WoW Forever Elemental Shaman Guide: Talents, Rotation, BiS

Play the WoW Forever Elemental Shaman guide version of this spec the boring way, because the boring way wins. Keep Flame Shock on the target, hard cast Lightning Bolt, spend Lava Burst the moment it is up, drop Searing Totem and never look at it again. Go deep Elemental, hit the spell hit cap before touching anything else, then crit, then spell damage.

Second thing, and it hurts: your patch 1.12 build is dead. Elemental Mastery, Lightning Mastery and Totemic Mastery were removed outright. Lava Burst, Lightning Overload, Elemental Alacrity, Elemental Reach and Improved Fire Nova moved into the empty seats. The WoW Forever release date is 4 November 2026, beta opens 17 September 2026, and raids unlock 9 December 2026, so treat every number here as pre release.

What Forever changed for Elemental

Forever is a separate permanent branch of the game rather than a patch bolted onto Classic, and the WoW Forever Classic Plus label the forums used for years is now an actual product with its own itemization pass. Talent trees keep the Classic shape, the same rows, and one point milestones at 11, 21 and 31, joined by a new milestone at 16 points. That fourth milestone is exactly why your saved build string does not import cleanly.

  • Elemental Mastery is gone, so Elemental now enters a fight with no burst cooldown and no emergency mana cooldown.
  • Lightning Mastery is gone and Elemental Alacrity replaces it, cutting up to 0.5 seconds from Lightning Bolt, Chain Lightning and Lava Burst.
  • Lava Burst is a new Elemental talent that deals 20 percent extra damage while your Flame Shock sits on the target.
  • Lightning Overload gives Lightning Bolt and Chain Lightning up to a 9 percent chance to fire a free half damage copy that generates no threat.
  • Elemental Reach adds up to 6 yards to your lightning spells and up to 16 yards to Flame Shock, replacing the removed Storm Reach.
  • Improved Fire Nova raises Fire Nova damage by up to 20 percent and removes up to 4 seconds from its cooldown.
  • Spell, melee and ranged hit are now a single combined stat, and critical strike is combined the same way.
  • Bonus healing now also grants one third as much bonus spell damage, which quietly turns healing pieces into real damage options.
  • Elemental Fury was a one point talent granting 100 percent bonus crit damage and is now a five rank talent starting at 20 percent, with the final rank unconfirmed.

Talents and best builds

All three World of Warcraft Forever Shaman talents trees kept their row count, so the arithmetic is familiar even when the contents are not. Elemental wants the full 31 point column for Lava Burst, then spends the remainder in Restoration for mana and threat, because Enhancement no longer offers a caster anything worth the travel.

BuildSplitWhat it actually buys
Raid DPS31 Elemental, 20 RestorationLava Burst, Lightning Overload, Elemental Alacrity, Elemental Fury, Tidal Mastery, Mindfulness, Natural Grace
PvP21 Elemental, 30 RestorationNature’s Swiftness, Elemental Reach, Earthbound, Tidal Mastery, survivability instead of a parse
Leveling31 Elemental, 20 EnhancementImproved Fire Nova, Magma Totem pulls, Ancestral Knowledge, Improved Ghost Wolf
  • Take Elemental Precision before crit talents, because a missed cast is worth exactly zero crit.
  • Natural Grace cuts spell threat by 15 percent and is the only reason a deep Elemental build survives a competent tank.
  • Mindfulness lets up to 50 percent of your mana regeneration continue while casting, which is now your mana plan since Elemental Mastery is gone.
  • Improved Lightning Shield is a leveling and PvP talent, not a raid talent, no matter how satisfying the orbs look.
  • Skip Elemental Reach rank two in raids unless your guild parks casters at the back of the room for fun.

Rotation and ability priority

The WoW Forever Shaman rotation for Elemental is a priority list with three entries and a lot of patience. Lava Burst changes the fight from pure Lightning Bolt spam into a short loop that punishes you for letting Flame Shock fall off, which is the most interaction this spec has ever been given.

