WoW Forever Onyxia Attunement: Drakefire Amulet Guide

The WoW Forever Onyxia attunement is one item: the Drakefire Amulet, carried in the bags of every raider who wants through the lair entrance. Alliance starts with Helendis Riverhorn at Morgan’s Vigil in Burning Steppes (/way 85.6 69.0). Horde starts with Warlord Goretooth in Kargath, Badlands (/way 5.8 47.6). Both roads end with General Drakkisath dead in Upper Blackrock Spire.

Budget several evenings, two to four dungeon groups and one escort that walks slower than your guild’s loot council. The chain has 16 quests for Alliance and 14 for Horde, and none of them can be bought, boosted or skipped entirely.

Onyxia in Forever: Status Check

The World of Warcraft Forever Onyxia’s Lair return is a 40-player raid on the BlizzCon roadmap, next to Barrow Deeps and Hyjal Summit. Blizzard’s written What’s Next post leaves Onyxia out, and boss lists, loot and attunements are still unpublished.

Forever is set in Year One, after Forsaken Kingdom and before Molten Core, which means Katrana Prestor is still whispering in Bolvar’s ear. The original chain fits that timeline perfectly, so this guide runs on it: old chains, old drop spots, old skips. New zones get new toys. Old dragons keep old habits.

The WoW Forever Onyxia release date on the roadmap is the December 9, 2026 raid wave, five weeks after the November 4 launch. Five weeks is exactly enough time to finish this chain if you start on day one and do not stop to admire the Skyborne.

Prerequisites Before You Start

• Alliance can accept the first quest at level 48 but needs level 52 to finish the chain.
• Horde quests are level 60 content from the first step, so arrive at the cap.
• No reputation is required at any point for either faction.
• Alliance needs a group that can reach deep Blackrock Depths, preferably with a Shadowforge Key holder.
• Both factions need someone carrying a Seal of Ascension to open Upper Blackrock Spire.
• Every raider needs a personal Drakefire Amulet in the bags, because a copy in the bank or on the raid leader opens nothing.

Where the Chain Starts

Here is how to get Drakefire Amulet in WoW Forever from the first click: find the right quest giver for your faction and accept everything they hand you, including the quests that look like dead ends.

Alliance Chain Step by Step

The WoW Forever Onyxia attunement Alliance route drags you through Burning Steppes, Redridge Mountains, Stormwind City, Blackrock Depths, Winterspring and Upper Blackrock Spire. It is mostly running errands for politicians, which is fitting, since one of them is the dragon.

1. Accept Dragonkin Menace from Helendis Riverhorn and kill 15 Black Broodlings, 10 Black Dragonspawn, 4 Black Wyrmkin and 1 Black Drake along the eastern edge of Burning Steppes.
2. Take The True Masters and deliver Helendis Riverhorn’s Letter to Magistrate Solomon in the Lakeshire town hall at /way 30.0 44.2.
3. Finish The True Masters by bringing Solomon’s Plea to Bolvar to Highlord Bolvar Fordragon in Stormwind Keep at /way 78 18.
4. Finish The True Masters by speaking to Lady Katrana Prestor beside Bolvar at /way 78.0 17.8, then to Bolvar again.
5. Finish The True Masters by returning Bolvar’s Decree to Magistrate Solomon.
6. Finish The True Masters by reporting to Marshal Maxwell at Morgan’s Vigil at /way 84.6 68.8.
7. Finish The True Masters by finding Ragged John in the cave north of the Ruins of Thaurissan at /way 65.0 23.6 and reporting back to Maxwell.
8. Take Marshal Windsor and find Marshal Windsor in his cell on the right side of the Blackrock Depths prison block.
9. Take Abandoned Hope back to Maxwell, which looks like the end of the chain and is not.
10. Loot A Crumpled Up Note, a random drop in and around Blackrock Depths, and start A Crumpled Up Note with Windsor in his cell.
11. Take A Shred of Hope and kill General Angerforge and Golem Lord Argelmach for both copies of Marshal Windsor’s Lost Information.
12. Start Jail Break!, escort Windsor through the prison ambushes and turn in to Maxwell.
13. Take Stormwind Rendezvous and talk to Squire Rowe at the Stormwind gates at /way 70.4 85.6 to summon Reginald Windsor.
14. Walk The Great Masquerade to the keep, watch Prestor turn into Onyxia, kill her elite guards and report to Bolvar.
15. Take The Dragon’s Eye and bring the Fragment of the Dragon’s Eye to Haleh at /way 54.6 51.2.
16. Take Drakefire Amulet, kill General Drakkisath for Blood of the Black Dragon Champion and return to Haleh for the amulet.

Horde Chain Step by Step

The WoW Forever Onyxia attunement Horde route is shorter on paper and longer on the map: Badlands, Blackrock Spire twice, Orgrimmar, Desolace, Western Plaguelands, Dustwallow Marsh, Tanaris, Winterspring, Swamp of Sorrows and Wetlands. Pack hearthstones and resentment.

