Best Windrose Mods: Install Guide for QoL & Speed
Windrose mods live on one platform: Nexus Mods. No Steam Workshop. No CurseForge. No in-game browser. Kraken Express didn’t bother with official tools yet, so the community reverse-engineered where the engine loads .pak files and built from there. The result is a scrappy, growing library of around 300 mods: mostly quality-of-life, mostly functional.
The game dropped on Steam in April 2025, still in Early Access. The base experience is playable. The base experience also includes a 9-teleport cap, fog that hides islands three feet away, and a pickaxe range that requires building scaffolding inside caves. Mods fix all of that. This guide covers what to install and how to not destroy your game files doing it.
The Mods Worth Running
Ranked loosely by how urgently you’ll want them. Windrose Nexus mods are almost entirely .pak drops: installation is copy-paste.
| Mod | Category | What It Does | Verdict |
| Land Fast Travel | QoL | Build fast travel points anywhere, not just coast | Install immediately |
| More Fast Travel Points | QoL | Removes the 9-point cap. Unlimited bells. | Pair with above |
| Better Minimap Range | Exploration | Wider fog-of-war reveal while exploring | Stops you missing islands |
| Disable Fog | Exploration | Removes atmospheric fog entirely | Ugly but useful |
| Faster Ships | Movement | Configurable speed boost for your vessel | Pick a modest variant |
| More Mineral Resources | Rates | Ore yield multiplier (2x–100x) | 5x is sane |
| More Animal Resources | Rates | More drops from wildlife | Saves hours |
| More Tree Resources | Rates | Wood yield multiplier | Pair with storage mods |
| Pickaxe Range | QoL | Extended reach: no more cave scaffolding | Requires UE4SS |
| More Storage Space | Inventory | Larger chest capacity | Necessary |
| More Stacks | Inventory | Bigger carry stacks per item slot | 10x–1000x options |
| UnlockBuildAll | Progression | Scroll unlocks every recipe on new characters | New character only |
| Windrose Mod Manager | Tool | Drag-drop installs, backups, SFTP server support | If you run a server |
Don’t stack multiple rate-multiplier mods. They overlap, conflict, and the math gets embarrassing. Pick one.
How to Install Windrose Mods
Three methods. Most mods use Method A. Read which one applies before you start dragging files into places.
Method A: Standard .pak Drop (Most Mods)
Applies to: Land Fast Travel, More Fast Travel Points, Better Minimap Range, Faster Ships, More Animal/Mineral/Tree Resources, More Stacks, More Storage Space, UnlockBuildAll
- Download the mod from nexusmods.com/games/windrose: Manual Download, then Slow Download.
- Extract the .zip file (right-click → Extract All).
- In Steam: right-click Windrose → Manage → Browse Local Files.
- Navigate to R5 / Content / Paks /
- Create a folder named ~mods if it doesn’t exist. The tilde matters.
- Drop the .pak file inside. Done.
The ~mods Folder
The Windrose pak file location that matters is …\R5\Content\Paks\~mods\. Create it if it’s missing. Without the tilde, the game load order may ignore your files entirely: a quiet failure with no error message because that would be too helpful.
Method B: UE4SS Required (Pickaxe Range)
- Download the Pickaxe Range variant that says “includes UE4SS.”
- Extract the archive. You’ll see an R5 folder inside.
- Copy that entire R5 folder.
- Paste it directly into the main Windrose game folder (the one Steam opens when you Browse Local Files: one level above R5/Content).
- Confirm merge when prompted.

UE4SS: What It Actually Is
UE4SS Windrose is a scripting framework that lets mods hook into the Unreal Engine runtime rather than just swapping packaged assets. On its own it does nothing. It’s infrastructure. If a mod requires it, grab the variant that bundles it: don’t install UE4SS separately unless you enjoy reading GitHub issues at midnight.
Method C: AppData Config File (Disable Fog)
- Download the mod and extract.
- Press Win + R, type %appdata%, press Enter.
- Go one level up (to AppData), then: Local → R5 → Saved → Config → Windows
- Paste the Engine.ini file here and confirm replace.
Back up the original Engine.ini first. Yes, really.
Close Windrose completely before touching any files. Mods installed while the game runs either fail silently or corrupt your session. The game won’t warn you.
Multiplayer & Server Notes
Unlike Valheim, you cannot just install mods server-side and call it done. Windrose multiplayer mods generally need to be on both the server and every player’s client. If your crew is missing a mod you’re running, expect desyncs or silent failures.
Exception: a few mods (First Person Camera, Fast Travel Plus client variant) are client-only: personal preference tweaks that don’t affect server state.
Windrose Mod Manager by Vercadi handles server installs with SFTP support. Open source, backs up before touching anything, edits ServerDescription.json without breaking its tagged-JSON format. Worth the ten minutes to set up if you’re hosting for others. The Windrose dedicated server mods workflow becomes significantly less painful with it.
What to Use When
Some of these mods belong on a first run. Others are mercy for your second attempt at 40 hours of grinding.
First Playthrough: Safe to Use
Land Fast Travel, More Fast Travel Points, Better Minimap Range, Faster Ships, Pickaxe Range. These reduce friction without removing Windrose survival gameplay challenge. You’re still playing the game: you’re just not spending 40 minutes sailing to a point you’ve already visited.
Second Playthrough: Let Loose
Loot multipliers, More Stacks, More Storage Space, UnlockBuildAll. These flatten the progression curve. On a replay you’ve already proven you can handle the grind: there’s no reason to do it again. Windrose QoL mods exist precisely for this.
UnlockBuildAll: The Fine Print
This mod gives a new character a scroll that unlocks every recipe. New character only: it won’t do anything on an existing save. If you want the unlocks on your main character, you’ll need to craft the items on the new one and transfer them over. Tedious? Yes. Intentional? Probably not.
Where do Windrose mods go?
Into R5/Content/Paks/~mods/ inside your Steam game folder. Create the folder if it’s missing.
Do mods work on multiplayer servers?
Most need to be installed on both server and every client. Check each mod’s description for exceptions.
What is UE4SS and do I need it?
It’s a scripting layer for Unreal Engine mods. Only required for mods that explicitly say so, like Pickaxe Range.
Will mods break after a Windrose update?
Possibly. Early Access updates can invalidate .pak mods. Check Nexus after each patch before relaunching.
Is there a mod manager for Windrose?
Yes. Windrose Mod Manager by Vercadi on Nexus supports local and SFTP server installs with automatic backups.
