WoW Forever Scepter of the Shifting Sands Guide

The Scepter of the Shifting Sands is the key that rings the Scarab Gong, opens Ahn’Qiraj for the whole realm and pays out the Black Qiraji Resonating Crystal to anyone who rings it inside a 10-hour window. The chain starts with Baristolth of the Shifting Sands in Cenarion Hold, Silithus, at /way 49.6, 36.6. It runs 32 quests, eats two Blackwing Lair lockouts plus Molten Core and Onyxia’s Lair, and demands roughly 41,600 carapace fragments. One guild, one candidate, unless your raid enjoys suffering twice.

Status check for the Forever player: Blizzard has not dated Ahn’Qiraj for World of Warcraft: Forever, and Molten Core is not in the launch raid lineup. This WoW Forever Scepter of the Shifting Sands guide therefore runs on the Classic Anniversary rules, because the chain physically requires those raids. When Forever tuning lands, the skeleton stays and the numbers get patched.

Where the chain starts and every questgiver coordinate

Accept What Tomorrow Brings from Baristolth of the Shifting Sands. Accepting it reveals the Brood of Nozdormu at Hated 0/36000. Fly to the Caverns of Time entrance in Tanaris, walk near Anachronos and the objective completes. Do not hit the elite dragons around him, they bite.

Stage 1: the introduction and the Broodlord head

The opening three quests decide your whole schedule. The Blackwing Lair kill in step two is the first hard gate of this World of Warcraft Forever legendary quest, and it only drops one trophy per kill.

  1. What Tomorrow Brings sends you to Anachronos and back to Baristolth of the Shifting Sands for 100 reputation.
  2. Only One May Rise requires killing Broodlord Lashlayer and looting the Head of the Broodlord Lashlayer, which drops once per kill.
  3. The Path of the Righteous hands you the Agent of Nozdormu badge and asks for 200 Silithid Carapace Fragment, then rewards a Proxy of Nozdormu.

Your guild must not clear Blackwing Lair that week until the chosen candidate holds Only One May Rise. Kill Broodlord without the quest in anyone’s log and you just burned seven days for a trash pile.

Stage 2: the Brood of Nozdormu grind

The Hand of the Righteous is repeatable: 200 fragments in, 200 reputation out, 220 for Humans with the Diplomacy bonus. You repeat it until Neutral. That is the entire WoW Forever Brood of Nozdormu reputation experience, and yes, it is exactly as fun as it sounds.

MetricNon-HumanHuman

Fragments for the repeatable41,40037,600
Fragments including Path of the Righteous41,60037,800
  • Elite silithids drop one to three fragments each, Hive’Regal elites up to four, and non-elites zero or one.
  • Only you and your deputies can loot fragments, so every turn-in’s Proxy should go to a trusted farmer immediately.
  • Never use a Proxy on a player with a full bag, because the badge fails to land and the Proxy is gone.
  • Fragments are tradeable, so buying stacks from the Auction House counts exactly like farming them.
  • You can overfarm to 2999/3000 Neutral, but only if you do not turn in Anachronos first.

PvP realms turn Silithus hives into a meat grinder. Bring bodyguards, or pay for them. Racing guilds skip the overfarm and move on at Neutral 1/3000.

Stage 3: Anachronos and the history lesson

  1. Anachronos is picked up from Baristolth of the Shifting Sands at Neutral and turned in to Anachronos, who also lets you pick a Signet Ring of the Bronze Dragonflight.
  2. Long Forgotten Memories ends at the Crystalline Tear by the Scarab Wall.
  3. A Pawn on the Eternal Board starts a scripted vision at the Tear, and wandering off or dying fails it, so verify completion before leaving.
  4. The Charge of the Dragonflights has no follow-up and simply points you at three shard chains.

The ring choice is locked until Exalted and an open Ahn’Qiraj. Pick by role: Signet Ring of the Bronze Dragonflight for agility melee, Signet Ring of the Bronze Dragonflight for casters and healers, Signet Ring of the Bronze Dragonflight for tanks.

Red Scepter Shard: Nefarian on a timer

Talk to Vaelastrasz the Corrupt in Blackwing Lair before anyone pulls him and accept Nefarius’s Corruption. A 5-hour timer starts. Kill Nefarian before it expires and loot the Red Scepter Shard.

Nefarian drops one Red Scepter Shard per kill, and the timer keeps running while anyone stays inside. Fail it and you receive From the Desk of Lord Victor Nefarius in the mail, plus a free extra week of waiting. This is the quest that makes a sub-week scepter impossible.

Rewards: Onyx Embedded Leggings or Amulet of Shadow Shielding. Grab Draconic for Dummies Chapter VII from the table past Broodlord during this same run.

