Stop Using Hyper Squad
The Hyper Squad was a popular team-building approach that mixed heroes from two different factions: say, three Warriors and two Rangers. The idea: stack your highest-power heroes regardless of faction, brute-force everything with raw numbers. It worked fine. For a while.

Then Epigraphs arrived. Now it’s a liability. Congratulations on gambling with your entire mid-to-late game progression.
The Last Asylum Plague squad composition meta has fundamentally shifted. Mixed factions are no longer a creative strategy. They’re a handicap you’re voluntarily applying to yourself.

Why It Doesn’t Work Anymore
Reason 01: Epigraphs are faction-locked
Epigraphs are unlocked through the Raven building and provide major passive bonuses during combat. The catch: every Epigraph set is tied to a specific faction. Warrior Epigraphs only buff Warriors. Ranger Epigraphs only buff Rangers. Put a Warlock in a Warrior squad and that hero produces nothing for your Epigraph chain: a dead slot wearing expensive gear.
Example from the game “After Raven casts a skill, all Warrior allies gain +2.5% [stat] for 3 seconds.”: It says Warriors. Not heroes. Not allies. Warriors. Your mixed unit reads this and cries silently.
The Raven epigraph system is the single biggest reason the Hyper Squad is gone. Each complete Epigraph set is crafted per faction in the war shop. Using a UR Epigraph from the wrong faction is worse than using a purple one from the correct faction. Pause on that.
Reason 02: Faction lineup bonus
Running a pure faction squad gives compounding stat bonuses to every hero on the team. These aren’t cosmetic numbers. In late-game PvP, 5% attribute difference decides fights.
3 same faction +5%
4 same faction +15%
5 same faction +20%
Going from 4-1 to full 5 adds 5% across ATK, HP, and DEF for all heroes. Mixed squads stall at 15% and wave goodbye to the rest. The game is giving you free stats. Refusing them is your choice.
Reason 03: Research tree alignment
The hero research tree in Last Asylum splits into three separate faction branches: Warrior, Ranger, and Warlock. Research invested in the Warrior tree does nothing for a Ranger hero slotted into your squad. Split factions mean split research, which means split returns on your most expensive resource.
The correct approach: pick the faction that matches your strongest available heroes, research that tree exclusively, and let the bonuses compound. Mixing trees to “cover all bases” means you’re mediocre in three directions instead of dominant in one. Riveting strategy.
The Faction Counter System
Before you commit to a faction, understand the hero type matchup. Last Asylum uses a hard rock-paper-scissors counter system. A hero fighting a faction it counters takes 20% less damage. That’s not flavor: that’s fight-deciding math.
Warrior Counters Warlock
Ranger Counters Warrior
Warlock Counters Ranger
In PvP, scouting your opponent first and picking a faction counter squad is the correct play. This is impossible if you’re running a Hyper Squad: you have no clean counter identity. You’re bringing a blender to a chess match.
How to Build the Right Squad
Step 1: Pick your dominant faction
Look at what you actually own. Whichever faction has your strongest UR and SSR heroes: that’s your faction. Warriors are typically the most accessible early. F2P players in particular should commit to Warriors from day one: Arthur (UR Tank) and Marlena (UR Carry) are the spine of the most consistent early-to-mid squad in the game.
Step 2: Fill all 5 slots from that faction
Yes, even if that means benching a higher-level hero from another faction. A level 120 max-star out-of-faction hero wearing an irrelevant Epigraph does less for your squad than a weaker hero who actually triggers your faction bonuses. Power score lies. Hidden stats don’t.
| Squad Setup | Lineup Bonus | Epigraph Efficiency | Verdict |
| 5x same faction | +20% ATK/HP/DEF | Full set active | Correct |
| 4x same + 1 mixed | +15% (4 heroes) | 1 slot wasted | Acceptable short-term |
| 3x + 2x mixed (Hyper) | +5% only | 2 slots dead | Stop immediately |
Step 3: Assign Epigraphs correctly
In the Raven building, select the squad you want to buff, then equip the matching faction Epigraph set. If you’re running a Warrior squad, every Epigraph slot should be from the Warrior pool. Using a UR Ranger Epigraph on a Warrior squad is less effective than a purple Warrior Epigraph. Rarity means nothing when it’s feeding the wrong heroes.
The Raven evolve stage unlocks Epigraph tabs progressively. Plan your Raven upgrades with your faction strategy in mind: don’t level Raven randomly and hope the tabs line up with your squad.
Step 4: Align research and squad identity
Your research tree, your Epigraphs, and your hero roster should all point at the same faction. When these three systems converge, the squad synergy bonus becomes multiplicative in effect even if the numbers look modest on paper. This is how free-to-play accounts survive against whales: not by matching their spending, but by extracting every percentage point the game offers for free.
Hero Roles Within a Pure Faction
Committing to one faction doesn’t mean running five damage dealers and praying. Roles still matter.
- Tank (1-2 slots): Front line. Absorbs incoming damage. Arthur is the gold standard for Warriors. Bella is the best SSR alternative. Grifith fills this for Rangers.
- Carry (2 slots): Your damage dealers. Marlena, Kesso, Sivir for Warriors. These are the heroes your Epigraphs exist to protect.
- Support (1 slot): Buffs survivability or attack for the whole squad. Rarely wins fights alone. Stellar (Warlock) is the best healer in a game where healing is scarce.
Notice this requires all five slots to have a job. A mismatched out-of-faction hero doesn’t just miss Epigraph buffs: it occupies a role slot without contributing to the faction identity. Two losses for the price of one roster mistake.
On Celia specifically Level 120, max star, wrong faction for your current squad? Bench her. Using her breaks your lineup bonus and wastes an Epigraph slot. “But her stats are high”: yes. Irrelevant. She’s expensive furniture in the wrong room.
Is Hyper Squad ever acceptable in Last Asylum: Plague?
Only early, when you literally cannot fill five same-faction slots. Build toward pure faction as fast as possible.
What is the maximum faction lineup bonus with 5 same-faction heroes?
20% bonus to ATK, HP, and DEF for all five heroes. Missing one drops you to 15%.
Can I use a UR Epigraph from the wrong faction if nothing else is available?
No. A purple Epigraph matching your faction outperforms a UR from a mismatched one. Rarity loses to relevance.
Which faction should free-to-play players build first?
Warriors. Arthur and Marlena are accessible early and carry comfortably into mid-game without heavy spending.
Does the faction counter system apply to PvE as well as PvP?
Primarily PvP. For PvE farming, raw damage output and survivability matter more than counter matchups.
