WoW Forever Molten Core Attunement: Attunement to the Core Guide
Short version for people who stop reading here. Attunement to the Core is a single quest: hit level 55, take it from Lothos Riftwaker at the bottom of Blackrock Mountain, loot the Core Fragment beside the Molten Core portal at the far end of Blackrock Depths, and hand it back. The reward is a permanent teleport into the raid. That is the whole WoW Forever Molten Core attunement, and people still find ways to wipe on it.
Forever keeps the original Azeroth, the level 60 cap and a story set before the Firelord falls, so the old chain, the old drop spot and the old skips still win. It is the project fans called Classic+ before BlizzCon 2026, it launches November 4, 2026, and any WoW Classic Plus MC attunement guide you remember applies here with one fewer excuse. Numbers below come from Classic Anniversary data.

Where the Chain Starts
The WoW Forever Lothos Riftwaker location has not changed since 2005. Enter Blackrock Mountain, cross the chain to the central spire, then walk down the second chain toward Blackrock Depths. He waits in a small chamber at the entrance of the Grinding Quarry, next to a window that appears to lead nowhere.
Players report him around 47, 68 on the Blackrock Mountain map. The map is layered and the numbers drift by a point, so trust the second chain more than your addon. He is a blood elf standing in a stone room. You will not miss him unless you try.
| Landmark | What to do |
|---|---|
| Mountain entrance | Come in from Searing Gorge or Burning Steppes |
| First chain | Cross to the central spire |
| Second chain | Walk down toward the dungeon door |
| Stone chamber | Talk to Lothos Riftwaker and accept the quest |
Prerequisites
- You need level 55 to accept the quest, and anything under 58 turns the back half of Blackrock Depths into a repair bill.
- No reputation, no prior attunement and no other dungeon is required.
- The Shadowforge Key is optional but saves a large chunk of the run by opening the Shadowforge gates for classes that cannot pick locks.
- The key comes from Dark Iron Legacy, offered by Franclorn Forgewright, a ghost on his tomb in the center of the mountain who only talks to dead players.
- The follow-up Dark Iron Legacy sends you to kill Fineous Darkvire, recover Ironfel and place it on the statue at the Shrine of Thaurissan, which opens the key compartment.
- Soloists should pack Lesser Invisibility Potion, Greater Fire Protection Potion and Swim Speed Potion before leaving town.
Grab the WoW Forever Shadowforge Key on the same trip if you plan to run the dungeon more than once. Dying to reach Franclorn is part of the process, so take off your gear first and let the durability loss hit nothing.
Full Step by Step Chain
One quest, one drop, one turn-in. The route below is the proven stealth path from the entrance to the Core Fragment; groups follow the same line and simply kill what solo players avoid.
- Accept Attunement to the Core from Lothos Riftwaker in the chamber below the second chain.
- Enter Blackrock Depths in a normal 5-player party, because dungeon quest objectives do not progress in raid groups.
- Open the Shadowforge Gate on your left, bypass the patrolling elemental, open the second gate on your right and then the East Garrison Door on your left.
- Walk up the ramp past two patrolling fireguards, turn left and follow the hall to the window with cannons in front of it.
- Jump through that window, turn right through the open door and keep to the center of the corridor so only the last pair of elementals notices you.
- Turn left and walk off the ledge onto the bridge behind the Shadowforge Door, skirting the patrol along the right edge.
- Stop before the last pair of elementals and wait until Lord Incendius circles away from you on his lap around the Black Anvil.
- Run in, drop immediately left into the lava and climb onto the ledge on your left.
- Follow the ledge north past the first island until it ends and you can see a second island holding four Fireguard Destroyers.
- Swim to the near edge of that island outside their aggro range and heal up.
- Wait for the closest Fireguard to drift right, re-enter the lava on the left and hug the left wall east under the bridge to a ramp.
- Climb out, hug the right wall tightly and get past the three elementals at the start of the bridge and the three at the far end.
- Loot the Core Fragment from the stalagmite on the left next to the Molten Core entrance.
- Return to Lothos Riftwaker and turn in the quest to receive Attunement to the Core.
The WoW Forever Core Fragment location is the only part of this quest that is not negotiable: the stalagmite left of the portal, at the end of the Molten Bridge. Every player in the party loots their own copy, so nobody gets to sit at the entrance and wait.
Attunement to the Core is a shortcut, not a gate. Without it you can still walk into Molten Core through the portal at the end of Blackrock Depths. You just get to clear the dungeon every raid night while attuned players chat with an elf and skip it. Also, Lothos Riftwaker talks to ghosts, so you can accept or turn in the quest while dead.
