WoW Forever Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer Guide: Onyxia Head Buff
Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer is a 2 hour city buff worth +10% spell crit, +5% melee and ranged crit and +140 attack power. In Forever you catch it by standing in Orgrimmar or Stormwind City when a raider turns in the Head of Onyxia, and that first becomes possible on December 9, 2026, when Onyxia’s Lair opens.
The fine print hurts. The World of Warcraft Forever Onyxia buff dies with you, fires once per city every 6 hours, and is reported to do nothing inside raids. Old routes, old timings and old logout tricks still decide who walks around with it.
What Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer Gives You
One cast, four effects, zero cost to you. The tooltip lies by omission, so here is the full breakdown. The WoW Forever Dragonslayer buff duration is 120 minutes of played time, not real time.
| Effect | Value | Who actually cares |
|---|---|---|
| Spell critical strike chance | +10% | Mages, Warlocks, Holy Paladins and every caster who hits the crit cap of their ego. |
| Melee critical strike chance | +5% | Warriors, Rogues, Feral Druids, Enhancement Shamans and Paladins with a two hander. |
| Ranged critical strike chance | +5% | Hunters. |
| Attack power | +140 melee and ranged | Every physical class, Hunters included since ranged attack power was fixed to count it. |
| Duration | 120 minutes | Anyone who logs out correctly. |
| Dispel type | None | Enemy Priests, who will hate this row. |
| Level limit | Level 60 and below | Nobody, since Forever caps at 60 forever. |
Where to Get It: Onyxia’s Lair, Heads and Coordinates
The buff has one source at Forever launch. Onyxia drops one head per kill, and the head goes to a city. Nefarian also drops a Head of Nefarian that fires the same spell, but no Blackwing Lair appears on the Forever roadmap, so treat that head as a rumor with teeth.
The WoW Forever Onyxia’s Lair release date is December 9, 2026, together with Barrow Deeps (10 players) and Hyjal Summit (20 players). Onyxia stays a 40 player raid. The beta caps at level 30, so no one is dropping heads before launch, no matter what the guild recruiter promised.
| Place | Zone | Coordinates | Why you go there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Onyxia’s Lair entrance | Dustwallow Marsh | 52, 75 in the Wyrmbog | Kill the dragon, loot the head. |
| Thrall | Orgrimmar | Grommash Hold, Valley of Wisdom | Horde head turn-in. |
| Overlord Runthak | Orgrimmar | 52.6, 82.6 near the gate | Horde buff trigger. |
| Highlord Bolvar Fordragon | Stormwind City | Stormwind Keep throne room | Alliance head turn-in. |
| Major Mattingly | Stormwind City | Left fork past the bridge, Valley of Heroes | Alliance buff trigger. |
Entry needs attunement. Alliance and Horde both end their chains with the Drakefire Amulet quest, which hands out the Drakefire Amulet. The Horde chain also runs through Blackrock Spire and For The Horde!, which is its own world buff factory. Coordinates follow the original 60 map, so expect a shift if Forever redraws the cities.
How to Trigger the Buff: Exact Turn-In Steps
The WoW Forever Onyxia head turn in is a two quest chain, and each quest is completable once per character. Give the head to someone who has never done it, or the head sits in a bag and rots with your guild’s credibility.
Horde
- The raid kills Onyxia and a character who has not completed the chain loots the Head of Onyxia.
- That character right clicks the head to start Victory for the Horde and travels to Orgrimmar.
- The character turns the head in to Thrall in Grommash Hold.
- Thrall offers For All To See, which sends the character to Overlord Runthak in the Valley of Strength.
- The character turns in For All To See and picks Dragonslayer’s Signet, Onyxia Tooth Pendant or Onyxia Blood Talisman.
- Overlord Runthak yells his speech, the head goes up on the gate and every player in Orgrimmar gets Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer.
Alliance
- The raid kills Onyxia and a fresh character loots the Alliance Head of Onyxia.
