Holy Paladin 12.1.5 Guide: Talents, BiS, Tier Set, Stats

Short version for people who stop reading after one paragraph: Herald of the Sun heals the raid, Lightsmith runs high keys and arenas, and patch 12.1.5 does not touch a single Paladin tooltip. Stats go Intellect, then Mastery, then Haste and Critical Strike, with Versatility last. Your Tier 36 4-piece turns Holy Light into an Infusion of Light vending machine that costs 50% more mana, and your first 10 Ascendant Venomstones go into Soulcoiler Ritual Vessel or your weapon, depending on the tree.

This holy paladin 12.1.5 guide is written for The Promise of Tomorrow, live October 13, 2026, inside Midnight Season 2. New content means a one-boss raid where Kith’ix waits under The Venomous Abyss, a nine-chamber Labyrinth of Kindo’jan, hourly Aqir Invasions in Eversong and Zul’Aman, and a fresh grind for upgrade stones. Your job stays the same: press Holy Shock, spend Holy Power, and explain to the raid leader that the wipe was the Hunter’s fault.

What 12.1.5 Changes for Holy Paladin

Nothing in the class. The September 15 dev notes, the September 29 dev notes and the official 12.1.5 patch notes contain zero Paladin changes, so every 12.1 number carries over. That means all healing stays up 19%, damage up 20%, Holy Shock healing up 65%, Eternal Flame and Word of Glory up 20.75%, Pillars of Light up 50%, and Ringing of the Heavens still casts Divine Toll at 200% effectiveness.

What changes is the world around you. The holy paladin midnight 12.1.5 experience is the same spec dropped into new chores with new rewards, rolled out on a schedule designed to keep you logging in every Tuesday.

Hero Talent Trees: Herald of the Sun vs Lightsmith

Herald of the Sun is the healing tree. It replaces Word of Glory with Eternal Flame, spawns Dawnlight heal over time effects from Divine Toll and Holy Prism, and Sun’s Avatar links you to every active Dawnlight with healing beams. It rewards keeping two buttons on cooldown and punishes you for forgetting them.

Lightsmith is the Judgment tree. Holy Armaments hands out Holy Bulwark for an ally and Sacred Weapon for you, Hammer and Anvil turns Judgment crits into healing shockwaves, and Laying Down Arms feeds extra Infusion of Light procs. You trade Divine Toll for more damage, more self healing and more defensive tools.

Talents: Herald of the Sun

The holy paladin talents 12.1.5 builds below come straight from 12.1, since nothing moved. The apex node is Beacon of the Savior, a self-placing beacon that hops to whoever is lowest, and every Herald build takes all three ranks.

Herald raid build

Virtue import string: CEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALAwMAAw2MzMjZMzYxYmZYZwMLmpJGGzMDjZLDADAbgNWmxMLz2Mzs1AAAAsAGYzwYGDmBAwMDzYMaA

Faith import string: CEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALAwMAAwyMzMjZ2mZmNYMsM2mZWMTTMMmZGGzWGAGA2AbsMjZWmtZmZrBAAAYBMwmhxMGYAAMzwMGjGA

Herald Mythic+ build

  • Beacon of Virtue stays, because dungeon damage arrives in bursts and Virtue answers bursts.
  • Pillars of Light stays with Virtue, and Rising Sunlight replaces it only if you run Faith.
  • Liberation takes the damage node over Crusader’s Might, since the latter adds nothing to healing.
  • Shield of the Righteous talents earn their points because you will dump spare Holy Power into it on trash.

Mythic+ import string: CEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAALAwMAADWGzMzMjZmZBGDLjNzsY0EDjZmhxslBgBgNwGLzMzsMbzMzWDAAAwCLMzwmHAmxgZAAMzwMGjGA

Herald PvP build

  • Herald belongs in Rated Battlegrounds, where Dawnlight spread across a 10 player blob does more than in a 3v3.
  • Divine Vision is taken by 7 of the top 8 battleground Paladins for the longer aura range and shorter Aura Mastery cooldown.
  • Spreading the Word and Searing Glare fill the other two slots in most top battleground builds.
  • Dawnlight slows by only 30% in PvP since 12.1, so stop treating it as a peel tool.
  • All PvP healing is 15% lower since 12.1, which makes Beacon of Faith the safer mana choice in long games.

