Survival Hunter 12.1.5 Guide: Sentinel, Pack Leader, BiS and Tier Set

Survival in patch 12.1.5 is a Sentinel spec. Play Sentinel in raid, Mythic+ and PvP, stack Mastery right after Agility, build your 4-piece from head, shoulders, gloves and a catalyzed chest, and feed your first 10 Ascendant Venomstones to the weapon. Pack Leader survives as a priority-target raid build for people who enjoy being slightly wrong with confidence.

This Survival Hunter 12.1.5 guide assumes you already know which end of the polearm goes into the bug. Talents, the tier set, the key pool and the rotation all carry over from 12.1, so everything below is tuned for the Kith’ix pull, the Kindo’jan run, the Aqir Invasion and your Season 2 key, not for a War Within museum tour.

What 12.1.5 Actually Changes for Survival

The Promise of Tomorrow Survival Hunter gets exactly two bug fixes, both on Raptor Swipe. The Strike as One bonus from Raptor Swipe rank 3 now works while Aspect of the Eagle is up, and Raptor Swipe loses the extra range it was illegally enjoying under that same Aspect. If you were cleaving from 15 yards, enjoy it until October 13.

The real tuning already landed through 12.1 hotfixes, and it all points at one button.

  • September 22 raised Wildfire Bomb damage by 20% and cut its primary target bonus from 80% to 50%.
  • October 1 raised Wildfire Bomb periodic damage by another 20%, because the first pass forgot the untalented version.
  • PvP lost 10% of hunter Takedown damage, 15% of pet Takedown damage and 15% of Moonlight Chakram damage.

Everything else in the patch is content you will die in. Use this table to decide where the Venomstones and the suffering come from.

Sentinel vs Pack Leader: Pick Before You Press Anything

The Sentinel vs Pack Leader survival argument ended weeks ago. Sentinel won raid, Mythic+ and PvP, and roughly four of every five top-key Survivals run it. Pack Leader keeps a narrow job: marginally more damage on a single priority target in raid.

TreeWhat it doesRaidMythic+PvP
SentinelSpending Tip of the Spear can summon an owl that applies Sentinel’s Mark, making your next Wildfire Bomb hit that target 40% harder. Takedown turns into Moonlight Chakram for its window. Don’t Look Back keeps a shield ticking on you.DefaultDefaultDefault
Pack LeaderEvery 30 seconds your next Kill Command summons a beast through Howl of the Pack Leader: a Wyvern for 10% damage, a Boar charge, or a Bear bleed on up to 8 targets. Takedown hands you a free Howl and a Stampede.Priority-target nicheFallbackAvoid

Sentinel Talents

Every Sentinel build shares the same spine: Raptor Swipe as the apex, Primal Surge so Kill Command hands out 2 Tip stacks, Strike as One, Savagery to trim the Takedown cooldown, Lunar Calling so Takedown summons the owl, and Can’t Miss, Won’t Miss for 2 more seconds of Takedown. The Survival Hunter talents 12.1.5 decisions happen around that spine.

Sentinel Raid Single Target

  • Take the Bombardier package, because single target damage lives and dies on Wildfire Bomb.
  • Take Stalk and Strike, since every Moonlight Chakram throw cuts 10 seconds off Wildfire Bomb.
  • Take Razor Edge instead of Lethal Calibration on pure single target, since Lethal Calibration needs extra enemies to do anything.
  • Take Lethal Barbs for auto attack Focus, which also keeps dual wield a legal option.

Sentinel Raid AoE

  • Drop the Bombardier package and pick up Twin Fangs, so Takedown grants 3 Tip stacks on its own.
  • Take Lethal Calibration, since each enemy your bomb hits removes 2 seconds from Boomstick, up to 10.
  • Take Wildfire Shells, so every Boomstick that connects removes 3 seconds from Wildfire Bomb.
  • Take Twilight Requiem and Flamefang Pitch for the extra pack damage the boss never asked for.

Sentinel Mythic+

  • Start from the raid AoE build, because a dungeon is just a raid AoE fight with worse tanks.
  • Keep Don’t Look Back, which is the main reason Sentinel lives through tyrannical bosses that Pack Leader does not.
  • Spend the loose points on Kodo Tranquilizer or Emergency Salve depending on what the route needs dispelled.
  • Swap Stalk and Strike out only when the dungeon has nothing worth a Moonlight Chakram, which is never.