- That character starts Victory for the Alliance and turns the head in to Highlord Bolvar Fordragon in Stormwind Keep.
- Highlord Bolvar Fordragon offers Celebrating Good Times, which points to Major Mattingly in the Valley of Heroes.
- The character turns the quest in to Mattingly and picks one of the same three rewards.
- Major Mattingly delivers his speech, the head hangs from the arches and the whole city is buffed.
You do not need to stand next to the NPC. The buff covers the whole city zone, auction house included. It only has to be the right city on the right shard, which is where Forever sharding may bite, since buffs in the old layered realms landed per layer.
Timing, Cooldowns and Sabotage
The speech is your alarm clock. Players watching with a spy alt get roughly 15 seconds between the first yell and the buff, which is enough to log out the spy and log in the main if your addons are not bloated.
| Rule | Number or behavior |
|---|---|
| Cooldown per city | 6 hours while the head hangs, and nobody can turn in another head during it. |
| Warning window | About 15 seconds from the first yell to the buff. |
| Crowd control on the NPC | No longer stops the event once the quest is turned in. |
| Killing the NPC mid speech | Cancels the buff, and the enemy faction knows it. |
| Cooldown reset | An enemy Priest takes control of the NPC, the city kills him, and he respawns in roughly 5 to 10 minutes ready for a new head. |
PvP rulesets turn this into a hobby. Guard the speech with bodies, not hope. The reset works in both directions, so a hostile Priest can also clear a hanging head for you if you are polite and bring gold.
Read this before you plan a raid night around it. According to Savix, who says he got it from Blizzard staff, traditional world buffs will not work in Forever raids. Blizzard has not confirmed it. Until patch notes say otherwise, assume the buff is for the open world, dungeons and PvP, and falls silent the moment you zone into a raid.
If the rumor holds, world buffs in WoW Forever raids become a museum exhibit. The buff still matters for the 9 new dungeons, world PvP, gold farming and leveling alts, since everyone at 60 or below qualifies.
How to Keep It: Logout Trick, Death and Chronoboon
The buff timer only ticks while you are online. That is the entire WoW Forever world buff logout trick, and it has not aged a day.
- Log out inside the city and wait for the head announcement on a spy alt or a guild channel.
- Log in on the main within the 15 second window, take the buff, and log out again immediately.
- Keep the main offline until the content that needs it, because every minute online costs a minute of buff.
- Log out inside an inn or a city for an instant logout, since a 20 second logout in the wild is a gamble with PvP.
- Never die with the buff, because death removes it instantly and no spirit healer gives it back.
What strips it is short. Death strips it. Nothing else does, since the spell has no dispel type, so enemy Priests will purge your other buffs and leave this one. Getting a second drop does not add time, it only resets the timer to 120 minutes.
Anniversary players know the WoW Forever Chronoboon Displacer question already. The Chronoboon Displacer stores all active world buffs, returns them at the same remaining duration, blocks you from receiving the stored buffs again, and puts itself on a 1 hour cooldown after release. Forever has not announced it. If it arrives, it replaces the logout trick for people with jobs.
What Stacks With It and What Overwrites It
Different world buffs stack with each other. The same spell never stacks with itself, so an Onyxia drop on top of a Nefarian drop simply refreshes Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer.
