WoW Forever Onyxia’s Lair Guide: Entrance, Tactics, Loot

This WoW Forever Onyxia guide in one breath: Onyxia’s Lair opens in World of Warcraft Forever on December 9 as a 40-player raid with one boss, Onyxia. Every raider needs a Drakefire Amulet in their bags, the entrance sits in the Wyrmbog of Dustwallow Marsh, and the kill comes down to three phases: tank her against the north wall, dodge Deep Breath at 65 percent, survive the fear and lava at 40 percent. She drops two Tier 2 helms per kill and a head worth parading through your capital.

Forever launches November 4, but its three raids wait until December 9, which gives the average guild five weeks to level, attune and argue about loot council. Anyone typing WoW Forever raids release date into a search bar gets the same answer: Barrow Deeps for 10, Hyjal Summit for 20, and Onyxia for the full 40. Her raid Legacy Challenge lists exactly one boss, so no surprise second dragon is coming to save your parse.

Two Forever rules change how you prepare. Item stats stay hidden until an item drops on your realm, and there is no dungeon journal at first. The mechanics below follow the original encounter, and the Wowhead links point to the Classic database, because Forever keeps its own secrets until someone bleeds for them.

Entrance Location and Coordinates

The WoW Forever Onyxia’s Lair location is the southern Wyrmbog, a swamp that exists mainly to hide the cave from people who refuse to install a coordinates addon. The entrance is a cave carved like a dragon’s open maw, with a winding lava tunnel leading to the instance portal.

PointCoordinatesNote
Wyrmbog cave mouthDustwallow Marsh /way 52 76Walk in, follow the tunnel down

Alliance flight pathTheramore IsleRide southwest across the marsh
Horde flight pathBrackenwall VillageRide south along the road into the Wyrmbog
Emberstrife’s Den/way 56.8 87.4Horde attunement stop, farther south

Summon at the cave mouth, not inside the tunnel. The swamp is full of elite black dragonkin, and losing your healers to trash before the raid even zones in is a special kind of humiliation.

Attunement: Getting the Drakefire Amulet

The WoW Forever Onyxia attunement is personal, faction specific and long. Each player needs their own Drakefire Amulet in the bags, not the bank, and the raid leader’s copy does not open the door for anyone else. Both chains end with killing General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire for the Blood of the Black Dragon Champion.

Alliance chain, starting at Morgan’s Vigil:

  1. Accept Dragonkin Menace from Helendis Riverhorn in Burning Steppes at /way 85.6 69.0 and kill black dragonkin along the eastern edge of the zone.
  2. Run the five-part The True Masters errand through Magistrate Solomon in Redridge Mountains, Highlord Bolvar Fordragon and Lady Katrana Prestor in Stormwind City, then Marshal Maxwell and Ragged John back in Burning Steppes.
  3. Take Marshal Windsor into Blackrock Depths and hear the bad news in Abandoned Hope.
  4. Loot A Crumpled Up Note from slaves outside or mobs inside the dungeon, which starts A Crumpled Up Note.
  5. Complete A Shred of Hope by killing General Angerforge and Golem Lord Argelmach for the two pieces of lost information.
  6. Survive the Jail Break! escort, then report to Marshal Maxwell.
  7. Summon Reginald Windsor through Squire Rowe at the Stormwind gates for Stormwind Rendezvous.
  8. March to the keep for The Great Masquerade, where Katrana Prestor reveals herself and leaves elite dragonkin behind for you to clean up.
  9. Carry The Dragon’s Eye to Haleh in Winterspring at /way 54.6 51.2, reached through the Mazthoril cave or by skipping it on a fast mount.
  10. Finish Drakefire Amulet by killing Drakkisath and returning the blood to Haleh.

