WoW Forever Prison Cell Key Guide: Gerstahn, Cells, Jail Break
The WoW Forever Prison Cell Key drops from High Interrogator Gerstahn in the Detention Block of Blackrock Depths. It drops on every kill, one copy per kill, bind on pickup, and it stays with you after the run. It opens the cells of Marshal Windsor, Kharan Mighthammer and Commander Gor’shak, which makes it mandatory for the Alliance Onyxia chain and both Moira rescue chains.
No quest gives the key. You kill one interrogator and loot it. Rogues with 250 Lockpicking, Blacksmiths with an Arcanite Skeleton Key and Engineers with a Large Seaforium Charge open the same doors without it. Everything else on this page is about what waits behind those doors, and none of it is pleasant.
Prison Cell Key at a glance
The World of Warcraft Forever Prison Cell Key is not an attunement by itself. It is a doorstop that every attunement in the Detention Block trips over.
| Field | Value |
|---|---|
| Item | Prison Cell Key |
| Source | High Interrogator Gerstahn, Detention Block, Blackrock Depths |
| Drop | Guaranteed, one per kill, bind on pickup, unique |
| Storage | Keyring in the original client baseline, not a bag slot |
| Opens | Cells of Marshal Windsor, Kharan Mighthammer, Commander Gor’shak, and the Supply Room door |
| Faction | Both, Horde can loot it too |
| Alternatives | 250 Lockpicking, Arcanite Skeleton Key, Large Seaforium Charge |
The Forever situation
Forever launches November 4, 2026, realmless, capped at 60, and set in the first year of the original timeline, before Molten Core. That makes Lady Prestor, Windsor and the kidnapped princess current events instead of history lessons.
Blizzard has not published attunement rules for Forever raids. Onyxia’s Lair 40 appears on the BlizzCon on-stage roadmap, not in the written recap. The WoW Forever Onyxia attunement is therefore run on the proven baseline: same NPCs, same drops, same escort. If Blizzard edits a step, the step changes here. The Detention Block will not get nicer.
Prerequisites before you start
| Chain | Level | Reputation | Items | Dungeons |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Alliance Onyxia chain | 48 to accept, 54 to 58 for the BRD steps | None | Prison Cell Key, Shadowforge Key | Blackrock Depths two or more runs, Upper Blackrock Spire |
| Alliance Kharan chain | 50 for the cell step, 59 for the Emperor | None | Prison Cell Key, Shadowforge Key | Blackrock Depths full clear to the Emperor |
| Horde Gor’shak chain | 48, Disharmony of Flame completed | None | Prison Cell Key | Blackrock Depths full clear to the Emperor |
The Shadowforge Key comes from Dark Iron Legacy, offered by the ghost of Franclorn Forgewright to dead players only. You need it to reach General Angerforge and Golem Lord Argelmach, so get it on the first run. It does not open a single prison cell.

Getting to Gerstahn
Alliance flies to Morgan’s Vigil or Thorium Point. Horde flies to Kargath, Thorium Point or Flame Crest. Enter Blackrock Mountain from Burning Steppes or Searing Gorge, ride the chain to the central platform, pass Forgewright’s Tomb, take the second chain down, cross the Grinding Quarry and the Masonry to the portal.
Inside, walk into the big entry hall and turn right into the Detention Block. Clear the outer ring, then take the middle corridor lined with prison alcoves. The WoW Forever High Interrogator Gerstahn pull sits in the center of that ring. The dungeon opens at 48, most groups arrive around 56.
- Psychic Scream is the whole fight, because feared players run into the next pack.
- Dispel Shadow Word: Pain on sight.
- Interrupt Mana Burn or your healer goes dry in the middle of the scream.
- Purge or burn through Shadow Shield before it eats your damage.
- Tremor Totem and Fear Ward trivialize the fear, while Berserker Rage is a coin toss.
- Tank her in a corner so fear paths stay short.
Her other loot: Blackveil Cape, Enthralled Sphere, Kentic Amice and Greaves of Withering Despair. Casters roll, everyone else waits for the key.
Looting rules that ruin runs
The WoW Forever Prison Cell Key behaves like a greedy quest item wearing a white quality border. Read these before you blame the loot system.
- Gerstahn drops exactly one key per kill, so three players who need it means three kills.
- The key is unique, so it only shows for a player who does not own one.
- If any group member owns the key, even in the bank, nobody sees it on the corpse.
- The key is permanent, so kill Gerstahn once per character and never again.
- A keyholder can open every cell for the group, and the quest NPC inside still talks to everyone.
Alliance chain step by step
The WoW Forever Marshal Windsor storyline is the longest attunement in the game, and the key enters at step eight. Everything before it is flying, everything after it is BRD.
- Accept Dragonkin Menace from Helendis Riverhorn and kill 15 Black Broodlings, 10 Black Dragonspawn, 4 Black Wyrmkin and 1 Black Drake along the eastern edge of Burning Steppes.
