Marathon Season 2 Nightfall
The old faction upgrade grind for basic stats is dead. Good riddance. The Cradle is a new progression system that replaces every stat-gating faction unlock your agility ever suffered through. Feed the Matter Converter: called the Marathon Cradle progression system: unwanted gear and it returns WEAVEworm Energy. Better loot, more Energy. Spend that Energy across six stat categories. Hit breakpoints to unlock shell perks.
- Stat Categories 6
- Points to Max All Trees ~84
- Reallocation Penalty 0
- Shared Across Shells Yes
If you’re already here, visit one of these… there’re some completely Useless info 😉
The Cradle resets every season. Progress is shared across all Runner shells: so investing in Recharge benefits every shell you play. You can reallocate Energy between runs, at any time, for free. There is no excuse to be stuck in a bad build.
| Old System | Cradle System |
| Faction grind per stat | Dismantle gear for XP |
| Hazard capsules required | Junk loot works fine |
| Locked to shell-specific trees | Shared across all shells |
| No reallocation | Free respec anytime |
| Gated behind rep ranks | Just play the game |
Factions still exist, but now they gatekeep Armory gear: implants, chips, attachments: not your basic character stats. That’s the right call, and it only took one season to figure out.
Sentinel Runner Shell
Bungie’s answer to grenade spam is a man who shoots grenades out of the sky. The Sentinel runner shell Marathon is a defensive kit built around controlling tempo, punishing aggression, and making shotgun rushers rethink their life choices.
Abilities
- Defender System (Prime): Deploys a laser platform that destroys incoming grenades and missiles. Place it, let it work, enjoy the silence.
- Snare Mine (Tactical): Attaches to surfaces. Detonates into submunitions. Immobilizes whoever triggers it. Pair with a shotgun. You know what to do.
- Castle Doctrine (Passive): Increased resistance after taking splash damage. Bonus weapon handling for close-range weapons when surrounded. Essentially rewards you for letting them push.
- Prey Tracker (Trait): Motion-tracking radar. Moving enemies appear as red blips through walls on a dedicated HUD element. Think Heartbeat Sensor, but in a game where it actually changes outcomes.
Synergy: Castle Doctrine buffs close-range weapon handling. Both new Season 2 weapons: the KKV-9SD and D54: get direct benefit from this passive. Run Sentinel with either and the bonus activates exactly when you need it.
New Weapons
Two new close-range weapons. Both good. Both designed to make the existing pistol class less embarrassing. The KKV-9SD SMG Marathon and D54 arrive as the season’s headline guns, and neither is there to look pretty.
| Weapon | Type | Fire Rate | Best Range | Verdict |
| KKV-9SD | Pistol-frame SMG | 1,200 RPM | Close | Meta threat |
| D54 Battle Pistol | Full-auto burst pistol | Medium | Close–Mid | Sleeper pick |
KKV-9SD
1,200 rounds per minute with an integrated suppressor. Full-auto burst: hold trigger, keep shooting. Built to counter shotgun rushers who close distance without a pump. If someone full-swings without getting a shot off first, this clips them before they realize what happened. Weakness: small magazine. Without a purple-tier mag, taking on multiple targets requires circuit tracers or prayer. Pairs well with a marksman rifle for mid-range coverage the KKV can’t cover.
The KKV comes with a Folding Stock mod: folded gives hipfire bonuses, extended gives ADS stability. The KKV-9SD folding stock is exclusive to this weapon but also works on the D54.
D54 Battle Pistol
Burst-fire, high handling, integrated red-dot optic. Think Voli Rifle energy in a sidearm. Bungie describes it as a BR33/BRRT hybrid: stable, consistent, fast to draw. Damage fall-off will hurt at range: spec attachments toward range mitigation and chip mods that reward shield cracks or knockdowns. The D54 is the sniper rifle’s missing close-range companion. The Bully falls short in close-range fights; this doesn’t.
Heads-up: Weapon drop rates are reshuffled for Season 2. Guns that were everywhere in Season 1 may be scarce. Build new looting habits immediately.
New Gear & Attachments
Darksight Scopes (LAR Scopes)
These are night-vision optics that illuminate terrain and targets through the scope. Not wall-hacks: they increase visibility within the view cone, scaling with scope rarity. Clean picture, no gun model obstruction. The Darksight scope Marathon works in daylight too: clear reticle, easier target acquisition in any lighting condition. Expect these to become standard outside of Night Marsh as well.
Vector Rounds (Purple-Tier Mags)
Hold aim, fire floor: first bullet pulses light across the area. Anyone within range lights up. Same principle as the Darksight scope but delivered via magazine. Available on purple and gold tiers. Not a wall hack. Just cheaper than flashbangs and harder to counter.
New Utility
- Frost Mines: Claymores that explode in a radius and apply a slowing frost effect. Counter to triple-aggro compositions. Anyone hit needs a Mechanics Kit to clear the debuff: which also disables healing for ~90 seconds afterward.