Herald swaps

  • Swap Virtue for Faith on fights with constant rot damage and no burst windows.
  • Swap Glistening Radiance and Saved by the Light for Divine Favor and Protection of Tyr when a boss has two or three lethal raid hits.
  • Swap Liberation back into healing nodes in keys above your comfort level.

Talents: Lightsmith

Lightsmith keeps the same apex, Beacon of the Savior at three ranks, and builds the rest around Judgment. The tree loses Divine Toll for Holy Armaments, so expect less burst and more steady output.

Lightsmith raid build

  • Avenging Crusader replaces Avenging Wrath and brings back Crusader Strike for the duration.
  • Blessing of the Forge is the wings upgrade, weaker than Sun’s Avatar but cheaper to play.
  • Holy Prism stays on cooldown, and Beacon of Virtue remains the beacon of choice.
  • Glistening Radiance and Saved by the Light swap into Divine Favor and Protection of Tyr exactly as they would on any healer build.
  • Expect a noticeable healing loss against Herald and pick this only when the fight wants melee uptime.

Lightsmith Mythic+ build

  • Beacon of Virtue with Pillars of Light remains the core burst package.
  • Tirion’s Devotion replaces Liberation, because Lightsmith needs mana more than another damage node.
  • Solidarity lets your Holy Bulwark and Sacred Weapon buff yourself as well as the target.
  • Hammer and Anvil is mandatory, since Judgment crits are now part of your healing.
  • Avenging Wrath stays in keys, as Crusader windows leave you in melee during the exact pulls that kill healers.

The holy paladin mythic+ 12.1.5 meta at the top end is Lightsmith by a wide margin, and the reason is boring: more damage, more self healing, and fewer deaths when the tank pulls two packs into a third.

Lightsmith PvP build

  • Lightsmith is the arena default because Holy Bulwark is a free absorb you can drop on a target that is about to get trained.
  • Divine Vision appears in 94% of top 3v3 builds.
  • Blessing of Spellwarding shows up in 66% of top builds as the caster answer to Blessing of Protection.
  • Spreading the Word fills the last slot in 54% of top builds.
  • Versatility outranks everything else on PvP gear, because a dead healer heals nothing.

The holy paladin pvp 12.1.5 reality is a spec without an interrupt and without Repentance since Midnight launched, so your control is Hammer of Justice and Blinding Light, and you have to walk into melee to use either.

Lightsmith swaps

  • Swap Avenging Wrath for Avenging Crusader in raid only on encounters with long melee uptime and spread damage.
  • Swap Tirion’s Devotion for Liberation on farm keys where mana never runs out.
  • Swap to Lightsmith entirely for the Labyrinth and Delves, where its self healing keeps you and Valeera alive.

Rotation: Herald of the Sun

Herald lives and dies by Dawnlight uptime. Divine Toll and Holy Prism create Dawnlights, Sun’s Avatar links you to them, and every second either button sits ready is healing you threw away.

Opener

  1. Cast Judgment on the pull for Holy Power.
  2. Cast Holy Shock on the tank or the first target taking damage.
  3. Cast Divine Toll to spawn Dawnlight and fill Holy Power.
  4. Cast Holy Prism for another Dawnlight.
  5. Spend Holy Power on Eternal Flame.
  6. Hold Avenging Wrath for the first real damage event unless your raid lead assigned it.

Single target and AoE

  • Never sit at 5 Holy Power, because overcapping is the only true sin in this spec.
  • Divine Toll and Holy Prism go on cooldown unless a big hit lands within a few seconds.
  • Infusion of Light goes into Flash of Light when someone needs healing and into Judgment when nobody does.
  • Holy Shock is cast every time it is ready.
  • Holy Power goes into Eternal Flame first, Word of Glory second, and Light of Dawn only when Eternal Flame would overheal.
  • Beacon of Virtue is cast right as damage lands, followed by Holy Shock, Flash of Light, Eternal Flame and Holy Light into it.
  • Holy Light is cast only when you can afford it, because the 4-piece makes it expensive.