- Take The True Masters and carry Helendis Riverhorn’s Letter to Magistrate Solomon in the Lakeshire town hall, Redridge Mountains, /way 30.0 44.2.
- Take The True Masters and carry Solomon’s Plea to Bolvar to Highlord Bolvar Fordragon in Stormwind Keep, Stormwind City, /way 78 18.
- Complete The True Masters by speaking to Lady Katrana Prestor at /way 78.0 17.8 and then to Bolvar again.
- Complete The True Masters by taking Bolvar’s Decree back to Magistrate Solomon in Lakeshire.
- Complete The True Masters by reporting to Marshal Maxwell at Morgan’s Vigil, /way 84.6 68.8.
- Complete The True Masters by finding Ragged John in the cave north of the Ruins of Thaurissan, /way 65.0 23.6, and returning to Maxwell.
- Take Marshal Windsor, kill Gerstahn, loot the Prison Cell Key, open Windsor’s cell and turn in.
- Take Abandoned Hope and carry the bad news back to Marshal Maxwell.
- Loot A Crumpled Up Note from BRD mobs or the non-elite slaves outside the portal and hand A Crumpled Up Note to Windsor in his cell.
- Take A Shred of Hope, kill General Angerforge and Golem Lord Argelmach for Marshal Windsor’s Lost Information and its second copy, and return to Windsor.
- Take Jail Break!, escort Windsor out of the prison and turn in to Marshal Maxwell.
- Take Stormwind Rendezvous and talk to Squire Rowe at the Stormwind gates, /way 70.4 85.6, to summon Reginald Windsor.
- Complete The Great Masquerade by walking Windsor to the Keep, surviving Onyxia‘s dragonkin reveal and turning in to Bolvar.
- Take The Dragon’s Eye and bring the Fragment of the Dragon’s Eye to Haleh in Winterspring, /way 54.6 51.2.
- Take Drakefire Amulet, kill General Drakkisath in Upper Blackrock Spire, loot Blood of the Black Dragon Champion and return to Haleh for the Drakefire Amulet, your entry ticket to Onyxia’s Lair.
The note only starts dropping after Abandoned Hope is turned in. Farming slaves outside the instance is solo work with a poor drop rate, which is still better than begging four strangers to clear trash for a scrap of paper.
Group size and kill list
| Step | Group | What dies |
|---|---|---|
| Dragonkin Menace | 2 to 3 players at 54 | Elite dragonkin in Burning Steppes |
| The True Masters x6 | Solo | Your flight path gold |
| Marshal Windsor | 5 players | Detention Block trash, High Interrogator Gerstahn |
| A Crumpled Up Note | Solo outside, 5 inside | Slaves or any BRD mob |
| A Shred of Hope | 5 players | General Angerforge, Golem Lord Argelmach |
| Jail Break! | 5 players | Pre-clear, ambushes, released prisoners |
| The Great Masquerade | Solo or group | Elite dragonkin, NPCs tank |
| The Dragon’s Eye | Solo with a mount | Nothing if you jump the ravine |
| Drakefire Amulet | Upper Blackrock Spire raid group | General Drakkisath |
Jail Break! without wiping
The WoW Forever Jail Break quest is a slow escort through rooms you already cleared, which the dungeon politely refills. Windsor walks clockwise around the prison ring, grabs his gear in the Supply Room, crosses the entry hall, circles the Halls of the Law and sprints to the portal.
Clear the path first. The Supply Room is the northwest door of the prison ring and it spawns extra dwarves on top of whatever you left alive. Lord Roccor patrols the Halls of the Law. Kill both before anyone touches the quest.
Every player must turn in A Shred of Hope before anyone accepts Jail Break!, because the escort starts instantly. Do not release your spirit, do not stray from Windsor, keep a free quest log slot, and do not zone out until the quest shows complete. A failed escort means abandon, reset the instance, retake.
- Clear the entry hall with all its side corridors.
- Clear the west side of the prison ring and the Supply Room.
- Clear the Halls of the Law ring including Lord Roccor, and Houndmaster Grebmar if you want a quiet lap.
- Expect an ambush before the Supply Room and extra spawns inside it.
- Windsor opens several cells on the Halls of the Law lap, and most of them release hostile prisoners.
- One cell holds a friendly prisoner, after which Windsor runs for the exit.
Rewards: choice of Blade of Reckoning or Skilled Fighting Blade, plus Ward of the Elements. Windsor fights well once geared, so a clean pre-clear plus a sixth tank is the fastest version.
Alliance Kharan Mighthammer chain
The WoW Forever Kharan Mighthammer quest line is shorter, needs the same key and ends at the Emperor’s throne.
- Take The Smoldering Ruins of Thaurissan and listen to Royal Historian Archesonus in Ironforge, /way 39.6 55.8.
- Complete The Smoldering Ruins of Thaurissan by collecting 12 Thaurissan Relics in the Ruins of Thaurissan, Burning Steppes, for a Ring of the Aristocrat.