Horde chain, starting at Kargath:

  1. Take Warlord’s Command from Warlord Goretooth and kill Highlord Omokk, War Master Voone and Overlord Wyrmthalak in Lower Blackrock Spire.
  2. Deliver Eitrigg’s Wisdom to Eitrigg and Thrall in Orgrimmar.
  3. Kill Warchief Rend Blackhand for For The Horde!, which also hands the whole city Warchief’s Blessing.
  4. Listen to Thrall in What the Wind Carries, then hunt the wandering Rexxar in Desolace for The Champion of the Horde.
  5. Deliver The Testament of Rexxar to Myranda the Hag in Western Plaguelands at /way 50.8 77.8.
  6. Collect 20 Black Dragonspawn Eye in Upper Blackrock Spire for Oculus Illusions.
  7. Wear the Amulet of Draconic Subversion disguise and speak to Emberstrife for Emberstrife.
  8. Kill Chronalis in Tanaris, Scryer in Winterspring and Somnus in the Swamp of Sorrows for The Test of Skulls, Chronalis, The Test of Skulls, Scryer and The Test of Skulls, Somnus.
  9. Kill Axtroz near Grim Batol in the Wetlands for The Test of Skulls, Axtroz.
  10. Return to Rexxar with Ascension… and finish Blood of the Black Dragon Champion by bringing him Drakkisath’s blood.

The Horde chain needs four elite dragon kills, so recruit a raid group once and clear all skull quests in one evening instead of begging trade chat four separate times.

Best Raid Composition

The WoW Forever raid comp for Onyxia is built around three problems: a boss immune to taunt, whelps pouring out of the egg caves, and a fear that scatters everyone into lava. She is also immune to fire, so a Fire Mage brings exactly nothing to this raid except sadness.

RoleCountJob
Main tank1Holds her on the north wall in Phases 1 and 3
Off tanks2One builds threat as fear backup, one gathers whelps at the egg caves
Healers11 to 12Tank rotation plus raid healing through Fireball and lava
Mages (Frost)5 to 6Area damage on whelp packs
Warlocks3 to 4Damage on the boss, backup area damage on whelps
Hunters4 to 5Ranged damage in the air, Feign Death to drop threat
Rogues and melee Warriors10Controlled damage on the ground, Vanish to reset threat
  • Keep Fear Ward and Tremor Totem on the main tank rotation for Phase 3.
  • Give every tank Berserker Rage timing duties so one of them is always unfeared.
  • Put at least one area damage caster and one healer in each of the two whelp groups.
  • Check your realm’s race and class combinations before planning, because Forever reshuffled who can play what.

Preparation Checklist

  • Every raider carries at least two Greater Fire Protection Potion for Fireballs and lava.
  • Tanks stack fire resistance, while everyone else takes only enough to avoid dying to a single Flame Breath splash.
  • Casters enter with full mana and use wands in Phase 1 to stay below the tank’s threat.
  • Use the built-in damage meter and a boss warning addon, since nobody can dodge a Deep Breath they did not notice.
  • Drop campsite buffs outside the cave mouth before zoning in, because Forever profession buffs are cheaper than a wipe.

Route and Trash

The route is short and linear: portal, a tunnel with four patrolling Onyxian Warders, then the main chamber with Onyxia asleep in the middle and egg tunnels on the east and west sides. Pull one Warder at a time and keep melee out until it casts its first Fire Nova.

MobAbilityWhat to do
Onyxian WarderFire NovaOnly the tank stands in range, melee waits for the first cast
Onyxian WarderFlame LashDispel the stacking magic debuff
Onyxian WarderPierce ArmorShort armor loss on the tank, healers watch the swing damage
Onyxian WarderCleaveNobody except the tank stands in front
Onyxian WhelpSwarmMages and off tank gather and kill them fast

Warders respawn in the tunnel the moment Onyxia is engaged and despawn when she dies or the raid wipes. Hiding in that tunnel gets you eaten by trash, and running too far gets you teleported straight back to her.

Onyxia Abilities

The whole WoW Forever Onyxia strategy fits into one table. Learn it, because she is immune to taunt, and a dead main tank stays a dead main tank for the rest of the attempt.