Cooldown windows and what never to clip

  • Avenging Wrath lasts 30 seconds on a 2 minute cooldown and should overlap with Divine Toll and Beacon of Virtue.
  • Aura Mastery on Devotion Aura goes on the raid leader’s call, not on your panic.
  • Never cast Light of Dawn or Judgment inside a Virtue window, since both waste the transfer.
  • Never let Divine Toll and Holy Prism sit off cooldown, since that is Dawnlight you will never get back.
  • In Mythic+, Judgment goes on cooldown on trash because it triggers Consecration, and spare Holy Power goes into Shield of the Righteous for damage and mana.

Rotation: Lightsmith

Lightsmith replaces the Dawnlight loop with an Armaments loop and a Judgment loop. You press Judgment far more, you lose Divine Toll entirely, and your burst becomes Holy Armaments plus Beacon of Virtue.

Opener

  1. Cast Holy Armaments for Sacred Weapon on yourself.
  2. Cast Judgment on the pull for Holy Power and a chance at a Hammer and Anvil shockwave.
  3. Cast Holy Shock on the first injured target.
  4. Cast the next Holy Armaments charge for Holy Bulwark on a squishy ally.
  5. Cast Holy Prism and spend Holy Power on Word of Glory.

Single target and AoE

  • Never sit at 5 Holy Power.
  • Holy Armaments goes on cooldown, with Holy Bulwark on squishies and Sacred Weapon on yourself.
  • Holy Prism goes on cooldown.
  • Beacon of Virtue is cast as damage lands and filled with Holy Shock, Flash of Light, Word of Glory and Holy Light.
  • Infusion of Light goes into Flash of Light when healing is needed and into Judgment when it is not.
  • Holy Shock is cast on every charge.
  • Judgment is cast far more often than on Herald, because Hammer and Anvil and the 4-piece both feed on it.
  • Holy Power goes into Word of Glory, then Light of Dawn when single target would overheal.

Cooldown windows and what never to clip

  • Avenging Wrath is the default wings and should line up with Holy Armaments and Beacon of Virtue.
  • In an Avenging Crusader build, Judgment and Crusader Strike go on cooldown, Holy Power goes into Light of Dawn, and Holy Shock becomes filler.
  • Never let a Holy Armaments charge cap, since that is a free absorb or a free buff deleted.
  • Never spend Holy Power on Shield of the Righteous during a damage spike in keys, since sitting on Holy Power is your emergency button.

Stat Priority Per Tree

The holy paladin stat priority 12.1.5 is close across all secondaries, so item level beats stat chasing every single time. Haste has one catch: too much of it burns your mana before the boss dies.

Tree and contentPriority
Herald raidIntellect > Mastery > Haste > Critical Strike > Versatility
Herald Mythic+Intellect > Haste > Versatility > Critical Strike > Mastery
Herald PvPIntellect > Versatility > Mastery > Haste > Critical Strike
Lightsmith raidIntellect > Mastery > Critical Strike > Haste > Versatility
Lightsmith Mythic+Intellect > Critical Strike > Haste > Versatility > Mastery
Lightsmith PvPIntellect > Versatility > Mastery > Critical Strike > Haste

Herald values Critical Strike less than Lightsmith because it has nothing that scales off crits, while Lightsmith gets Hammer and Anvil shockwaves from every critical Judgment. Mastery drops in Mythic+ for both trees because it adds no damage and you heal from range anyway.

StatDiminishing returns start at
Critical Strike1,380 rating
Haste1,320 rating
Mastery1,380 rating
Versatility1,620 rating

Each breakpoint cuts the value of further rating by 10%. Neither tree has a hard cap, so you only stop stacking a stat once it passes these numbers by a wide margin.

Tier 36: Radiance of the Consecrated Flame

The holy paladin tier set 12.1.5 carries over unchanged from 12.1. The Radiance of the Consecrated Flame bonuses are short and slightly cruel.

BonusEffect
2-pieceInfusion of Light increases Flash of Light healing by an additional 100% and the Greater Judgment absorb by an additional 100%
4-pieceJudgment has a 20% chance to grant Infusion of Light, and Holy Light grants it 100% of the time but costs 50% more mana

How Herald of the Sun uses it

Herald gets solid value from the 2-piece, since every Infusion proc becomes a double strength Flash of Light. The 4-piece mostly matters through Holy Light into Beacon of Virtue, which now refunds itself as a guaranteed proc. We rate the set as a meaningful but not mandatory throughput gain for Herald, and the extra Holy Light cost means you should not chase it while your mana is already tight.