Green Scepter Shard: the Emerald Dream tour

  1. Eranikus, Tyrant of the Dream starts when you approach the Shade of Eranikus in The Temple of Atal’Hakkar and Malfurion Stormrage appears.
  2. Tyrande and Remulos starts at the Forest Wisp in Teldrassil and ends at Keeper Remulos in Moonglade.
  3. The Nightmare’s Corruption needs four fragments from the dragon portals in Ashenvale, Feralas, The Hinterlands and Duskwood.
  4. The Nightmare Manifests is a raid defense of Nighthaven that awards the Green Scepter Shard.
  5. The Champion Returns sends the shard back to Anachronos.

Horde players must run through Darnassus to reach the Wisp. Wisps inside the city are civilians, and killing one hands you a Dishonorable Kill. Do not fight guards, just ride.

The Twilight Corrupter spams Soul Corruption on everyone within 40 yards and mind-controls with Creature of Nightmare. Every death makes him stronger. Heal from outside his line of sight and let 41-yard ranged pick him apart.

The Nightmare Manifests fails if Keeper Remulos, Tyrande or Eranikus, Tyrant of the Dream dies. Stack inside the lakeside house, pull Nightmare Phantasm adds one at a time, then burn Eranikus to 20% and stop. Credit is shared with the whole raid, the only shard that works that way. Sheen of Zanza reflects the Phantasm fears.

One careless AoE on a PvP-flagged player turns the Cenarion guards hostile and tanks the raid’s reputation. Drop below Neutral and the quest cannot be turned in. Kick griefers on sight.

Rewards: Drake Tooth Necklace or Drudge Boots.

Blue Scepter Shard: the longest joke in Azeroth

Talk to the Spirit of Azuregos or a living Azuregos for the Magical Ledger, which starts Azuregos’s Magical Ledger. Narain Soothfancy cannot read it, so Translating the Ledger splits into three forks you can run in parallel.

Fork 1: the goggles

  1. Stewvul, Ex-B.F.F. ends at the Inconspicuous Crate by the Greymane Wall.
  2. Scrying Goggles? No Problem! needs Narain’s Scrying Goggles from any Molten Core trash, boss or chest, and rewards 3 Major Rejuvenation Potion.

Only the quest holder can loot the goggles, and grey or white items stay on group loot even under Master Loot. Switch to Free For All in a trusted run or the drop rots on an unlooted corpse.

Fork 2: the 500 pound chicken

  1. Never Ask Me About My Business ends at Dirge Quikcleave in the Gadgetzan inn.
  2. The Isle of Dread! needs 20 Chimaerok Tenderloin and Lakmaeran’s Carcass from Lord Lakmaeran on the Isle of Dread in Feralas.
  3. Dirge’s Kickin’ Chimaerok Chops consumes the fuel and salt and pays 20 Dirge’s Kickin’ Chimaerok Chops plus the Recipe: Dirge’s Kickin’ Chimaerok Chops.
  4. Return to Narain delivers the 500 Pound Chicken.

Lord Lakmaeran dies to a geared five-man with mana consumables and respawns in roughly 20 to 30 minutes. The recipe is tradeable and Unique, which makes it a nice sale if nobody in your guild cooks.

Fork 3: the book

  1. Draconic for Dummies ends at the Freshly Dug Dirt on the southern island far off Tanaris.
  2. Love Song for Narain is optional, but returning to Meridith afterwards grants Siren’s Song, 150% swim speed for 3 minutes, which beats drowning in fatigue.
  3. rAnS0m gives a Ransom Letter to bring back to Narain Soothfancy.
  4. Decoy! hands over Narain’s Special Kit; place the Bag of Gold in Winterspring and kill Number Two, who can be kited by a hunter.
  5. The Only Prescription requires eight chapters bound with the Magical Book Binding into Draconic For Dummies: Volume II.

Maws and the buoy

The Good News and The Bad News eats the shopping list and gives the Arcanite Buoy. The Wrath of Neptulon sends you to the Bay of Storms in Azshara to summon Maws with 20 or more players. Stay on the surface, keep a hunter on Tranquilizing Shot for his Frenzy, and save healer mana for Dark Water below 20%.

One Blue Scepter Shard drops. Hand it to Anachronos for Band of Icy Depths or Darkwater Robes. The book fork also paid out the Gnomish Turban of Psychic Might.

Blizzard’s own Anniversary note put the earliest possible gong just over a week after launch on a motivated realm. Realistic guilds should budget two to three weeks.

The gong, the Ten-Hour War and the mount

  1. The Might of Kalimdor is turned in to Anachronos once all three shards are delivered and hands you The Scepter of the Shifting Sands.
  2. Bang a Gong! is taken from The Scarab Gong and rewards the Black Qiraji Resonating Crystal.
  3. Treasure of the Timeless One from Jonathan the Revelator lets scepter holders pick a weapon after the war.

