WoW Forever Blackwing Lair Guide: Bosses, Loot, Comps and Entrance
Blackwing Lair in WoW Forever is eight bosses, 40 players and one Onyxia Scale Cloak per head, or the raid does not survive the start of Nefarian phase 2. Attune with Blackhand’s Command, then touch the Orb of Command next to the Blackrock Spire entrance. Bosses drop Tier 2 bracers, belts, boots, gloves, shoulders and chests; helms come from Onyxia, legs from Ragnaros.
One sober note before the suffering. The World of Warcraft Forever raids calendar opens December 9, 2026 with The Barrow Deeps (10 players), Hyjal Summit (20) and Onyxia’s Lair (40). The lair has no date yet, and the summer 2027 revamped iconic raid is unnamed. Until Blizzard touches it, the tested ruleset below is your playbook, because old mechanics remain the most reliable predictor of how your raid dies.
| Parameter | Value |
|---|---|
| Location | Top of Blackrock Spire, Blackrock Mountain |
| Raid size | 40 players |
| Bosses | 8, fixed order |
| Attunement | Blackhand’s Command |
| Mandatory gear | Onyxia Scale Cloak for tanks from Firemaw, for everyone on Nefarian |
| Loot tier | Tier 2 (six slots) |
| Lockout | 7 days in the tested ruleset; Forever lockouts are unpublished |
Entrance Location and Coordinates
Blackrock Mountain straddles Searing Gorge and Burning Steppes, and both gates lead to the same lava cavern. Alliance flies to Morgan’s Vigil in Burning Steppes or Thorium Point in Searing Gorge. Horde flies to Kargath in Badlands and walks through Searing Gorge, or lands at Flame Crest in Burning Steppes.
| Point | Where | Coordinates |
|---|---|---|
| Mountain gate, north side | Searing Gorge map | /way 35.4 84.7 |
| Mountain gate, south side | Burning Steppes map, northwest corner, end of the main road west | Follow the road, the ramp is impossible to miss |
| Orb of Command | Blackrock Mountain, corridor right of the Blackrock Spire portal | Interior map, no world coordinates |
Here is how to enter BWL in WoW Forever without a map addon holding your hand.
- Enter the mountain and follow the outer rim of the Molten Span to the north side.
- Climb the big chain upward toward the Blackrock Spire portal.
- Before the portal, turn right into the hallway patrolled by Scarshield orcs.
- Walk to the end of the hallway and click the Orb of Command to zone straight into the raid.
No attunement means the scenic route. Enter Blackrock Spire in raid groups, kill Warchief Rend Blackhand, walk past Awbee into the Scarshield and dragonkin room before the ramp to The Beast, and take the swirling portal down the corridor. You must be in a raid group, and your raid leader must enjoy ferrying people in batches of ten.
Attunement: Blackhand’s Command
The Blackwing Lair attunement in WoW Forever is one quest and one Upper Blackrock Spire clear. It requires level 55 and is available to both factions, so nobody gets to hide behind faction flavor text.
- Kill the Scarshield Quartermaster in the right hand hallway outside the Blackrock Spire portal.
- Loot Blackhand’s Command and right click it to start the quest.
- Clear Upper Blackrock Spire and kill General Drakkisath.
- Click the Orb of Ascension behind Drakkisath to complete the quest.
- Use the Orb of Command from now on and pretend the first run never happened.