How Lightsmith uses it

Lightsmith gets more from the 4-piece than Herald does, because it presses Judgment far more often and every 20% proc turns into a buffed Flash of Light or another Judgment. Each Judgment is also a Hammer and Anvil roll, so the two effects feed each other. We rate the set as close to mandatory for Lightsmith, which is why its 4-piece should come before any non-tier upgrade.

The 4-piece raises Holy Light’s mana cost by 50%. Spam it like you did in 12.0 and you will be drinking by the second phase, so cast Holy Light into Beacon of Virtue or when you have nothing better to do, never as a filler.

  4. Earn the Serpent Scion achievement for an extra charge through 2,000 Mythic+ rating, 1,600 PvP rating or a Heroic Ula’tek kill.
  5. Catalyze the plate helm from Kith’ix if you want tier and its cantrip effect in one slot, since catalyzed gear keeps both.
  6. Finish 4-piece to unlock Catalyst Unbound, which makes charges drop from regular endgame content for the rest of the season.

BiS Gear Per Tree

The holy paladin bis 12.1.5 list barely moves from 12.1, because Kith’ix adds a handful of pieces and the Labyrinth hands out Mythic gear without a fixed loot table. Tier slots below are the base items you catalyze.

Herald wants the on-use Soulcoiler Ritual Vessel lined up with Avenging Wrath, and a stat stick in the second slot. If you are behind, Wavecaller’s Seastone, Stormbound Emblem of Dazar and Lightspire Core all hold the slot without embarrassment. Your first crafted Spark goes on a weapon with Darkmoon Sigil: Hunt until the Hexblade drops, and the rest go on Arcanoweave Lining in bracers and cloak.

Lightsmith values Critical Strike, so the Mastery and Critical Strike Phoenixblade from Kith’ix, which turns your healing into Radiant damage, is our pick for keys. Sigil of the Impending Eclipse grants Haste that grows with your target’s missing health, which suits the reactive spot healing Lightsmith does in high keys. Behind on gear, Lightsmith uses the same fallback trinkets as Herald, plus Freightrunner’s Flask for its Critical Strike burst.

Kith’ix, the Labyrinth and the Great Vault

  • Kith’ix drops a plate helm with a cantrip, a Mastery and Critical Strike one-hand sword, a healer trinket and a Mastery and Haste ring called Band of the Swarmcaller.
  • PTR builds cut Mythic Kith’ix loot from 344 to 324 on the Myth 3 of 6 track, so check the live tooltip before you plan around it.
  • The Labyrinth of Kindo’jan rewards Mythic gear per chamber, which makes it the best solo slot filler in the patch.
  • A +10 or higher key fills a Great Vault slot with Myth 1 of 6 gear at item level 318.
  • A raid vault slot now rewards one difficulty higher than the one you cleared.

Ascendant Venomstones Per Tree

Ascendant venomstones holy paladin priority depends on the tree, but the rules are shared. Ten Ascendant Venomstones raise a fully upgraded Season 2 Hero, Myth or max quality Tidal crafted weapon, trinket or neck by roughly 6 to 7 item levels, and that item can never be upgraded again. Stones drop from Heroic and Mythic raid bosses, +10 keys, Tier 11 Bountiful Delves and Nightmare Prey Hunt Champion chests, starting October 20.

Herald of the Sun stone order

  1. Soulcoiler Ritual Vessel gets the first 10 stones because its on-use scales with item level and fires inside every Avenging Wrath window.
  2. Baleful Hexblade gets the next 10 because a main hand carries the biggest Intellect budget in your kit.
  3. Aqirbane Reliquary comes last because a neck has no Intellect and gains the least.

Lightsmith stone order

  1. Baleful Hexblade or the Phoenixblade gets the first 10 stones because Lightsmith output is steady, and the weapon’s Intellect lifts every Judgment and every heal.
  2. Soulcoiler Ritual Vessel gets the next 10 because its burst still matters on the hardest pulls.
  3. Aqirbane Reliquary comes last for the same reason as on Herald, since a neck gives no Intellect.