1. Accept Warlord’s Command, kill Highlord Omokk, War Master Voone and Overlord Wyrmthalak in Lower Blackrock Spire, and loot Important Blackrock Documents behind one of them.
2. Take Eitrigg’s Wisdom, speak to Eitrigg in the Valley of Wisdom at /way 34.4 38.4, then turn in to Thrall at /way 32.0 37.8.
3. Take For The Horde!, kill Warchief Rend Blackhand in Upper Blackrock Spire and bring the Head of Rend Blackhand to Thrall.
4. Listen to Thrall’s story in What the Wind Carries and turn it in on the spot.
5. Take The Champion of the Horde and find Rexxar on his patrol from the Stonetalon border south through Desolace.
6. Take The Testament of Rexxar with Rexxar’s Testament to Myranda the Hag near Uther’s Tomb at /way 50.8 77.8.
7. Complete Oculus Illusions with 20 Black Dragonspawn Eye from black dragonkin in Upper Blackrock Spire.
8. Take Emberstrife, enter his den in southern Dustwallow Marsh, use the Amulet of Draconic Subversion and talk to Emberstrife at /way 56.8 87.4.
9. Kill Chronalis outside the Caverns of Time at /way 64.6 50.2 for The Test of Skulls, Chronalis.
10. Kill Scryer inside Mazthoril at /way 53.2 56.0 for The Test of Skulls, Scryer.
11. Kill Somnus in southeastern Swamp of Sorrows near /way 80 70 for The Test of Skulls, Somnus.
12. Turn in all three skulls, then kill Axtroz at Grim Batol near /way 85 49 for The Test of Skulls, Axtroz.
13. Take Ascension… and bring the Dull Drakefire Amulet to Rexxar, not to Drakkisath, whatever Emberstrife suggests.
14. Take Blood of the Black Dragon Champion, kill General Drakkisath for Blood of the Black Dragon Champion and return it to Rexxar for the Drakefire Amulet.

The Drakefire Amulet works only from your bags. Not the bank, not the mailbox, not your raid leader’s inventory. Forty raiders means forty amulets, and the one who left it on an alt will be standing outside the lair explaining why.

Skips, Shortcuts and Workarounds

Every WoW Forever Onyxia attunement skip below is an old trick. Blizzard added a thousand quests to Forever and none of them made Mazthoril less annoying.

• Farm A Crumpled Up Note solo from the non-elite slaves outside Blackrock Depths instead of clearing the instance for it.
• A rogue with high Lockpicking or an engineer with a Seaforium charge opens the Shadowforge gates, but bring a Shadowforge Key holder anyway for the lock itself.
• Skip the elite Mazthoril cave to Haleh by jumping the ravine on a fast mount or with rogue Sprint.
• Stealth down or corpse run through Mazthoril if the jump keeps killing you, which it will.
• Wait up to ten minutes if Reginald Windsor is busy with another group, because he returns on his own.
• Let the Stormwind guards tank the elite dragonkin in The Great Masquerade while you do the damage.
• Kill the three Lower Blackrock Spire bosses once for both Warlord’s Command and the Seal of Ascension gemstones.
• Combine Emberstrife with the Seal of Ascension forging, since both happen at the same elite dragon.
• Run all three Test of Skulls dragons with one raid group, because the quests allow it.
• Find Rexxar by running north from Feralas and asking Desolace general chat, instead of chasing his tail from the north.

Upper Blackrock Spire Key

Both chains end in Upper Blackrock Spire, and the WoW Forever UBRS key is still the Seal of Ascension ring. One holder per group opens the door.

• Loot an Unadorned Seal of Ascension from trash in Lower Blackrock Spire or the orcs outside it.
• Show it to Vaelan inside Lower Blackrock Spire and accept Seal of Ascension.
• Collect the Gemstones of Spirestone, Smolderthorn and Bloodaxe from Omokk, Voone and Wyrmthalak, knowing they do not drop every run.
• Accept Seal of Ascension, beat Emberstrife to low health in the Wyrmbog, drop the unforged seal and use the orb on him.
• Return the forged seal to Vaelan for the Seal of Ascension and keep it forever, like everything else in this game.

The Drakefire Amulet in WoW Forever is a raid key first and a fire resistance neck piece second. The chain itself opens several side benefits along the way.

Lore

Onyxia, daughter of Deathwing, sits in Stormwind Keep as Lady Katrana Prestor, steering a boy king’s regent and the House of Nobles. Marshal Windsor learns the truth, lands in a Blackrock Depths cell, and spends the Alliance chain proving it with your help.

The Great Masquerade ends with Onyxia unmasked in her own throne room and Windsor paying for the reveal with his life. The Horde never gets a court drama. Thrall sends you to Rexxar, and Rexxar teaches you to walk among black dragons wearing their own face.

General Drakkisath is the champion of the black flight in Blackrock Spire, and his blood is what fuels the amulet. In Forever’s Year One bubble, this is a classic plus Onyxia attunement in the literal sense: same betrayal, same blood, now with a roadmap.