| Buff | Source | Interaction with Dragonslayer |
|---|---|---|
| Warchief’s Blessing | Head of Rend Blackhand turned in to Thrall | Stacks. Horde only, 1 hour. |
| Songflower Serenade | Cleansed Corrupted Songflower in Felwood | Stacks. 1 hour, grab it last. |
| Fengus’ Ferocity | Dire Maul North tribute run | Stacks. Its attack power adds on top of the 140. |
| Mol’dar’s Moxie | Dire Maul North tribute run | Stacks. |
| Slip’kik’s Savvy | Dire Maul North tribute run | Stacks. Casters stack its crit with the 10%. |
| Sayge’s Dark Fortune of Damage | Sayge at the Darkmoon Faire in Elwynn Forest or Mulgore | Stacks. |
| Spirit of Zandalar | Heart of Hakkar turned in near Yojamba Isle | Stacks, if Zul’Gurub ever exists in Forever. |
| Traces of Silithyst | Silithus PvP objective | Stacks, where the zone content exists. |
| Second head turn-in | Head of Onyxia or Head of Nefarian | Overwrites. Timer resets to 120 minutes, nothing adds. |
Forever campsite buffs are a separate family. Blizzard says they do not stack with matching class buffs, and nothing has been said about world buffs, so test before you brag.
The Old Buff Route, Forever Edition
WoW Forever world buffs follow the same law as always. Long buffs first, short buffs last, logout between every step.
- Run Dire Maul North tribute with a Mage in the group and collect all three ogre buffs.
- Take a portal to Orgrimmar or Stormwind City and log out in the city before the head timer comes off cooldown.
- Log in for Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer on the yell, then log out again.
- Horde players stay parked in Orgrimmar for Warchief’s Blessing if a Rend head is due.
- Visit the Darkmoon Faire during its first week of the month for Sayge’s Dark Fortune of Damage.
- Finish with Songflower Serenade in Felwood, because its 1 hour clock punishes anyone who takes it early.
Which Classes and Raids Want It Most
Physical classes gain the most per slot, since they get both halves of the buff through attack power and crit. The best world buffs for WoW Forever warriors remain this one plus the tribute run, and nothing on the Forever feature list changes that math.
| Class | What they use | Priority |
|---|---|---|
| Warrior | 140 attack power and 5% crit turn straight into rage and damage. | Highest |
| Rogue | Attack power and crit on every hit. | Highest |
| Hunter | Ranged attack power now counts, plus 5% ranged crit. | High |
| Mage | 10% spell crit doubles as a fire talent enabler. | High |
| Warlock | 10% spell crit on every nuke they cast. | High |
| Paladin, including Undead Paladins | Holy gets 10% crit heals, Retribution gets attack power. | Medium |
| Shaman and Druid | Split value depending on spec. | Medium |
| Priest | Crit heals, and nothing else. | Low |
Raid priority depends on the unconfirmed rule. If buffs work in raids, the 10 player Barrow Deeps gains the most per head, because each player carries a bigger share of the damage. If they do not, the buff belongs to dungeons like Blackmaw Hold and Shaper’s Terrace, and to anyone ganking in front of Onyxia’s Lair.
Lore: Why Two Cities Scream About a Dead Dragon
Onyxia spent years in Stormwind as Lady Katrana Prestor, a noble advisor steering the regency of Highlord Bolvar Fordragon. Her schemes cost the kingdom its queen and helped King Varian vanish. The ceremony exists because Stormwind needed to hang its own mistake in public.
The Horde version is simpler. Thrall sees a threat to his people removed and lets Overlord Runthak turn the kill into propaganda. Forever sits in the first year after the Forsaken Kingdom campaign and before Molten Core, which makes her head the first great trophy of Classic Plus world buffs and of this new timeline.
When can I get Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer in WoW Forever?
Onyxia’s Lair unlocks on December 9, 2026, so the first heads can reach Orgrimmar and Stormwind that raid week.
Does the Dragonslayer buff work inside WoW Forever raids?
Reports say world buffs will not work in Forever raids, but Blizzard has not officially confirmed that rule so far.
How long does Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer last?
It lasts 120 minutes of online time, and the timer pauses while you stay logged out of the character.
Can one character turn in the Head of Onyxia twice?
No. Both turn-in quests are once per character, so every new head needs someone who never completed them.
What removes Rallying Cry of the Dragonslayer?
Only death removes it. The spell has no dispel type, so enemy Priests cannot purge it from your character.