Do not stone a Hero item you plan to replace with Myth next week. Ten stones is a lot of +10 keys to throw at an item you are about to vendor.

  • Herald uses Flawless Masterful Peridot in raid and Flawless Quick Amethyst in keys, following its Mastery and Haste priorities.
  • Lightsmith uses Flawless Quick Amethyst in keys and Masterful Peridot in raid, and lets crit come from gear rather than gems.
  • Both trees use the same flask, potion, food and oil, so the flask choice should simply follow your gear.

Racials matter more than most players admit. Dwarf Stoneform wipes poisons, bleeds and magic in keys, Blood Elf Arcane Torrent gives Holy Power, and Human dominates top arena ladders.

Macros, Addons and WeakAuras

WeakAuras is not part of the Midnight toolkit, so stop asking for the import string. Blizzard’s Cooldown Manager, Damage Meter and Boss Warnings do the basic job, and Arc UI extends the Cooldown Manager.

  • Details replaces the built in damage meter for anyone who wants real numbers.
  • DandersFrames tracks buffs and debuffs on raid frames, which is where healers live.
  • TargetedSpells highlights casts aimed at you or your party.
  • SenseiClassResourceBar shows exact Holy Power, which matters because overcapping is your biggest leak.
  • Ellesmere’s Beacon Reminders nags you when a beacon is missing, which matters most for Beacon of Faith players on either tree.
  • Plater handles nameplates for the Judgment and Consecration damage you do in keys.

Mouseover Holy Shock works for both trees: #showtooltip then /cast [@mouseover,help,nodead][] Holy Shock. The trinket macro /use 13 plus /use 14 fires whatever trinkets you wear.

  • Herald only needs a mouseover Divine Toll macro, so it can land on allies without retargeting.
  • Lightsmith only needs a mouseover Holy Armaments macro, so Holy Bulwark lands on the squishy under your cursor instead of whoever you happen to target.
  • Both trees benefit from mouseover macros for Lay on Hands, Blessing of Protection, Blessing of Sacrifice and Blessing of Freedom.

Season 2 Mythic+ and Labyrinth Notes

The Season 2 pool is Altar of Fangs, Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Kings’ Rest, Ruby Life Pools and Temple of Sethraliss. Holy Paladin brings Divine Shield for mechanic skips, Blessing of Protection for bleeds, Blessing of Freedom for roots and Devour, and Aura Mastery for the pull your tank should not have made.

  • Blinding Light is your only AoE stop, so save it for the cast that kills the group.
  • Blessing of Freedom removes the Devour effect, so press it before you waste a dispel.
  • Sitting on high Holy Power is better than dumping it into Shield of the Righteous before a spike.

The Labyrinth of Kindo’jan is a solo or companion challenge with Valeera Sanguinar at your side. Play it as Lightsmith, keep Beacon on yourself, and let Infusion procs carry your self healing.

Where Holy Paladin Sits in 12.1.5

The spec is S tier in Mythic+ and A tier in raid behind Preservation Evoker and Discipline Priest, and that is before you factor in the utility nobody else brings. Our ratings below are per tree.

TreeRaidMythic+PvP
Herald of the SunAAB
LightsmithCSA

Is holy paladin the promise of tomorrow worth maining? Yes. The spec walked into 12.1.5 with zero nerfs, top tier keys, a strong raid seat and the best external kit among healers. The only reason to reroll is if you hate mana management, because the 4-piece will remind you of it every pull.

Did patch 12.1.5 change Holy Paladin?

No. Every 12.1.5 dev note and the official patch notes skipped Paladins, so all 12.1 builds still apply.

Which hero tree should Holy Paladin use for raid?

Herald of the Sun, because Dawnlight and Sun’s Avatar give far stronger raid healing than Lightsmith in Season 2.

Which hero tree is best for high Mythic+ keys?

Lightsmith, which 84% of top Holy Paladins run for extra damage, self healing and safer defensive tools.

What should Holy Paladin upgrade first with Venomstones?

Herald stones Soulcoiler Ritual Vessel first, while Lightsmith stones the main hand weapon first, and both leave the neck last.

Is the Holy Paladin 4-piece worth chasing?

Yes, especially for Lightsmith, but it raises Holy Light mana cost by 50%, so stop spamming Holy Light.