  1. Pre pull with Lightning Shield, Mana Spring Totem and Grace of Air Totem, then drop Searing Totem as the tank engages.
  2. Open with Flame Shock so Lava Burst lands with its damage bonus already active.
  3. Cast Lava Burst on cooldown and never hold it for a theoretical better moment.
  4. Refresh Flame Shock as it expires and not a second earlier, because clipping the periodic damage is pure loss.
  5. Fill every remaining global cooldown with Lightning Bolt at maximum rank.
  6. Save Earth Shock for interrupts and keep it off your damage rotation entirely.

Multi target is where Elemental stops apologising. Chain Lightning becomes worth casting on three or more enemies, Magma Totem covers everything standing in the pile, and Improved Fire Nova turns a previously ignored button into a burst window. Threat arrives fast, so open the pack with the tank already committed.

  1. Drop Magma Totem first so it starts ticking before your first cast lands.
  2. Cast Chain Lightning on every cooldown while three or more targets remain alive.
  3. Use Fire Nova on tightly stacked groups once Improved Fire Nova is talented.
  4. Keep Flame Shock on the target the tank is actually holding.
  5. Fall back to Lightning Bolt the moment the pack drops below three targets.

Stat priority, hit cap and crit cap

WoW Forever stat priority for Elemental starts and ends with hit. Against a raid boss three levels above you, 16 percent is the number that removes every avoidable miss, and 1 percent stays permanently unavoidable no matter how much gear you pile on. Combined hit means mail pieces stamped with melee hit now feed your Lightning Bolt, which is the single largest gearing change in the game for this spec.

StatTargetWhy you care
Hit16 percent versus bossesRemoves avoidable misses and is now shared with melee and ranged hit
Critical strikeNo cap existsElemental Fury multiplies crit damage, so crit scales harder than raw damage
Spell damageAs much as fitsLightning Bolt carries a high coefficient and eats every point
IntellectSecondaryLarger mana pool and a small crit contribution
Mana per 5SituationalMatters more now that Elemental Mastery no longer refunds mana
SpiritIgnoreYou are casting, so the five second rule eats it alive

There is no crit cap for a caster and there never was. Nature and Fire spells cannot be dodged, parried or blocked, so the attack table that caps melee simply does not apply to you. Anyone quoting a crit cap for Elemental is describing a melee problem they read about on a Warrior forum.

Every dungeon drop in Forever has been re-examined, unique dungeon boss items are now blue quality, set bonuses were rewritten, and hundreds of new items were added. Any best in slot list published before beta ends is a guess wearing a confident hat, including this one. Items below are anchored only where the identifier was verified, and anything unverified is deliberately left unlinked rather than invented.

BiS gear phase by phase

The WoW Forever raids schedule decides your gearing calendar, and it is generous with waiting. Launch gives you five weeks of dungeons and nothing else, which means pre raid gear is not a formality this time, it is the entire first phase of your character.

PhaseContentOpens
Pre raidNine new dungeons, crafted gear, revamped quest rewards4 November 2026
Phase 1Hyjal Summit 20 player, Barrow Deeps 10 player, Onyxia’s Lair9 December 2026
Phase 2Two more raids, two more dungeons, new zone contentSpring 2027
Phase 3Further raids and dungeons plus a revamped iconic raidSummer 2027

Tier sets and a legendary reward are confirmed for both December raids, and no loot table has been published for either. Planning a phase one WoW Forever Elemental Shaman BiS list today means planning around item names that do not exist yet, so build the pre raid set properly and stop pretending you know what drops off a boss nobody has killed.

Alt BiS in Forever is genuinely different from Classic and most people will miss it. Bonus healing now carries one third as much bonus spell damage, so a healing piece with 66 healing quietly hands you 22 spell damage, and caster weapons now roll spell damage and healing together instead of being decorative sticks. Raid healers will fight you for those items, which is the point.

  • Take healing rings and trinkets when no damage version is available, because one third of something beats all of nothing.
  • Keep a second set with any hit you can find, since combined hit makes previously useless melee hit gear relevant.
  • Hold a nature resistance set only when your raid leader asks, not because a spreadsheet told you to hoard it.
  • Watch for trinkets with environment or creature type conditions, because Forever ties several new effects to zone families and enemy types.