AbilityPhaseEffectCounter
Flame Breath1 and 3Wide fire cone in frontOnly the tank faces her
Wing Buffet1 and 3Frontal knockbackTank with the back against the north wall
Knock Away1 and 3Knocks back the tank and cuts its threat by a quarterDamage dealers stay well below tank threat
Cleave1 and 3Heavy physical hit in frontRaid stays on her sides
Tail Sweep1 and 3Knocks everyone behind her sidewaysNever stand behind her
Fireball2Hits a target and splashes nearby playersSpread at least 8 yards apart
Breath (Deep Breath)2Fire rolls across the room from her positionRun to the safe sides
Onyxian Whelp spawns2 and 3Big wave at takeoff, smaller waves laterWhelp groups and area damage
Bellowing Roar3Raid-wide fear, followed by lava eruptions from the floor cracksFear Ward, Tremor Totem, Berserker Rage

Phase 1: 100 to 65 Percent

The main tank runs past Onyxia and drags her to the north wall so her face points at stone and her tail points at the entrance. Everyone else enters two to three seconds later and splits into the northeast and northwest corners: melee at her shoulders, ranged and healers along the wall, whelp groups farthest south.

  • Nobody except the main tank touches her for the first minute or the first percent of her health.
  • Damage dealers then work at half to three quarters of their output and dump threat whenever possible.
  • Save every cooldown for 65 percent, because Phase 1 is a patience test that most pickup raids fail.

Phase 2: Deep Breath and Whelps

At 65 percent she walks south and takes flight. Now the brakes come off, since the faster she drops to 40 percent, the fewer chances she gets to redecorate the floor with your raid.

The first priority is the whelp wave that erupts from both egg caves the moment she lifts off. Off tank at the cave entrance, mages behind, everyone helps for ten seconds, then back to the dragon. After that, spread 8 yards apart and watch her position, because every WoW Forever Deep Breath starts from directly beneath her and rolls to the opposite wall.

When the emote says Onyxia takes in a deep breath, stop casting and run. If she hovers in a corner, the two adjacent corners are safe. If she hovers on a side, the two adjacent sides are safe. Standing in the middle means taking five or six hits of fire, and no healer in Azeroth is paid enough to fix that.

The main tank keeps building threat on whelps and applies armor debuffs on Onyxia as she comes down. Casters stop at around 42 percent, and hunters and rogues keep firing until she lands, then reset threat.

Phase 3: 40 to 0 Percent

She lands near a random point and fears within seconds. Move away from the egg caves before that happens, because one feared idiot inside an egg pit hatches twenty whelps and ends the evening.

  • Everyone returns to Phase 1 positions while the tank drags her back to the north wall.
  • Ranged damage dealers can stand near the center of the room, where fewer lava cracks erupt.
  • Players who resist the fear run to the tank spot, because she attacks unfeared targets first.
  • Nobody except tanks breaks fear, so skip the racial and the PvP trinket.
  • Damage ramps up gradually and goes all out around 10 percent.

Lava damage is unavoidable attrition. Slow, controlled damage feels boring, but a Flame Breath through the healer corner feels considerably worse.

Loot Table

The classic WoW Forever Onyxia loot baseline is two Tier 2 helms per kill, the Head of Onyxia, an Onyxia Hide Backpack, two more epics from the table below, sacks like the Green Sack of Gems, and random world drop blues. Forever hides stats until the first drop on your realm, so treat these tables as the expected pool, not a signed contract.

Every WoW Forever Tier 2 helm comes from this lair, which is why your guild will clear it weekly long after it stops being hard.

A skinner with 315 skill can skin her corpse for Scale of Onyxia, the material behind the cloak your raid will need against Nefarian later. Bring one.

Head of Onyxia and Related Quests

The bow chain also needs Molten Core, which Forever has not opened yet. Enjoy staring at that sinew in your bank.

Lore

WoW Forever Onyxia lore is set in the first year after the Third War, inside Blizzard’s own time bubble, before Molten Core and with Onyxia very much alive. She is the daughter of Deathwing and the sister of Nefarian, and she prefers manipulation to brute force.

In Stormwind she rules from the shadows as Lady Katrana Prestor, bending the court and Highlord Bolvar with the enchanted Dragon’s Eye. Marshal Windsor’s escape from Blackrock Depths ends in her unmasking, and the shattered pendant becomes the Drakefire Amulet that breaks the wards of her lair. The Horde reaches the same key through Rexxar, a hag’s disguise and a very gullible Emberstrife.

Her lair beneath the Wyrmbog hides her next brood in the egg caves. Threaten those eggs and you meet the broodmother at her angriest, which, conveniently, is the only version of her you will ever fight.
