WoW Forever Taerar Guide: Spawn, Loot, Strategy and PvP

World of Warcraft Forever Taerar is a 40-player fight against a corrupted green dragon that spawns at one of four Emerald Dream portals in Ashenvale, Feralas, The Hinterlands or Duskwood. The Taerar world boss wants one nature-resistant main tank, three spare tanks for the Shades at 75%, 50% and 25%, a fear counter on the tank, and a raid that stands on his flanks instead of in his mouth.

Kill him down to 75%, kill three Shades, repeat twice, loot. The dragon is the easy part. The other faction, riding in with the same plan, is not. Forever is the Classic+ Blizzard finally shipped. WoW Classic Plus Taerar keeps his vanilla kit, so this WoW Forever world boss guide builds on Classic numbers, because old mechanics survive every reinvention.

Where Taerar Spawns

There is no fixed Taerar spawn location WoW Forever raiders can camp. All four dragons, Taerar, Emeriss, Lethon and Ysondre, appear at the same moment, each at a random portal. Duskwood today, Feralas next time. Plan for all four.

PortalZoneCoordinatesGuards to clear
Bough ShadowAshenvale93, 38Dragonkin packs, flying patrols Dreamstalker and Phantim
Dream BoughFeralas50, 10Dragonkin packs, flying patrols Dreamroarer and Lethlas
SeradaneThe Hinterlands62, 20Dragonkin packs, overhead patrol Rothos
Twilight GroveDuskwood45, 40None, the only unguarded portal

Dream Bough sits in northern Feralas right under the Desolace border and is the longest ride for everyone. Bough Shadow is the far northeast corner of Ashenvale, and Alliance get there fastest by crossing the bridge from the Azshara side. Twilight Grove is the crater in the middle of Duskwood, which makes it the most crowded and the most griefed.

Forever has no flying mounts. A Feralas spawn still means a long run, so park a warlock or any cheap alt at each portal and let them do the waiting.

Respawn Timer

The Taerar respawn timer is shared by all four dragons. Classic players tracked it as a 72-hour cooldown after the kill, followed by a random spawn window of roughly 24 to 48 hours. Forever has not published its own number, so assume the same pattern and check the portals daily.

StageDurationWhat to do
Cooldown after killAbout 72 hoursNothing. Farm consumables.
Spawn windowAbout 24 to 48 hoursScouts at all four portals, raid on standby.
SpawnInstant, all four dragonsPull fast or lose the tag.

Raid Size and Composition

Bring 40. Smaller raids have killed him, usually after several wipes and a lot of blame. The fight is tank-heavy, because Shades spawn in threes and each one needs its own warm body.

RoleCountJob
Main tank1Holds Taerar, faces him away from the raid, eats Noxious Breath.
Shade tanks3One Shade each at every 25% threshold.
Backup tank1Catches Taerar when the main tank is feared or slept.
Healers10 to 12Priests on the main tank, druids and shamans on the raid and Shade tanks.
Ranged DPS12 to 14Mages, warlocks and hunters from max range on the flank.
Melee DPS8 to 10Side of the dragon only, never front, never back.

Each Alliance main tank group wants a priest with Fear Ward. Each Horde main tank group wants a shaman keeping Tremor Totem down. Warriors bank Berserker Rage for the roar when the ward is on cooldown.

Resistance Gear

Almost everything that hurts in this fight is nature damage: the breath, the Shade poison, the Shade acid. Nature resistance gear WoW Forever tanks bring is the difference between a clean kill and a healer blaming the tank. Nobody else needs a resistance set.

WhoNature resistance targetWhy
Main tank100 to 150Noxious Breath hits for 3000 and ticks every 3 seconds.
Shade tanks75 to 100Acid Breath stacks with no real cap.
Melee DPSOptionalPoison Clouds only if they ignore them.
Healers and rangedNoneMax range solves it for free.

Cheap sources: Greater Nature Protection Potions for the tanks, the cloak enchant for nature resistance, and Malfurion’s Signet Ring for anyone who already finished the quest chain. The Taerar world boss also drops nature resistance pieces himself, so every kill makes the next one easier.

Full Boss Abilities Breakdown

Taerar carries the shared kit of the WoW Forever Dragons of Nightmare plus three abilities of his own. He is immune to nature damage through Immunity: Nature, so moonkin and nature-spec shamans switch to something that actually works.

AbilityWhat it doesCounter
Noxious BreathFrontal cone, 3000 nature damage, 30-second DoT, adds 10 seconds to all cooldowns, stacks 6 times.Only the main tank stands in front. Backup tank ready when stacks get high.
Tail SweepRear cone around 30 yards, 925 to 1075 damage and a knockback.Nobody behind him. Ever.
Dream FogTwo drifting clouds that sleep players for about 5 seconds.Move away from clouds. Spread so one cloud cannot chain the raid.
Aura of NaturePulsing aura that interrupts eating, drinking and bandaging near the dragon.Drink at range.
Mark of Nature15-minute debuff on players who die. Getting close while marked means a 2-minute sleep.Marked players stay out until the debuff drops.
Bellowing RoarFear on everyone within about 30 to 35 yards for 4 seconds, roughly every 30 seconds.Fear Ward, Tremor Totem, Berserker Rage. Ranged at max distance.
Arcane BlastSingle-target hit for 1050 to 1350 arcane damage plus knockback.Do not stand near dragonkin packs or clouds when it lands.
Summon Shade of TaerarAt 75%, 50% and 25% he banishes himself and summons three Shades.Shade tanks grab them, raid kills them, dragon returns.
Summon PlayerTeleports a top-threat player who runs from combat back in front of the dragon.Do not kite him. It will not work.