Best Raid Composition: Tanks, Healers, DPS
The WoW Forever raid comp for this place is melee heavy, because weapons are strong at this gear level and casters still lack spell power. Warriors and Rogues stack, Hunters handle every Frenzy, and Priests shield tanks before the drakes breathe shadow on them.
| Class | Count | Job in BWL |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | 10 | 2 main tanks, 2 off tanks, the rest Fury |
| Rogue | 6 | Top DPS, disarm Suppression Devices |
| Mage | 5 | AoE whelps and Bone Constructs, decurse |
| Warlock | 4 | DPS, Felhunter dispels on Chromaggus |
| Priest | 5 | 4 healers and 1 Shadow; shields before Shadow Flame |
| Hunter | 3 | Tranquilizing Shot, trash kiting, Feign Death |
| Druid | 2 | Healing, decurse Veil of Shadow |
| Paladin or Shaman | 5 | Healing, blessings or totems |
| Role | Players | Minimum for progression |
|---|---|---|
| Tanks | 4 | 5 on Vaelastrasz, 3 on Ebonroc |
| Healers | 11 | 8 Priest style group healers on Vaelastrasz help |
| DPS | 25 | Melee majority, at least 3 Hunters |
Forever breaks the old faction split. Undead Paladins give Horde blessings, and Dwarf Shamans give Alliance totems, so both factions can run mixed healing cores. Both factions also now eat the Paladin and Shaman class calls on Nefarian. Congratulations on your equality.
- Rogues must stay stealthed through the Suppression Rooms and keep disarming devices.
- Hunters remove Frenzy with Tranquilizing Shot on Flamegor and Chromaggus, and a late shot costs a tank.
- Priests are the best answer to Shadow Flame, because a shield absorbs the hit before it lands.
- Mages and Druids remove Veil of Shadow from the Nefarian tank on sight.
- Warlock Felhunters use Devour Magic on the blue affliction during Chromaggus.
- Druids put Razorgore dragonkin to sleep with Hibernate, and Mages sheep humanoids with Polymorph.
Best Route and Trash
The route through Blackwing Lair in WoW Forever is linear, and the lair does not care about your schedule. Pull slowly where the packs are tight, and never let a knockback send someone into a fresh pack.
- Kill Razorgore the Untamed in Dragonmaw Garrison, the first room.
- Kill Vaelastrasz the Corrupt in Shadow Wing Lair, and tag fleeing Blackwing Technicians for Elementium Ore.
- Pull the tight packs after Vaelastrasz back into his room one at a time.
- Crawl through both Suppression Rooms and kill Broodlord Lashlayer at the top.
- Pull the first laboratory packs, then kill Firemaw at the doorway Broodlord guarded.
- Clear Technicians, Wyrmguards and Overseers, then kill Ebonroc and Flamegor near the ramp corner.
- Pull the lever to release Chromaggus.
- Talk to Lord Victor Nefarius on his throne to start Nefarian.
| Mob | Why it hurts | Answer |
|---|---|---|
| Blackwing Technician | Bombs that erase tanks and melee | Hunters pull them and kite away, raid ignores them |
| Death Talon Hatcher | Elite guards of the Suppression Rooms, 20 minute respawn | Hunters focus them, pull away from devices |
| Corrupted whelps (all flights) | Endless respawn, each color resists its own school | AoE, carry wands of different elements |
| Death Talon Wyrmguard | Stomp and stun packs of three, random elemental weakness | Tank apart, find the weakness, use Free Action Potions |
| Death Talon Overseer | Heavy hitters that punish stacking | Tank separately, Hunter kites and feigns if needed |
| Blackwing Spellbinder | Magic damage and Polymorph | Melee kill it first |
| Blackwing Mage | Low health, high burst on the orb controller | Interrupt and kill instantly |
The Suppression Rooms apply Suppression Aura, which slows movement, attacks and casting. Rogues use Disarm Trap, devices reactivate at random, and the raid stacks on the right side to avoid being knocked off the upper ledge. Hourglass Sand drops from trash here and later; bank every grain for Chromaggus.