Enchants, consumables and world buffs

Consumables are unchanged in structure and heavily changed in availability, because Forever begins before Molten Core and several classic staples are locked behind content that does not exist at launch. Cooked food was reworked so almost every meal now grants a small experience bonus alongside its stat bonus, which matters more while leveling than at 60.

ConsumableEffectNote
Greater Arcane ElixirSpell damageYour default battle elixir at 60
Mageblood PotionMana regenerationCovers the gap left by Elemental Mastery
Brilliant Wizard OilWeapon spell damageRequires Zandalar Tribe reputation and may not exist at Forever launch
Campsite objectsOne hour stat buffsHerbalist candle grants Intellect, tailor banner grants Spirit

World buffs follow the same rule. Songflower Serenade in Felwood and Slip’kik’s Savvy from Dire Maul tribute are both live from day one, Warchief’s Blessing comes from the Blackrock Spire chain, and Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer requires Onyxia, which means nobody has it until 9 December. Campsite buffs are variants of existing class buffs and do not stack with them, so sitting at a fire next to your own Herbalist is theatre.

  • Campsite buffs require you to sit and rest for a few moments before they apply.
  • Each player contributes one object to a campfire and those objects share a one hour cooldown.
  • A Cook can upgrade a campfire to hold five or ten objects, which makes Cooking a raid night profession again.
  • Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer gives 10 percent spell crit and is worth the flight to Winterspring once it exists.

Race, professions, macros and addons

Shaman is no longer Horde only, and the WoW Forever Dwarf Shaman is the reason. Mace Specialization now increases critical strike chance with all spells and abilities while a mace is equipped, which turns a melee racial into a flat caster crit bonus. Stoneform reduces physical damage taken instead of granting armor, which is a survivability upgrade nobody asked for and everybody will use.

The WoW Forever Skyborne Shaman is the Horde answer and it is quietly excellent for a caster. Wind Blessed passively increases haste by 1 percent, Elemental Insight increases damage against elemental enemies by 5 percent, Skysight raises run speed by 10 percent, and Walk on Air gives ten seconds of controlled slow fall. Troll remains the burst pick because Berserking still grants 10 percent haste on demand.

RaceStandout traitVerdict
TrollBerserking, 10 percent hasteBest Horde raid damage
SkyborneWind Blessed, 1 percent passive hasteBest passive throughput and mobility
OrcHardiness and Blood FuryPvP pick, stun reduction still decides duels
TaurenWar Stomp and extra healthSurvivability and a free interrupt
DwarfMace Specialization critOnly Alliance option worth optimising

Professions changed more than your talents did. Every profession gained over 600 new recipes, Blueprint recipes now drop from specific dungeon bosses, and each profession places a campsite object that buffs the group. Tailoring and Enchanting remain the safe caster pairing, Herbalism earns a slot purely for the Intellect candle, and Engineering is still the choice of people who enjoy explosions more than damage meters.

MacroWhat it does
/castsequence reset=combat Flame Shock, Lava BurstGuarantees the Flame Shock bonus lands before Lava Burst
/cast [mod:shift] Magma Totem; Searing TotemOne key for single target and pack damage
/cast [target=focus] Earth ShockInterrupts the caster you assigned without losing your target
/cast Nature’s Swiftness
/cast Healing Wave
Instant emergency heal for PvP and bad raid nights
/cancelaura Ghost WolfDrops wolf form instantly instead of fighting the toggle
  • A totem timer addon is mandatory because Mana Spring Totem and Grace of Air Totem expire silently and nobody will tell you.
  • A cast bar addon with latency display saves more damage per hour than any single talent point.
  • A damage meter is for diagnosing your Flame Shock uptime, not for posting screenshots in guild chat.
  • A buff tracker matters more in Forever because campsite buffs run on one hour timers you will forget.
  • Tremor Totem, Grounding Totem, Earthbind Totem and Strength of Earth Totem deserve their own keybinds, since nobody else in your raid brings them.

Finally, the Legacy System gives every character up to 16 spendable points across Professions, Adventure and Resourcefulness, with up to 65 points earnable at launch. Reagent Economy sits deep in Resourcefulness and can remove reagent requirements from class abilities, which for a Shaman is the difference between carrying ankhs forever and not. Spend accordingly, because the points are account wide and the regret is not.