Sentinel PvP

  • Take Razor Edge, Primal Surge, Bombardier and Lethal Barbs for crit-loaded Takedown windows.
  • Run Scatter Shot, Sticky Tar Bomb and Tracker’s Net as the control set, since Scatter Shot is back and cleanses DoTs on top.
  • Swap in Mending Bandage against bleed comps and Roar of Sacrifice or Interlope when your healer is the target.
  • Expect Moonlight Chakram and Takedown to hit softer than in PvE, since both carry PvP nerfs.

Pack Leader Talents

Pack Leader shares the same spec spine: Raptor Swipe as the apex, Primal Surge, Strike as One, Savagery and Lethal Barbs. On top of that it stacks Stampede! so Takedown summons a Stampede, Dire Summons so Kill Command and Raptor Strike shave the Howl cooldown, Better Together for pet and Raptor Strike damage, No Mercy for 35% more bleed damage, and Fury of the Wyvern so Wildfire Bomb stretches the Wyvern buff by up to 10 seconds.

Pack Leader Raid Single Target

  • Take the Bombardier package, because Wildfire Bomb is still the button that pays rent.
  • Take Razor Edge over Lethal Calibration on pure single target, since there is nothing to bounce cooldown off.
  • Keep Fury of the Wyvern, since every bomb inside the Wyvern window extends your 10% damage buff.
  • Run this build only on fights where one target matters, because it is marginally ahead there and behind everywhere else.

Pack Leader Raid AoE

  • Drop the Bombardier package for Twin Fangs, so Takedown arrives with 3 Tip stacks.
  • Take Lethal Calibration and Wildfire Shells to loop Boomstick and Wildfire Bomb off each other.
  • Take Flamefang Pitch, since the Boar and Bear already handle stacked targets and the pitch finishes the job.
  • Accept that Sentinel still out-damages this build on big pulls, and play it only if you refuse to change.

Pack Leader Mythic+

  • Start from the raid AoE build and keep Twin Fangs, Lethal Calibration and Wildfire Shells.
  • Take Shell Cover as your defensive node, since it buffs Survival of the Fittest instead of giving you a free passive shield.
  • Spend loose points on Kodo Tranquilizer or Emergency Salve based on the route.
  • Know that Pack Leader is the fallback here, chosen by roughly one in five top players.

Pack Leader PvP

  • Take Razor Edge, Primal Surge, Bombardier and Lethal Barbs, the same damage core Sentinel uses.
  • Run Scatter Shot, Sticky Tar Bomb and Tracker’s Net, then swap Mending Bandage, Roar of Sacrifice or Interlope by matchup.
  • Expect the Bear to do far less than in PvE, since its PvP damage took a 40% cut.
  • Switch to Sentinel for rated play, because Pack Leader has no tool Sentinel lacks and loses the Moonlight Chakram pressure.

Sentinel Rotation and Priority

The Survival Hunter rotation 12.1.5 rule is simple and cruel: every damaging button should be Tipped. Kill Command gives 2 Tip stacks with Primal Surge, so the loop is Kill Command, two Tipped abilities, repeat. Sentinel layers owl marks and a chakram on top.

Sentinel Single Target Opener

  1. Throw Wildfire Bomb about 1.25 seconds before the pull.
  2. Press Takedown together with your potion and on-use trinket.
  3. Throw Wildfire Bomb.
  4. Press Kill Command.
  5. Press Boomstick.
  6. Throw Wildfire Bomb.
  7. Press Raptor Strike, then Kill Command, then Raptor Strike.

Sentinel Single Target Priority

  1. Keep Hunter’s Mark on the boss.
  2. Press Boomstick on cooldown.
  3. Throw Wildfire Bomb when Sentinel’s Mark is on the target or a charge is 4 to 6 seconds from recharging.
  4. Throw Moonlight Chakram while Takedown is active.
  5. Press Raptor Swipe with Tip of the Spear.
  6. Press Raptor Strike with Tip of the Spear.
  7. Press Kill Command whenever Tip is empty, without overcapping Focus or charges.