- Vector Grenades: Throw and detonate. Illuminates the terrain and highlights targets in the blast zone. Same effect as Darksight scopes. Useful in every map, essential in Night Marsh.
- Signal Flares: Stack to six. Throw into darkness to illuminate a specific area or corner. Can bait enemy positioning or mark peaks. Potentially a universal “friendly” signal by color. Cheap, high utility, low weight.
- Flashlights: Toggle on/off during runs. Solves “can’t see anything” in Night Marsh. Creates “everyone can see you” as a side effect. Turn it off in the open. Leaving it on in a hallway or tunnel is the fastest way to become someone else’s easy clip.
Night Dire Marsh
This is not a skybox swap. Night Marsh Marathon is a slower, horror-paced version of Dire Marsh with fewer players, new enemies, environmental hazards, and objectives that didn’t exist before. Bungie describes it as survival horror. That’s accurate. Long sight lines disappear. The Anomaly cuts off usual routes. Darkness is the actual threat.
After the first free week, Day and Night Marsh rotate every 90 minutes. Most Dire Marsh contracts count in both variants. Night Marsh has exclusive contracts on top of that.
New Objectives: Encryption Certifications
Kill UESC commanders to loot Encrypted Certifications. Use them to fill your Certification meter: same system as hack panels on Cryo Archive. Required to use certain X-fill points. You need to grind for the privilege of leaving the map. Classic.
Hackable Towers: All 4 Locations
Four towers exist on Dire Marsh. Hack them for certifications and loot. Once claimed, they cannot be stolen. The Night Marsh tower locations are as follows:
- Quarantine: Left of the main building on the roadside, between two catwalk structures.
- Maintenance: Front of the building. Stand on the roof, look left.
- Greenhouse: Back-left corner, near the decontamination building.
- Complex: Inside Complex facing outward, left side toward the AI Uplink half.
Upper Complex Event
An optional high-loot puzzle event in the upper rooms of Complex Control: similar in design to the Outpost pinwheel. Access requires clearing the area first. Rarer loot, more risk, predictable location. Squads will camp it. Plan accordingly.
Meta Shifts
Shotgun rush compositions lose their free reign. Sentinel’s Snare Mines punish overextended pushes. Frost Mines create mandatory pauses in full-speed aggression. KKV-9SD clips anyone who over-commits without a pump already off. The Marathon Season 2 meta is shifting from “run fast, shoot first” toward “control spacing, read terrain, punish mistakes.”
| Playstyle | Season 1 | Season 2 |
| Shotgun Rush | Dominant | Punished |
| Marksman/Sniper | Backburner | Viable again |
| Grenade Spam | Strong | Sentinel says no |
| Defensive/Trap | Weak | Finally relevant |
| SMG + MR Combo | Niche | Optimal |
Sniper thermal scopes are removed this season. Long-range play just got harder to abuse. Snipers remain strong: just more fair. The D54 or KKV paired with a sniper is now the correct close-range safety net.
Eight new weapon chips arrive, including the Brain Freeze Chip: precision kills with eligible weapons trigger a frost explosion that spreads to nearby hostiles. Good. Pair it with anything that can hit precision shots reliably. It turns single kills into area-denial.
Other Notable Changes
- Duo Queue: Now a daily rotating playlist: Perimeter, Dire Marsh, Night Marsh, Outpost.
- PvE Modes: Experimental PvE queues coming mid-season. Details withheld until closer to launch. Bungie says “good timing.” Trust nothing, expect something.
- Faction Armory expanded: More implants, chips, and gear available for purchase. Rank-ups now require fewer rare materials. Contracts grant more rep per completion. A rare Bungie decision that improves QoL without breaking anything.
- Implants reworked: Now defined by perk first, with fixed stats that scale by rarity. Some implants (Logic Bomb, Triage Cloaking Device) now only exist at higher rarity tiers. Plan your loadout accordingly.
- Batch Conversion: Dismantle multiple items at once for Cradle XP. Should have been in Season 1. Better late than never.
Does Season 1 progress carry over to Season 2?
No. Full reset. Vault, credits, faction rank, Runner Level, inventory. All gone. Start assuming nothing survived.
What is the Cradle and how do I earn Energy for it?
New stat progression system. Dismantle unwanted gear in the Matter Converter. Higher rarity gear gives more Energy to allocate.
Can I respec my Cradle points if I mess up my build?
Yes, free, anytime, unlimited. Reset gets Energy fully refunded. No penalties. No excuses for staying in a bad build.
Is Night Marsh available all the time or does it rotate?
First week both run simultaneously. After that, Day and Night Marsh rotate every 90 minutes. Not concurrent.
Is the flashlight safe to use in Night Marsh?
Indoors it helps. Outdoors or in hallways it broadcasts your exact position to anyone not using one. Use situationally.
