Chosen keys run Haste and Crit near that line.
Druid of the Claw Stats
- Item level and Agility come first.
- Haste drives the same Mangle, Thrash and Frenzied Regeneration cooldowns.
- Critical Strike follows, feeding physical Ravage hits and Lightning Reflexes dodge.
- Mastery comes next, boosting health, healing received and attack power on top of the Apex 6 percent.
- Versatility is last for this tree in current high-key logs.
Same rules apply: no hard cap, rating diminishing returns past roughly 30 percent, and a higher item level piece beats a better stat split almost every time outside jewelry and trinkets.
Tier 36 Set: Bark of the Enigmatic Dreamwatcher
The Guardian Druid tier set Midnight Season 2 gives you is passive damage you will never think about, which is the best kind for a tank.
- The 2-piece gives Thrash a 20 percent chance to make your next Mangle deal 100 percent more damage.
- The 4-piece makes Thrash summon 3 thorns that deal Nature damage to your target and up to 5 nearby enemies, and each cast extends Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc by 0.5 seconds, up to 5 seconds.
| Slot | Boss | Leather token |
|---|---|---|
| Head | The Twin Fangs | Venomcured Effigy |
| Shoulders | The Lost Explorers | Venomcured Remnant |
| Chest | Vashnik the Malignant | Venomcured Icon |
| Hands | Entombed Sentinels | Venomcured Idol |
| Legs | Sszorak | Venomcured Relic |
| Any slot | Ula’tek | Slumbering Coil Curio |
Kith’ix drops no tokens. Turn tokens and the Curio in to Kirana at the Catalyst in Silvermoon City. Since 12.1 the Catalyst keeps stats and cantrip effects, which changes the fastest route:
- Catalyze Gaze of the Coiled Watcher from Ula’tek into the tier helm and keep its Haste cantrip.
- Catalyze the Kith’ix leather legs, Leggings of Palpable Terror, which keep their Haste and Crit cantrip as tier.
- Fill shoulders, chest or hands from Entombed Sentinels, The Lost Explorers or Vashnik on Heroic or Mythic.
- Use the Ula’tek Curio on whichever slot is still missing.
- Catalyze Great Vault or Mythic+ leather in the remaining tier slot, such as Somber Spaulders or Gauntlets of Fevered Defense.
How Elune’s Chosen Uses the Tier Set
Elune’s Chosen presses Thrash on cooldown as a core part of its loop, so the 2-piece Mangle buffs and the 4-piece thorns fire constantly. Maxroll and Method both note that the Apex rework plus this set reinforce Elune’s Chosen more than Druid of the Claw. The Incarnation extension is a bonus on top. Value: 4-piece is mandatory, and breaking it for a non-set piece only makes sense with a sim showing a Myth 9/6 cantrip outweighs it.
How Druid of the Claw Uses the Tier Set
Druid of the Claw also casts Thrash every cooldown, so it gets the same 2-piece Mangle boosts and the same 4-piece thorns. The difference is where the payoff lands: its damage spikes inside Incarnation: Guardian of Ursoc, and those 5 extra seconds stretch the Ravage burst window. Value: still mandatory, slightly less efficient than on Elune’s Chosen because the tree spends more globals on Ravage than on Thrash.
BiS Gear Per Tree
Every Guardian Druid BiS 12.1.5 list is still a Season 2 list, with Kith’ix loot bolted on. Kith’ix drops Veteran 3/6 285 in LFR, Champion 3/6 298 on Normal, Hero 3/6 311 on Heroic and Myth 3/6 on Mythic after raid testing cut it from 344. Myth 6/6 caps at 334, and the last two Mythic Venomous Abyss bosses drop 344.
Elune’s Chosen BiS

Great Vault: Heroic raid gives Myth 1/6 at 318, Mythic raid gives Myth 6/6 at 334, a +10 key gives Myth 1/6 at 318, and Tier 8 Delves stop at Hero 1/6 at 305. Spend vault picks and Nebulous Voidcore bonus rolls on the weapon, the Ula’tek trinket and Keeper’s Seething Core, since rolls drop at vault item level. From October 6, Orin sells one extra Voidcore a week for gold, Voidlight Marl or Veteran Mistcrests. Crafted wrist and boots carry the two Arcanoweave Lining embellishments, and max-quality Tidal crafts qualify for Venomstones later.
Behind on gear: Restless Spirit Shackles from Nek’zali and Apex Brute’s Claw Ring from Sszorak fill wrist and ring, Gebbo’s Bottomless Bag is a fine stat trinket, Heroic Kith’ix at 311 hands out cantrip legs and the tank trinket Lightbearer’s Shield Fragment, and the Labyrinth of Kindo’jan pays Mythic gear to anyone who survives Tier 11 alone.