Boss Abilities and Strategy
| # | Boss | Tier 2 slot | What kills you |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Razorgore the Untamed | Bracers | Healer aggro on 52 adds |
| 2 | Vaelastrasz the Corrupt | Belt | Missing DPS in 3 minutes |
| 3 | Broodlord Lashlayer | Boots | Threat resets, Mortal Strike |
| 4 | Firemaw | Gloves (shared) | Flame Buffet stacks |
| 5 | Ebonroc | Gloves (shared) | Missed taunts |
| 6 | Flamegor | Gloves (shared) | Slow Tranquilizing Shot |
| 7 | Chromaggus | Shoulders | Five afflictions on one player |
| 8 | Nefarian | Chest | No cloak, ignored class calls |
Razorgore the Untamed
Two phases. Kill Grethok the Controller and his Blackwing Guardsman pair, then mind control Razorgore from the Orb of Domination for 90 seconds and smash every egg. If Razorgore dies with eggs left, he explodes and wipes the raid, which is at least efficient.
- Destroy Egg has a 3 second cast and a 7 second cooldown, and it is the only priority.
- Calm Dragonkin sleeps a dragonkin for 30 seconds while Destroy Egg recovers.
- Mind Exhaustion locks the previous controller out of the orb for 1 minute.
- Adds are Death Talon Dragonspawn, Blackwing Mage and Blackwing Legionnaire, up to 52 at once.
- Phase 2 brings Conflagration on the top threat target, so two tanks build threat because Razorgore ignores taunts.
- Fireball Volley hits everyone within 45 yards roughly every 15 seconds, so hide behind pillars.
Put a tank on the orb for the final eggs. Pet classes dismiss pets before clicking, and everyone clicks once, because double clicks give the debuff without the control.
Vaelastrasz the Corrupt
The first real DPS check in raid history. Vaelastrasz starts at 30% health and buffs the raid with Essence of the Red: 500 mana, 50 energy and 20 rage per second for 3 minutes. When it fades, so does your raid.
- Burning Adrenaline lands on a mana user every 15 seconds and on the top threat target every 45 seconds.
- The victim doubles damage, casts instantly, loses 5% max health per second and explodes for 4 to 6 thousand fire damage on death.
- Flame Breath and Cleave punish the front, Tail Sweep punishes the back.
- Fire Nova pulses raid wide fire damage the whole fight.
Face him toward the throne, melee on his right side behind the front shoulder, adrenaline victims run to the back wall and die usefully. Hunters use Feign Death every tank swap. Tanks and healers stack fire resistance, DPS drink Magic Resistance Potion or Greater Fire Protection Potion. Warriors spam Execute under 20% and quietly outthreat the tank, as tradition demands.
Broodlord Lashlayer
The fight starts in the Suppression Rooms, not at the boss. Once there, tank him in the last alcove, top right, backs to the gate.
- Knock Away hits the top threat target about every 30 seconds and halves their threat.
- Mortal Strike deals heavy damage and cuts healing by 50% for 5 seconds.
- Cleave deletes clothies standing in front.
- Blast Wave knocks melee back, so melee keep their backs to a wall.
DPS starts slow and stays slow. This is a threat fight disguised as a boss.
Firemaw
First drake and first cloak check, tanks only for now. Tank him at the Broodlord doorway so the raid can break line of sight.
- Flame Buffet stacks on everyone in line of sight, so players hide at 5 to 10 stacks and bandage.
- Shadow Flame is a frontal shadow cone that leaves a lethal DoT on anyone without Onyxia Scale Cloak.
- Wing Buffet knocks back and reduces threat about every 30 seconds, so an off tank eats it and the main tank taunts back.
- Thrash grants two extra swings at the tank.
Important: Onyxia Scale Cloak is not optional. From Firemaw it prevents the Shadow Flame DoT on tanks, and before Nefarian lands every single raider needs it, because his breath hits the entire room. No cloak, no raid spot. Onyxia’s Lair returns on the Forever roadmap, so start farming hides now.
Ebonroc
The taunt exam. Tank him in the corner by the ramp he patrols, three tanks in rotation.
- Shadow of Ebonroc marks his target for 8 seconds, and every melee hit on that target heals him for 25,000.
- The next tank taunts the moment the debuff appears, and the rotation never stops.
- Shadow Flame, Wing Buffet and Thrash work exactly like on Firemaw.