Sentinel AoE Priority

  1. Press Kill Command when you are out of Tip.
  2. Press Boomstick with Tip.
  3. Throw Wildfire Bomb, prioritizing targets with Sentinel’s Mark.
  4. Press Takedown with Tip.
  5. Throw Moonlight Chakram with Tip.
  6. Press Raptor Swipe with Tip, then Raptor Strike.

Sentinel Cooldowns and What Never to Clip

  • Takedown lasts 8 seconds, 10 with Can’t Miss, Won’t Miss, so the whole window must be pre-planned.
  • Takedown also summons your owl through Lunar Calling, so a Wildfire Bomb should be ready to eat the mark.
  • Kill Command holds 2 charges on a 5 second recharge, and a capped charge is damage you deleted.
  • Tip of the Spear caps at 3 stacks, and a Kill Command at 3 stacks is the most expensive no-op in the spec.
  • Each Moonlight Chakram cuts 10 seconds off Wildfire Bomb, so bombs should never sit at full charges during Takedown.

Takedown hits twice: you, then your pet about a second later. Without Twin Fangs, cast it with at least 2 Tip of the Spear stacks, or the pet hit lands untipped and your biggest cooldown opens with a shrug.

Pack Leader Rotation and Priority

Pack Leader runs the same Tip loop: Kill Command, two Tipped abilities, repeat. The difference is that some Kill Commands are worth more than others, because they summon beasts.

Pack Leader Single Target Opener

  1. Throw Wildfire Bomb about 1 second before the pull.
  2. Press Kill Command.
  3. Use your potion and on-use trinket.
  4. Press Takedown, which grants Howl of the Pack Leader and arms Stampede.
  5. Press Kill Command to release the Stampede and a beast.
  6. Throw Wildfire Bomb twice.
  7. Press Boomstick, then Raptor Strike.

Pack Leader Single Target Priority

  1. Keep Hunter’s Mark on the boss.
  2. Press Kill Command when a Howl beast is ready, without wasting Tip stacks.
  3. Throw Wildfire Bomb with Tip, especially while the Wyvern is active.
  4. Press Boomstick with Tip.
  5. Press Raptor Swipe with Tip.
  6. Press Raptor Strike with or without Tip.
  7. Press Kill Command as filler.

Pack Leader AoE Priority

  1. Press Kill Command when a Howl beast is ready, since the Boar and Bear are your cleave.
  2. Throw Wildfire Bomb on cooldown into the biggest pack.
  3. Press Boomstick as often as Lethal Calibration lets you, which in big pulls is roughly every 15 seconds.
  4. Press Raptor Swipe with Tip, then Raptor Strike.

Pack Leader Cooldowns and What Never to Clip

  • Takedown arms Stampede, so the next Kill Command must follow immediately or the window bleeds out.
  • The Wyvern buff lasts 12 seconds and Fury of the Wyvern extends it with every Wildfire Bomb, so stack bombs inside it.
  • Howl comes every 30 seconds and Dire Summons shortens it, so a ready beast should never wait behind filler.
  • Kill Command charges and Tip stacks follow the same rule as Sentinel, and capping either one is self-sabotage.
  • Hatchet Toss is your ranged filler when mechanics drag you out of melee, so stop standing still waiting.

Stat Priority

The Survival Hunter stat priority 12.1.5 is short: Agility, then Mastery, then the rest argue. Mastery: Spirit Bond buffs both you and the pet, and both trees lean on the pet harder than ever.

Sentinel Stats

  • Agility comes first, always.
  • Mastery is the best secondary for Sentinel in every content type.
  • Critical Strike sits just above Haste on single target.
  • Haste moves above Critical Strike in heavy AoE and Mythic+.
  • Versatility is last, take it only when nothing else exists.

Pack Leader Stats

  • Agility comes first, always.
  • Mastery is the best secondary for Pack Leader as well.
  • Critical Strike and Haste are roughly equal, and Pack Leader wants slightly more Haste than Sentinel.
  • Haste pulls ahead in AoE, since faster Kill Commands mean faster beasts.
  • Versatility is last, take it only when nothing else exists.

Both trees hit the same diminishing return walls. Past these ratings each stat loses 10% of its value, so stop stacking one stat into a cliff.