- Take Kharan Mighthammer from King Magni Bronzebeard, /way 39.4 55.8, and open Kharan’s cell in the Detention Block.
- Complete Kharan’s Tale by listening to Kharan Mighthammer in his cell.
- Carry The Bearer of Bad News back to Magni.
- Complete The Fate of the Kingdom by killing Emperor Dagran Thaurissan while keeping the princess alive.
- Finish The Princess’s Surprise by talking to the princess and discovering the rescue was not wanted.
Horde Commander Gor’shak chain
The WoW Forever Commander Gor’shak quest proves the key is not Alliance property. Horde needs it for two cells, not one.
- Complete Disharmony of Flame for Thunderheart in Kargath by killing Overmaster Pyron outside the BRD portal.
- Take Commander Gor’shak from Galamav the Marksman, /way 5.8 47.6, and open Gor’shak’s cell with the key.
- Complete What Is Going On? by holding the cell while Dark Iron guards rush Gor’shak.
- Complete What Is Going On? by opening Kharan’s cell, speaking to Kharan Mighthammer and reporting to Thrall in Orgrimmar, /way 32.0 37.8.
- Complete The Eastern Kingdoms by listening to Thrall.
- Complete The Royal Rescue by killing Emperor Dagran Thaurissan and leaving the princess breathing.
- Finish The Princess Saved? by speaking to the princess and collecting the ending.
Pair the Kargath bounties like KILL ON SIGHT: Dark Iron Dwarves with this run. Anvilrage Guardsman and Anvilrage Warden packs in the prison ring count, and you are killing them anyway.
Skips, shortcuts and workarounds
The fastest WoW Forever Prison Cell Key is the one you never loot. The WoW Forever rogue lockpicking route opens every Detention Block cell for free and forever.
| Method | Requirement | Catch |
|---|---|---|
| Rogue Pick Lock | 250 Lockpicking | Rogue must be present for every door |
| Arcanite Skeleton Key | Blacksmithing 275 | Consumed per lock |
| Large Seaforium Charge | Engineering | Consumed per door |
| Prison Cell Key | One High Interrogator Gerstahn kill | One copy per kill |
| Shadowforge Key | Dark Iron Legacy, Ironfel from Fineous Darkvire | Skips the Detention Block, opens no cells |
| A Crumpled Up Note | Farm slaves outside the portal | Starts dropping only after Abandoned Hope |
| Haleh shortcut | Speed mount or Sprint | Jump the ravine instead of clearing Mazthoril |
Do not confuse the two. The WoW Forever Blackrock Depths key that saves an hour of trash is the Shadowforge Key. The prison key saves exactly nothing on repeat runs, except when a quest NPC lives behind bars.
What the key unlocks
The WoW Forever BRD prison cells are the only doors this key touches. It opens no entrance, no teleport and no raid by itself.
| Door | Why you open it |
|---|---|
| Marshal Windsor cell | Alliance Onyxia chain, steps 8, 10, 11, 12 |
| Kharan Mighthammer cell | Alliance Kharan chain, Horde What Is Going On? |
| Commander Gor’shak cell | Horde rescue chain start |
| Supply Room door | Pre-clear before Jail Break! |
| Onyxia’s Lair | Indirect only, through the Drakefire Amulet |
Lore
High Interrogator Gerstahn runs the Dark Iron interrogation block, where the Dark Iron keep prisoners until they stop being useful. Her cells hold three problems for three different kings.
Marshal Windsor was captured by the Dark Iron while carrying proof that the Stormwind court answers to the black dragonflight, and that Lady Katrana Prestor is Onyxia in a noble dress. His lost notes sit with General Angerforge and Golem Lord Argelmach, and his escape triggers the Great Masquerade in Stormwind City. Kharan Mighthammer is the only guard who survived the kidnapping of Princess Moira on the road to Lakeshire. He swears she is ensorcelled.
She is not. Moira fell for Emperor Dagran Thaurissan, married him and carries his heir. Magni sends the Alliance to kill the Emperor, Thrall sends the Horde after the same throne, and both factions end up rescuing a princess who never asked for it. Forever sits in year one, the exact year this happens.
Where does the Prison Cell Key drop in WoW Forever?
High Interrogator Gerstahn drops it every kill in the Blackrock Depths Detention Block, one copy per kill, bind on pickup.
Can a rogue skip the Prison Cell Key?
Yes. A rogue with 250 Lockpicking opens every Detention Block cell, which saves the Gerstahn kill and the loot argument.
Why can nobody loot the key from Gerstahn?
Someone in the group already owns the key, even in a bank, which blocks the drop for everyone.
Do Horde players need the Prison Cell Key?
Yes. Commander Gor’shak and Kharan Mighthammer both sit behind locked cell doors in the Horde rescue chain.
What happens if Jail Break! fails?
Abandon the quest, reset the instance, then retake it from Marshal Windsor once everyone turns in A Shred of Hope.