Flamegor
The easiest drake, provided Hunters are awake. Same corner as Ebonroc.
- Frenzy must be removed with Tranquilizing Shot immediately.
- A Frenzied Flamegor spams Fire Nova every couple of seconds on the whole raid.
- Shadow Flame and Wing Buffet still apply, and tanks still wear the cloak.
Chromaggus
The WoW Forever Chromaggus strategy is simple on paper: break line of sight on breaths, dispel everything, tranquilize Frenzy. He picks two of five breaths per lockout and alternates them every 30 seconds, so each one comes once a minute.
| Breath | Effect | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Incinerate | About 4,000 fire damage | Everyone except the main tank hides |
| Corrosive Acid | Nature DoT and minus 4,500 armor | Hide, heal the tank |
| Frost Burn | Frost damage, 80% slower melee | Hide |
| Ignite Flesh | Stacking fire DoT for 1 minute | Hide every time |
| Time Lapse | 6 second stun, half health, threat halved | Off tank and a few healers hide, off tank holds the boss |
| Affliction | Effect | Removal |
|---|---|---|
| Brood Affliction: Black | Fire damage taken doubled | Curse removal, top priority |
| Brood Affliction: Blue | Mana burn, slower casts and movement | Magic dispel |
| Brood Affliction: Green | Nature damage, healing taken halved | Poison cure |
| Brood Affliction: Red | Fire DoT, heals the boss if you die | Disease cure |
| Brood Affliction: Bronze | Periodic 4 second stun | Hourglass Sand only |
Five afflictions at once turn a player into a hostile Chromatic Drakonid. Afflictions ignore line of sight. Shimmer emotes flip his elemental weakness, so casters swap to the vulnerable school or a matching wand. He Frenzies every 10 to 15 seconds and hard enrages at 20%. Carry Restorative Potion and Powerful Anti-Venom so healers hate you slightly less.
Nefarian
Three phases and a personal insult for every class. Phase 1 is invulnerable Nefarian throwing shadow bolts, fears and mind controls while drakonids pour through both doors.
| Drakonid | Resists | Kill with |
|---|---|---|
| Chromatic Drakonid | High resistances | Melee, proper tank |
| Blue Drakonid | Frost, drains mana | Melee and Hunters, first priority |
| Black Drakonid | Shadow and fire | Melee and Hunters |
| Red Drakonid | Fire | Caster AoE |
| Bronze Drakonid | Arcane | Caster AoE |
| Green Drakonid | Nature, stuns | Last |
Two colors are active per week. After 42 kills Nefarian lands with a raid wide Shadow Flame, and phase 2 begins. He Cleaves the front, tail whips the rear, casts Bellowing Roar every 30 seconds with a 35 yard range, and puts Veil of Shadow on the nearest target for minus 75% healing. Tanks use Berserker Rage, Fear Ward and Tremor Totem.
Nefarian class calls in WoW Forever hit roughly every 30 seconds, and Forever interviews mention a strict addon policy, so memorize this table instead of trusting a boss mod to babysit you.
| Class | Call | Response |
|---|---|---|
| Druid | Involuntary Transformation into Cat Form | Step back and wait |
| Hunter | Ranged weapon breaks | Unequip before every call, re-equip after |
| Mage | Wild Polymorph on raiders | Priests and Paladins dispel, Mages Ice Block |
| Paladin | Siphon Blessing casts Improved Blessing of Protection on Nefarian | Stop attacking, wand for mana |
| Priest | Direct heals apply Corrupted Healing | Stop direct heals, use Renew and Power Word: Shield |
| Rogue | Teleported and rooted near Nefarian | Tank adjusts so Rogues avoid Cleave |
| Shaman | Corrupted Totems buff Nefarian | Kill totems immediately |
| Warlock | Two Corrupted Infernals each | Isolate Warlocks, Frost Nova and AoE |
| Warrior | Berserk: Berserker Stance, 30% more damage taken | Heal tanks hard, return to stance after |
At 20% every dead drakonid rises as a Bone Construct. Off tanks pick them up with Shield Wall and Challenging Shout, then the raid AoEs. They count as undead, so Holy Wrath and Stratholme Holy Water earn their bag space. Push him to 20% right after a Priest or Warrior call, not before one.
