WoW Forever Seal of Ascension Guide: UBRS Key Attunement
The Seal of Ascension attunement is the only key to Upper Blackrock Spire, and the WoW Forever Seal of Ascension chain runs on the same old bones: loot an Unadorned Seal of Ascension in LBRS, farm three boss gemstones, hand everything to Vaelan, then beat Emberstrife half to death in Dustwallow Marsh and make him forge your ring. One keyholder opens the door for the entire group, so somebody in your guild is about to suffer for everyone.
Blizzard has published no Forever changes to this chain, so this is the proven Classic route with Forever rules on top. Forever launches November 4, 2026, beta opened September 17, and the setting sits before Molten Core, which parks Blackrock Spire right where your level 60 misery begins.
Prerequisites Before You Start
World of Warcraft Forever Upper Blackrock Spire attunement asks for no reputation and no previous dungeon. It asks for a character that survives Lower Blackrock Spire repeatedly and a spine that survives drop rates.
- Blackrock Spire lets you in at level 48 in Classic data, but the last LBRS bosses are level 62, so treat 58 to 60 as the real floor.
- Vaelan offers the first quest only while an Unadorned Seal of Ascension sits in your bags.
- Emberstrife is a level 61 elite, so bring a small group or a class that kites.
- Forever still blocks cross faction groups for dungeons and raids, so your Horde friend cannot carry your Alliance key.
- Hunters and warlocks must dismiss pets before the mind control step, because the drake becomes your pet.

Where the Chain Starts: Vaelan Location
Vaelan hides inside Lower Blackrock Spire as a lone Scarshield Infiltrator on a ledge above Hordemar City. Classic map data puts that infiltrator at roughly 46, 41 on the Blackrock Spire map. Every WoW Forever Vaelan location question gets the same answer, because vanilla dungeons remain in Forever and no patch note has moved him.
- Enter the instance, take the stairs on the right and drop down the ledge to the southeast.
- Go through the gate on the east side and continue into Hordemar City.
- Kill the first pack standing beside the sconce, then look for a dark stone ramp on your left.
- Climb to the far corner of that ramp and hop onto the ledge.
- Walk toward the orc at the edge, and he drops the disguise when you get close.
Full Step by Step Chain
The Seal of Ascension quest WoW Forever players inherit is two quests with the same name and a large pile of corpses between them. Every step below is mandatory. The only optional part is your dignity.
- Kill humanoids in Lower Blackrock Spire until an Unadorned Seal of Ascension drops, then keep it in your bags.
- Kill Highlord Omokk for the Gemstone of Spirestone.
- Kill War Master Voone for the Gemstone of Smolderthorn.
- Kill Overlord Wyrmthalak for the Gemstone of Bloodaxe.
- Talk to Vaelan to accept and complete the first Seal of Ascension in one visit.
- Accept the second Seal of Ascension and open Vaelan’s Gift for an Unforged Seal of Ascension and an Orb of Draconic Energy.
- Travel to the Wyrmbog in southern Dustwallow Marsh and enter the cave near 56, 87.
- Beat Emberstrife to about 10 percent, place the Unforged Seal and dominate him with the orb.
- Make the drake cast Flames of the Black Flight on the seal, then loot the Forged Seal of Ascension from the ground.
- Return to Vaelan in Lower Blackrock Spire and receive the Seal of Ascension ring.

LBRS Drops: Seal and Gemstones
WoW Forever LBRS gemstones drop from the three generals of the lower citadel, one gem per general, at rates that punish optimism. The seal itself falls off ordinary trash.

Gems drop in raid groups and you do not need the quest active for them to appear. Old reports put each gem around 15 percent. Forever made unique dungeon boss items blue, and nobody has confirmed whether the gems got the promotion, so set loot rules before the pull.
Horde players chasing Onyxia need the same three generals dead for Warlord’s Command. Stack both jobs into one run and waste a single evening instead of two.
Emberstrife: Forging the Seal
WoW Forever Emberstrife is a level 61 elite drake sitting alone in his den south of Onyxia’s Lair. He can be feared, slept, stunned and slowed, which is why half of Azeroth solos him and the other half dies trying.
- Fight him in the shallow water below his ledge, because the ledge near the ceiling causes line of sight errors.
- Place the Unforged Seal only when he is low, because a placed seal fades after about two minutes.
- Everyone stops attacking when the emote says his will is faltering, which happens near 10 percent.
- The seal holder uses the Orb of Draconic Energy while nothing hits them, because damage breaks the channel.
- Turn the drake toward the seal and press the leftmost ability on the pet bar.
- If your bar addon hides the pet bar, type /cast Flames of the Black Flight in chat.
- Walk the drake away, release control, kill him and loot the seal before anyone else does.
Flames of the Black Flight forges exactly one seal, then sits on a three hour cooldown that only Emberstrife’s death resets. Every extra keyholder means another kill and a respawn of a few minutes.
The Forged Seal on the ground can be looted by anyone holding the quest, strangers and the opposite faction included. If both items run out of charges, Classic players report that abandoning the quest and asking Vaelan again refills them without new gemstones.

Forever has published raid sizes for Barrow Deeps at 10 and Hyjal Summit at 20, both opening December 9, but no cap for Upper Blackrock Spire. Plan around the Classic 10 until the beta says otherwise.

If you want to know how to get Seal of Ascension in WoW Forever without living in LBRS, these are the old tricks that still beat every new idea.
- Collect gemstones before taking the quest, because the drops do not require it.
- Stealth groups of rogues and druids reach Omokk, Voone and Wyrmthalak without full clears, then reset for another roll.
- Invisibility potions carry a solo player past the Hordemar patrols to Vaelan.
- Hunters reach Vaelan alone by chaining Feign Death past each patrol.
- Warlocks with slow fall, a speed item and an invisibility potion solo Omokk for the Spirestone gem.
- Engineers skip the trash packs before the ogre room with rocket boots or a speed trinket.
- Classic players report that jumping down after a UBRS clear lands near Vaelan, and shamans treat the fall as a Reincarnation test.
- Carry a spare Unadorned Seal at the final turn in, because Vaelan has a history of ignoring forged seals without one.
- Rogues cannot pick this door and no engineering charge opens it, so the ring is the only way in.
One keyholder opens the door for nine other people. Classic keyholders sold openings for gold, and a Forever world without realms only makes that customer base bigger.
What the Seal of Ascension Unlocks
The WoW Forever UBRS key is a ring, not a key. The Seal of Ascension attunement ends with a blue finger slot item that opens the Upper Blackrock Spire door and gets you one step closer to Onyxia.

A Classic Plus UBRS key still works like the 2004 one. The holder walks into the hall, the group kills the guards in each side chamber, the glowing runes fade and the double doors open. General Drakkisath waits at the top.
Onyxia’s Lair appears on the Forever roadmap as a 40 player raid, but its attunement is unpublished. If Blizzard keeps the old chain, no key means no Onyxia.
Lore
Vaelan is Vaelastrasz, a red dragon who swore to hunt Nefarian and slipped into Blackrock disguised as one of its orcs. He needs mortals because he cannot enter the upper citadel himself without the seal.
The unadorned seal has three empty sockets, one for each legion of the lower spire: the Spirestone ogres, the Smolderthorn trolls and the Bloodaxe orcs. Seal of Ascension attunement lore says Wyrmthalak could forge it with black dragonflight fire, but his will cannot be broken, so you borrow the breath of an ancient drake whose will can.
Forever sits in its own continuity before Molten Core. What happened to Vaelastrasz in Blackwing Lair belongs to the original timeline, and Forever owes that ending nothing.