Every Shade of Taerar has about 66,620 health, hits as hard as Taerar in melee and brings two abilities. Poison Cloud drops a stationary cloud at its feet for 350 nature damage per second over 10 seconds. Acid Breath is a frontal cone for 875 to 1125 nature damage plus a stacking 45-second DoT.

Mark of Nature turns every death into a 15-minute ban from the fight. A raid that wipes and runs straight back in is a raid that falls asleep for two minutes next to a dragon. Forever has not published its own Taerar numbers yet, so re-check health pools and damage after the first Forever patch notes.

Pull Strategy and Positioning

Here is how to kill Taerar without turning the portal into a graveyard. The shape is Onyxia with worse manners: tank faces out, raid on one flank, nothing at either end.

  1. Clear every dragonkin pack and flying patrol around the portal before anyone touches the boss.
  2. The main tank pulls and turns Taerar so his head points away from the raid.
  3. Melee take the near flank, ranged and healers the far flank at maximum range.
  4. The raid spreads loosely so Dream Fog and the fear cannot chain people together.
  5. Shade tanks stand between the healers and the dragon, ready to intercept.
  6. DPS waits for solid threat, because Noxious Breath slows the tank’s cooldowns from the first breath.

Do not fight him next to a dragonkin pack. Arcane Blast and the fear both throw players into trash, and trash in this zone hits like a raid boss’s cousin.

Phases

PhaseHealthWhat happensWhat to do
Phase 1100% to 75%Standard dragon rotation.Tank and spank, dodge clouds, cover fears.
Shades 175%Taerar banishes, three Shades appear.Druids and shamans stop healing until tanks have all three. Priests Fade if targeted.
Phase 275% to 50%Dragon returns.Main tank re-grabs him. Noxious stacks have often fallen off by now.
Shades 250%Three more Shades.Same as before. Kill them fast or Taerar returns with them still alive.
Phase 350% to 25%Dragon returns.Healers watch mana. Clouds keep drifting.
Shades 325%Final three Shades.Burn Shades, then the dragon. Cooldowns go here.

Shades chase healing threat. The first ten seconds of each Shade phase kill more healers than the whole rest of the fight. Healers stop, tanks grab, then healing resumes. If Shades live too long, the Taerar world boss unbanishes and fights alongside them, which is how wipes happen.

World PvP: Handling the Other Faction

Forever has no realms. You pick a ruleset, and everyone on that ruleset shares one world. On the WoW Forever PvP ruleset, that means far more enemy raids at the same four portals than any old server ever had, and factions still cannot group together.

  • Scouts at all four portals report spawns in guild chat before posting anything in public channels.
  • The raid forms away from the portal and arrives together, because a half-formed raid is free honor for the other side.
  • Loot belongs to whoever tags first, so the main tank pulls the moment enough of the raid is in range.
  • A PvP squad of rogues, hunters and a few healers holds the entrance and stays out of the boss fight.
  • Anyone killed by players near the fight should wait for the dragon to leave combat before running back.
  • Enemy griefers will try to drag the boss onto your healers or fear people into trash, so the flank team watches for them.
  • If the other side tags first, kill their healers during the Shade phases, when their raid is most fragile.

On the Normal ruleset, the fight is against the dragon and the tag race. On the PvP ruleset, it is a battleground with a raid boss in the middle. Budget time for both.

Loot Table

The Taerar loot table WoW Forever players will see is based on the Classic list below. Blizzard says most Forever items were reworked to be useful for more classes and roles, so stats may shift while names stay. Every dragon also drops the Nightmare Engulfed Object, which starts a quest.

The quest object goes to Keeper Remulos in Moonglade. Shrouded in Nightmare leads into Waking Legends, both reward Cenarion Circle reputation, and the chain ends with Malfurion’s Signet Ring, a stamina and nature resistance ring. Only one dragon kill is needed, not all four.

Lore

Taerar was one of Ysera’s lieutenants, set to guard the portals between Azeroth and the Emerald Dream at the Great Trees. The Nightmare got to him first and hardest. It broke his sanity and his body, leaving a specter that splits into copies of itself, which is exactly what the Shades are.

He announces himself on the pull with a promise that the Nightmare will reign, then calls the Shades his Children of Madness. Subtle he is not.

The quest chain is where the story pays off. Keeper Remulos cleanses the object in Lake Elune’ara, and a projection of Malfurion Stormrage appears to warn that Ysera’s brood has fallen to old whisperings inside the Dream. Forever runs in its own continuity set in the game’s first year, so none of the later retail history applies. In this world, the Nightmare is still winning.

Where does Taerar spawn in WoW Forever?

Taerar spawns at a random Emerald Dream portal in Ashenvale, Feralas, The Hinterlands or Duskwood, with the other three dragons.

How often does Taerar respawn?

Classic data shows a 72-hour cooldown after each kill, then a random spawn window of one to two days.

How many players do you need to kill Taerar?

Bring a full 40-player raid with five tanks, since every set of three Shades needs its own tanks.

Do you need nature resistance for Taerar?

Only tanks need it. Aim for 100 to 150 on the main tank, 75 to 100 on Shade tanks.

What does the Nightmare Engulfed Object do?

It starts a short quest chain with Keeper Remulos in Moonglade that rewards Malfurion’s Signet Ring and Cenarion Circle reputation.