Loot Table
Blackwing Lair in WoW Forever loot leans on Tier 2 plus a pile of weapons that define the tier. Blizzard says Forever raid tiers will sit closer together in power, so this loot should age slower than it did in 2005. The WoW Forever BWL loot below follows the tested drop tables.
WoW Forever Tier 2 sets are assembled from six bosses here, plus helms from Onyxia and legs from Ragnaros. The three drakes share gloves and can drop none at all, which makes gloves the most hated piece of the set.
Trash drops are rare, random and fought over like the last healer on Vaelastrasz.
- Herald of Woe, Draconic Avenger and Draconic Maul are the two handed trash drops.
- Doom’s Edge and Essence Gatherer cover one hand and wand slots.
- Ringo’s Blizzard Boots and Boots of Pure Thought are the caster boots.
- Interlaced Shadow Jerkin drops from Death Talon Wyrmguards.
- Cloak of Draconic Might is the melee cloak nobody expects.
Nefarian drops one Head of Nefarian for Alliance and one Head of Nefarian for Horde. It starts The Lord of Blackrock for Alliance and The Lord of Blackrock for Horde, and the turn in buffs the capital city. The lair also feeds Thunderfury, Blessed Blade of the Windseeker, which needs Elementium Bars from lair materials, plus the Scepter chain steps Only One May Rise on Broodlord and Nefarius’s Corruption on Nefarian.
Lore
Nefarian, eldest son of Deathwing, rules the spire as Lord Victor Nefarius and experiments with the blood of every dragonflight to finish what his father failed: a chromatic flight. Chromaggus is the surviving proof, kept as a pet. Razorgore the Untamed guards the eggs, and the lair exists to crush Ragnaros below.
Vaelastrasz the Corrupt is the tragic part. The red dragon helped adventurers earn the Seal of Ascension, confronted Nefarian, was corrupted, and gave you a fraction of his power before turning on you. You thank him by killing him in under three minutes.
The Forever timeline sits in year 25 ADP, before Molten Core, inside what Metzen calls a time bubble. That makes Classic Plus Blackwing Lair a future problem in the story: Nefarian is still alive, still smug and still waiting. The WoW Forever Blackwing Lair story can diverge from the one you remember, and Blizzard has confirmed nothing yet.
Consumables and Preparation Checklist
- Every raider owns an Onyxia Scale Cloak before Nefarian night.
- Tanks and healers carry fire resistance for Vaelastrasz, and DPS carries Magic Resistance Potion.
- The raid pools Hourglass Sand and hands it to tanks, healers and Hunters first.
- Everyone brings Restorative Potion and Powerful Anti-Venom for Chromaggus.
- Hunters pack a spare ranged weapon for the Nefarian call they will forget.
- Alliance and Forever Horde Paladins stock Stratholme Holy Water for phase 3.
Do I need attunement to enter the lair?
No, but without it you walk through Upper Blackrock Spire after Rend, in raid groups of ten, every single time.
Which cloak is mandatory for the raid?
Onyxia Scale Cloak. Tanks need it from Firemaw, and every raider needs it before Nefarian lands in phase 2.
How many tanks does a progression raid need?
Four is the baseline, five for Vaelastrasz tank swaps, and three rotating tanks keep Ebonroc from healing himself.
What removes the bronze affliction on Chromaggus?
Only Hourglass Sand, which drops from trash in the lair. Give it to tanks, healers and Hunters first.
When does Nefarian phase 2 start?
After the raid kills 42 drakonids. He lands with a raid wide Shadow Flame, so check cloaks beforehand.