Tier 36 Set: Skulking Viper’s Ambush

The Survival Hunter tier set 12.1.5 is passive, and Blizzard knows it. Both bonuses run through Mongoose Fury, which is baseline and makes Raptor Strike buff your next Raptor Strike by 10% for 8 seconds, overlapping.

BonusEffect
2-pieceMongoose Fury also increases Wildfire Bomb damage by 10%.
4-pieceEach Boomstick blast extends Mongoose Fury by 1 second, and Mongoose Fury effects are increased by 10%.

How Sentinel Uses the Set

Sentinel throws more Wildfire Bombs than anyone, thanks to Stalk and Strike, and its best bombs land on Sentinel’s Mark for 40% extra. The 2-piece adds 10% on top of every one of those as long as Raptor Strike keeps Mongoose Fury alive. The 4-piece turns each Boomstick into 4 extra seconds of Fury, which covers the gaps in Takedown windows. Nothing changes in your buttons, and the set is worth a solid chunk because bombs are your damage.

How Pack Leader Uses the Set

Pack Leader pushes more of its damage through beasts and Stampede, which the set does not touch. The 2-piece still buffs Wildfire Bomb, which Pack Leader throws on cooldown and stacks inside the Wyvern window. The 4-piece extends Mongoose Fury through Boomstick, and Lethal Calibration in AoE gives Pack Leader more Boomsticks to do it. Nothing changes in your buttons, and the set is worth a bit less to Pack Leader because a bigger slice of its damage comes from pets.

Where the Tokens Drop

Hunters take the Cast tokens they share with Shamans and Evokers. Every slot below comes from The Venomous Abyss.

Fastest Route to 4-Piece

  1. Take every tier piece the Great Vault offers, since it is the only guaranteed drop you get each week.
  2. Kill Ula’tek on any difficulty and turn the Curio into whichever slot you are missing.
  3. Push seasonal gear through the Catalyst, which keeps secondary stats in Season 2.
  4. Catalyst the Awoken Dreadfang Cuirass into your chest, since players report it keeps its Mastery proc.
  5. Spend Nebulous Voidcores only on items that are not tier, since tokens arrive anyway.

Best in Slot Gear

The Survival Hunter BiS 12.1.5 list barely changes between trees. The difference sits in the trinkets, and it follows the Haste lean of Pack Leader.

Alt BiS If You Are Behind

  • Keeper’s Seething Core is the best fallback trinket for either tree, since its Haste stacks run on attacks you already make.
  • Gebbo’s Bottomless Bag from The Lost Explorers is a fine passive secondary stat stick until the Ula’tek trinket shows up.
  • Font of Venomous Rage from Ula’tek is a reasonable on-use for packs if the Heart refuses to drop.
  • Lightspire Core from The Blinding Vale is the Mythic+ trinket to chase when raid loot hates you.
  • Dual wield is viable after the Lethal Barbs rework, so a pair of good one-handers beats a bad polearm.
  • Any Venomous Abyss mail piece can go through the Catalyst into a missing tier slot.

The Survival Hunter Midnight Season 2 key pool is where most of that fallback gear lives: Altar of Fangs, Murder Row, Den of Nalorakk, The Blinding Vale, Voidscar Arena, Kings’ Rest, Ruby Life Pools and Temple of Sethraliss. A timed +10 already hits the gear ceiling, so pushing higher buys rating, not item level.

Ascendant Venomstones

Venomstones drop from Heroic and Mythic raid bosses, Mythic+ at +10 and above, Tier 11 Bountiful Delves and Nightmare Prey Hunt Champion chests. Pick up the Ascending with Venomstones quest from Orin Straylight in Silvermoon City, collect 10, and spend them near the Catalyst on a fully upgraded Hero, Myth or max-quality crafted weapon, trinket or necklace.

Sentinel Venomstone Order

  1. Put the first 10 stones into Abyssal Broodfiend’s Bardiche, because weapon stats feed every Raptor Strike, Raptor Swipe and Takedown hit.
  2. Put the next 10 into Voracious Heart of Ula’tek, because its burst lines up with Takedown and the owl window.
  3. Put the third batch into Aqirbane Reliquary, because a necklace is pure secondary stats and Sentinel wants Mastery and Crit.