The gong only works after your realm finishes the War Effort and a 5-day transport pause ends. On Anniversary realms unfinished supplies start auto-completing after 15 days. The first ring starts the WoW Forever Ten-Hour War: every scepter holder who rings within 10 hours gets the mount, and after that it is gone from the realm forever.

That makes the WoW Forever Ahn’Qiraj opening a coordinated ceremony, not a solo flex. Once the WoW Forever Gates of Ahn’Qiraj open, Ahn’Qiraj unlocks for everyone, including the guild that farmed nothing. Only the WoW Forever Black Qiraji mount stays exclusive.

Which class and spec should carry the scepter

The scepter has no stats, so class matters only for logistics and the final weapon pick. The correct answer is the player with the most free hours, then the class below that wastes the fewest of them.

Class and specWhy it helpsFinal weapon fit
Druid, Restoration or BalanceMoonglade teleport for Remulos, travel and aquatic form, can prowl through enemy citiesFang of Korialstrasz, or Shadowsong’s Sorrow for Feral
Rogue, Combat or AssassinationStealth through Darnassus, Undercity or Stormwind, Sprint for the swimRavencrest’s Legacy or Shadowsong’s Sorrow
Mage, Frost or FirePortals to faction cities, Blink and Slow Fall for escapesRunesword of the Red or Fang of Korialstrasz
Hunter, MarksmanshipKites Number Two solo, brings Tranquilizing Shot, Feign Death in hostile citiesRavencrest’s Legacy as a stat stick
Main tank or raid leaderNeeded in every raid on the chain, zero time to farmPick someone else

Druid is the strongest pick for a Forever guild: fastest Moonglade trips, the best city infiltration and a caster weapon that stays relevant. Pick Rogue if your druids are all glued to the healing meter.

Guild politics: deciding who gets it

A WoW Forever Scarab Lord costs the guild dozens of raider hours, several thousand gold in materials and at least four boss drops that nobody else can use. Decide before the first Broodlord pull, in writing, or enjoy the Discord meltdown.

  • Rank candidates by raid attendance over the last two months, not by who shouts loudest.
  • Require proof of playtime for the farm, because 207 turn-ins do not grind themselves.
  • Make the candidate fund or source a fixed share of the arcanite, gems and ore.
  • Assign Proxy deputies by name, so fragments go to one bag instead of five competing bags.
  • Agree that a second candidate only starts after the first scepter is in hand.
  • Set a loyalty clause, since a gquit after the gong turns the guild into free labor for another roster.
  • Publish the lockout plan so nobody clears Blackwing Lair early and wastes a week.

Two candidates double the head, Red Shard, Ragnaros and Onyxia kills. Three candidates make the raid leader quit. Plan accordingly.

Exact stats, procs and how it actually performs

The Scepter of the Shifting Sands is item level 60, Binds when picked up, Unique, with zero stats and zero procs. It is a key. Its performance is measured in the Black Qiraji Resonating Crystal, a very fast epic mount that requires level 40, plus the reward pile below.

Real performance: the two spell weapons are the only rewards that raid well into Ahn’Qiraj. The resistance pieces are situational swap gear. The Black Qiraji Resonating Crystal works in the open world, and in original Classic data it also works inside the Temple of Ahn’Qiraj.

Lore: why a gong needs a scepter

A thousand years ago the qiraji and silithid swarmed out of Ahn’Qiraj in the War of the Shifting Sands. Archdruid Fandral Staghelm lost his son Valstann in the fighting. The bronze flight, with red, green and blue dragons, drove the insects back, and Anachronos and the druids raised the Scarab Wall.

Anachronos forged the Scepter of the Shifting Sands to open the wall when the world was ready. Fandral refused to be its bearer and shattered it on the ground. The shards went to the flights, and a millennium later their keepers are corrupted, dead, or a shark. That is the Classic Plus Scepter questline in one sentence: you clean up a grieving elf’s tantrum across two continents.

Where does the Scepter of the Shifting Sands chain start?

Baristolth of the Shifting Sands in Cenarion Hold, Silithus, at 49.6, 36.6 offers What Tomorrow Brings to start everything.

How many Silithid Carapace Fragments does the scepter need?

About 41,600 including the first turn-in, or roughly 37,800 for Humans thanks to their Diplomacy reputation bonus.

How many raid lockouts does the chain take at minimum?

Two Blackwing Lair clears, one Molten Core and one Onyxia, plus open world raids for Corrupter, Eranikus and Maws.

Can more than one player get the Black Qiraji mount?

Yes. Every scepter holder who rings the Scarab Gong within ten hours of the first ring receives the mount.

Does the Scepter of the Shifting Sands have stats or procs?

No. It is a unique item level 60 key with zero stats, value sits in quest rewards and the mount.