Routes, Group Size and What You Kill
| Route | Group | What you kill | Risk |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full clear to Emperor Dagran Thaurissan | 5 players, level 55 to 60 | Everything up to the Emperor, plus the bridge elementals | Low, slow |
| Lava run | 5 players at 58 to 60 with a healer | Bridge elementals only, ideally | Lava damage |
| Stealth solo | 1 player | Nothing, if done correctly | High |
A WoW Forever BRD lava run starts by jumping off the platform Lord Incendius patrols. Hug the left side of the cavern where a thin strip of land keeps you out of the lava, then swim the final stretch to the bridge. A healer or fire protection consumables decide whether that swim ends at the fragment or at the graveyard.
A classic balanced lineup for the full clear is a warrior tank, a paladin or priest healer and three damage dealers. Everyone should be between 55 and 60, and anyone below that is emotional baggage with a hearthstone.
Skips, Shortcuts and Class Workarounds
A solo MC attunement WoW Forever run is realistic for most classes if you respect patrol timers. The table lists what actually gets people to the fragment alive.
| Class or profession | Tool | How it helps |
|---|---|---|
| Rogue | Stealth, Vanish, Lockpicking | Opens gates without a key and walks past every pack |
| Mage | Fire Ward, Blink | Crosses the lava with little or no potion use |
| Priest | Levitate, Power Word: Shield | Reaches the ledge after Incendius without touching lava |
| Druid | Bear Form, Regrowth, Rejuvenation | Swims through lava on heals over time |
| Hunter | Feign Death, Aspect of the Cheetah | Drops aggro after running through elementals |
| Night elf | Shadowmeld | Lets patrols pass on the bridge |
| Engineer | Gnomish Cloaking Device | Short invisibility for the worst patrol |
| Anyone | Lesser Invisibility Potion, Greater Fire Protection Potion, Swim Speed Potion | Invisibility, fire absorption and faster lava swims |
- You can turn in the quest as a ghost, so dying in the lava after looting the Core Fragment and running back to Lothos Riftwaker is faster than walking out.
- You can also group with an attuned friend, convert to a raid, step into Molten Core and immediately exit, which drops you right next to Lothos Riftwaker.
- Jumping out of the window beside him is the original 2005 method and still works for the attuned, though Blizzard added the teleport because some players landed in lava instead.
- Aggro from bridge packs resets once you jump off a ledge or into the lava, which is the entire trick behind most solo routes.
What It Unlocks
| Unlock | Detail |
|---|---|
| Teleport | Talk to Lothos Riftwaker to port directly into Molten Core, alive or dead |
| BRD skip | No weekly clear of Blackrock Depths before raid |
| Rune dousing | Aqual Quintessence from Duke Hydraxis douses the runes that summon Majordomo Executus |
| Final boss | Ragnaros waits at the end of the raid |
If you are wondering how to enter Molten Core in WoW Forever without the attunement, the answer is the portal at the end of Blackrock Depths, reached the long way. With it, the Molten Core teleport WoW Forever is one gossip option. The raid itself still expects a raid group at the door.
Lore
Ragnaros was bound by the Old Gods, banished by the titan watchers and dragged back into Azeroth by Sorcerer-Thane Thaurissan during the War of the Three Hammers. The summoning shattered the region into Searing Gorge and Burning Steppes, and the Dark Iron nation has served the Firelord ever since.
Franclorn Forgewright designed the city beneath the mountain and watched Ragnaros rot his people from the inside, which is why his ghost now hands out keys to strangers. Lothos Riftwaker is simpler: a blood elf who sees rifts nobody else can and considers mortals too dim to notice the one two paces from his feet. Forever sets its story in the first year of World of Warcraft, before the events of Molten Core, so the Firelord is very much at home.
What level do you need for Attunement to the Core in WoW Forever?
Level 55 to accept it from Lothos Riftwaker, though 58 to 60 makes the Blackrock Depths route far less painful.
Where is the Core Fragment located?
On a stalagmite left of the Molten Core portal at the far end of the bridge deep inside Blackrock Depths.
Can you solo the Molten Core attunement?
Yes. Rogues have it easiest with Stealth and Vanish, others need invisibility and fire protection potions plus good timing.
Is the attunement required to enter Molten Core?
No. You can walk in through the Blackrock Depths portal, but attunement lets Lothos teleport you straight into the raid.
Can you turn in Attunement to the Core while dead?
Yes. Lothos Riftwaker talks to ghosts, so dying in the lava and running back to him is a legitimate shortcut.