Great Vault: Heroic raid gives Myth 1/6 at 318, Mythic raid gives Myth 6/6 at 334, a +10 key gives Myth 1/6 at 318, and Tier 8 Delves stop at Hero 1/6 at 305. Spend vault picks and Voidcore rolls on the weapon and Voracious Heart of Ula’tek first, because this tree’s burst lives in the 2 minute window that trinket joins. The extra weekly Voidcore from Orin starts October 6. Crafted wrist and boots carry both Arcanoweave Lining embellishments, and max-quality Tidal crafts qualify for Venomstones.
Behind on gear: Restless Spirit Shackles and Apex Brute’s Claw Ring fill the gaps, Resonant Bellowstone is the best passive Crit stick from keys, Heroic Kith’ix at 311 offers cantrip legs and the Crit trinket on a DPS loot spec, and Tier 11 in the Labyrinth of Kindo’jan pays Mythic gear. Skip Manaheart’s Binding Flame, Permafrost Essence and Lightspire Core, which are tuned like apologies.
Ascendant Venomstones Per Tree
The Guardian Druid Ascendant Venomstones order is simple because Agility on a two-hander outweighs everything. Stones drop from every Heroic or Mythic raid boss including Kith’ix, Mythic+ at +10 and above, Tier 11 Bountiful Delves and Nightmare Prey Hunt Champion chests. Ten stones upgrade one fully upgraded Season 2 Hero 6/6, Myth 6/6 or max-quality Tidal crafted weapon, trinket or neck at the Catalyst in Silvermoon.
Venomstones do not drop on October 13. You take Ancient Depths, Ancient Venom from Orin Straylight that week, he researches for seven days, and Ascending with Venomstones unlocks drops the week of October 20, together with the crest cap lift. An upgraded item turns Ascendant and can never be upgraded again, and PTR data points to a Myth 8/6 equivalent ceiling, so a 344 Mythic Ula’tek item likely gains nothing. Spend stones only on a Hero or Myth 6/6 piece you will keep for the rest of Season 2.
Elune’s Chosen: First 10 Stones and After
- Put the first 10 stones into the weapon, Heroic Abyssal Broodfiend’s Bardiche or a 6/6 Twin-Strike Polearm, because the weapon has the largest Agility budget.
- Put the next 10 into Voracious Heart of Ula’tek for raid, since its on-use joins every Lunar Beam and Incarnation window.
- Put the next 10 into Keeper’s Seething Core for keys, because its stacking Haste is this tree’s best stat.
- Put the last 10 into the neck, which only carries secondary stats and Stamina.
Druid of the Claw: First 10 Stones and After
- Put the first 10 stones into the weapon, Heroic Abyssal Broodfiend’s Bardiche or a 6/6 Twin-Strike Polearm, because the weapon has the largest Agility budget.
- Put the next 10 into Voracious Heart of Ula’tek, since this tree front-loads damage into the Incarnation window the trinket joins.
- Put the next 10 into Zul’jin’s Guillotine Technique or Twisted Horror’s Tendril, the Crit trinket upgraded to 6/6 first.
- Put the last 10 into the neck, which only carries secondary stats and Stamina.

Darkmoon Sigil: Hunt was an early-season crutch for crafted weapons and is dead weight by 12.1.5. Omnium Folio rows go Rune of Unleashed Fire, Rune of Self-Mending, Rune of Lingering, Rune of Burning Haste and Rune of Overload, with row 4 simmed per character. Night Elf wins on Shadowmeld skips, and no other race gives Guardian anything worth a race change.
Macros, Addons and Why There Are No WeakAuras
WeakAuras has no Midnight version. Combat state is locked away from addons, so your tracking lives in Blizzard’s Cooldown Manager plus helpers. Anyone selling you a Guardian WeakAura pack in 12.1.5 is selling you a screenshot.

The Moonfire macro tags packs for Moonfire and Twin Moonfire, the Skull Bash focus macro handles kicks, Rebirth and Regrowth mouseovers save healers from themselves, Growl handles raid swaps, and Ursol’s Vortex on cursor keeps adds in your Thrash. Copy the same mouseover pattern for Remove Corruption and Innervate.
- Unhalted Unit Frames covers player and target health.
- BetterCooldownManager extends the Cooldown Manager with grouping and resource bars.
- Platynator or Plater handles nameplates.
- Grid2 handles party and raid frames.
- BigWigs or Deadly Boss Mods adds what encounter alerts Blizzard still allows.
Elune’s Chosen only: track Lunar Beam cooldown, Red Moon duration and Lunar Wrath stacks in the Cooldown Manager, because those three decide every burst window.
Druid of the Claw only: track the Ravage proc, Dreadful Wound uptime and, if weaving, Feline Potential stacks. No macro is needed for catweaving, since Fluid Form shifts you on the cast.
Where Guardian Sits in 12.1.5
Current Wowhead and Icy Veins lists keep Guardian in A tier for both raid and keys behind Blood, and Murlok shows a Guardian at the top of tank Mythic+ ratings. Grades below are ours, per tree.
| Tree | Raid | Mythic+ | PvP |
|---|---|---|---|
| Elune’s Chosen | A, sustained damage and better defensive tools | A+, near total adoption at the top | C+, survives, rarely kills |
| Druid of the Claw | A, slightly higher burst on Kith’ix style single target | B+, even in sims, ignored in practice | C, burst without the self-heal |