Pack Leader Venomstone Order

  1. Put the first 10 stones into Abyssal Broodfiend’s Bardiche, because weapon stats feed every Raptor Strike, Raptor Swipe and Takedown hit.
  2. Put the next 10 into Voracious Heart of Ula’tek, because its burst lines up with Takedown and Stampede.
  3. Put the third batch into Keeper’s Seething Core or Aqirbane Reliquary, whichever you will still wear at the end of the season.

Never upgrade a trinket you plan to replace next week. The Ascendant Venomstones grind is long, and pouring them into a placeholder is the most efficient way to feel stupid twice.

Macros, Addons and Tracking

WeakAuras ended support for Midnight, so your old Survival pack is a nostalgia folder. Blizzard’s Cooldown Manager handles the tracking now, and these macros handle the rest.

#showtooltip Misdirection
/cast [@focus,help,nodead][@pet,exists,nodead] Misdirection
#showtooltip Muzzle
/cast [@focus,harm,nodead][] Muzzle
#showtooltip Freezing Trap
/cast [@cursor] Freezing Trap
#showtooltip Takedown
/use 13
/cast Takedown
  • The Misdirection macro sends threat to the tank on focus and falls back to the pet.
  • The Muzzle macro kicks your focus target first, which is how Mythic+ casters die on time.
  • The Freezing Trap macro drops the trap at your cursor without a targeting circle.
  • The Takedown macro fires your top trinket with it, so put Voracious Heart of Ula’tek in slot 13.
  • Sentinel should track Sentinel’s Mark on nameplates, since bombing an unmarked target wastes 40%.
  • Pack Leader should track the Howl of the Pack Leader buff in the Cooldown Manager, since a ready beast waiting on filler is lost damage.
  • Both trees should track Tip of the Spear stacks, Takedown and Boomstick, and nothing else matters as much.
  • The SimulationCraft addon still exports your gear to Raidbots, which is the only honest way to settle stat arguments.

Keep Harpoon, Disengage, Aspect of the Turtle, Exhilaration and Survival of the Fittest on easy keys. Your pet carries Primal Rage and Master’s Call, so pick a pet family with the utility your group is missing.

Where Survival Sits Right Now

Survival opened Season 2 near the bottom of the DPS charts, then two Wildfire Bomb buffs dragged it into the middle. The Survival Hunter PvP 12.1.5 picture is brighter than PvE, with Scatter Shot back and Sentinel bombs hitting hard even after nerfs.

TreeRaidMythic+PvP
SentinelBAA
Pack LeaderB minusCC minus
  • Sentinel earns its raid B from strong AoE and owl-boosted bombs, and bombs that hit hard on any council fight.
  • Sentinel earns its Mythic+ A from Boomstick and bomb looping plus Don’t Look Back keeping you alive.
  • Sentinel earns its PvP A from Takedown burst, Scatter Shot and Moonlight Chakram pressure.
  • Pack Leader earns its raid B minus from a small single target edge and nothing else.
  • Pack Leader earns its Mythic+ C because Sentinel does more damage and survives better.
  • Pack Leader earns its PvP C minus because the Bear got gutted and Sentinel does everything better.

Worth maining into 12.1.5 if you play Sentinel and like melee with a ranged safety net. Not worth it if you want to top meters, because Survival is a fun spec in the middle of the pack, and the middle of the pack is still a pack.

What is the best hero talent tree for Survival Hunter in 12.1.5?

Sentinel, for raid, Mythic+ and PvP. Pack Leader only keeps a small single target edge in raid.

What is the Survival Hunter stat priority in Season 2?

Agility first, then Mastery, then Critical Strike and Haste close together, with Versatility last for both hero trees.

What does the Survival Hunter Tier 36 set do?

Mongoose Fury boosts Wildfire Bomb by 10%, and Boomstick blasts extend Mongoose Fury while increasing its effects by 10%.

Where should Survival Hunters spend Ascendant Venomstones first?

Spend the first 10 on Abyssal Broodfiend’s Bardiche, then the Voracious Heart of Ula’tek, then the necklace.

Does 12.1.5 change Survival Hunter talents or rotation?

No. It only fixes two Raptor Swipe bugs with Aspect of the Eagle, everything else carries over from 12.1.
