WoW Forever Turtle Hunter Pet Guide: Tames, Skills and Builds
The best WoW Forever turtle pet is one that already knows Shell Shield when you tame it: Kresh in Wailing Caverns, the Blackfathom Deeps elites, Snapjaw in Hillsbrad Foothills or the rare Cranky Benj in Alterac Mountains. Every other turtle is a slow grey rock with Bite. The family runs Health 1.00, Armor 1.13 and Damage 0.90, eats fish, fruit and fungus, and exists to get hit so you do not.
Forever pets scale from your own stats, Beast Mastery makes the pet its main damage source, and Marksmanship pays 20% extra through Lone Wolf for leaving it home. In that system a turtle has one job, and this WoW Forever hunter pet guide covers it end to end: tame spots, skill ranks, training point builds, rares, feeding and lore. Want damage? Tame a cat. Want to live? Keep reading.
Where to Tame a Turtle in WoW Forever
Tame Beast is a 20 second channel that drops your armor by 100%, and the beast must be your level or lower. Forever lets traps work in combat, so freezing an elite mid-fight finally behaves like a plan instead of a prayer. The WoW Forever turtle taming locations below are sorted by level, because every turtle attacks at 2.0 speed and only the skin and the free skills differ.
| Turtle | Level | Look | Where | Knows on tame |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Oasis Snapjaw | 15-16 | Blue | The Barrens, Lushwater Oasis about 46, 36 and Stagnant Oasis about 55, 42 | Bite 2 |
| Kresh | 20 Elite | Blue | Wailing Caverns, swims the cave waters | Bite 3, Shell Shield 1 |
| Aku’mai Fisher | 23-24 Elite | Green | Blackfathom Deeps | Bite 3, Shell Shield 1 |

| Sparkleshell Tortoise | 30-31 | White | Thousand Needles, Shimmering Flats | None |

| Ironback | 51 Rare | Grey | The Hinterlands north coast, about 83, 48 | Bite 7 |
| Coralshell Lurker | 53-54 | White | Azshara coast | None |
Coordinates mark spawn centers, not a GPS lock. Turtles wander, and Cranky Benj walks the whole shore just to waste your evening.
- Horde hunters should tame an Oasis Snapjaw at 16 for Bite 2, then swap to Kresh at 20 for the real prize.
- Alliance hunters without a Wailing Caverns group should aim for Ghamoo-ra or an Aku’mai elite in Blackfathom Deeps.
- Anyone past 30 who skipped dungeons gets Shell Shield from Snapjaw on the Lordamere Lake shore with no group at all.
- Max level collectors should tame Ironback for the grey skin and Bite 7, then relearn Bite 8 from a wolf.
- Clear the room first, because an elite with friends will end the channel and you.
- Stand at max range and place a trap between you and the turtle before you start.
- Start Tame Beast, let the trap hold it, and do not press anything else for 20 seconds.
- Feed it immediately, because every fresh tame arrives unhappy and disloyal.
Turtle Family Stats and Ranking
| Stat | Modifier | Tier |
|---|---|---|
| Health | 1.00 | Medium |
| Armor | 1.13 | High |
| Damage | 0.90 | Low |
| Attack speed | 2.0 on every tameable turtle | No fast turtle exists |
Turtles are the best tank pet in WoW Forever for exactly one reason: Shell Shield. Bears bring more health and eat anything, boars bring Charge, turtles bring a 50% damage reduction button nobody else gets. The price is the Low damage tier, and pet scaling from your stats lifts every family, so the gap should stay exactly where it hurts.
Rank them honestly. For damage, turtles sit at the bottom. For survival while soloing elites or questing above your level, they sit near the top. Pick by the job, not by the cute shell.
Turtle Pet Skills and Where to Farm Every Rank
A pet learns a skill only after you learn it yourself, either from a pet trainer or by taming a beast that knows it and using it for a while. Training a higher rank costs only the difference over the rank you already paid for, so skipping ranks wastes nothing. Your WoW Forever pet training points equal pet level multiplied by loyalty rank minus one, which caps at 300 for a level 60 Best Friend.
| Bite rank | Pet level | TP | Damage | Where to learn |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | 1 | 1 | 7-9 | Prairie Wolf, Mulgore |
| 2 | 8 | 4 | 16-18 | Oasis Snapjaw, The Barrens |
| 3 | 16 | 7 | 24-28 | Kresh or Aku’mai Fisher |
| 4 | 24 | 10 | 31-37 | Snapjaw or Cranky Benj |
| 5 | 32 | 13 | 40-48 | Sparkleshell Snapper or Mudrock Tortoise |
| 6 | 40 | 17 | 49-59 | Mudrock Snapjaw, Dustwallow Marsh |
| 7 | 48 | 21 | 66-80 | Saltwater Snapjaw or Ironback |
| 8 | 56 | 25 | 81-99 | Bloodaxe Worg, Blackrock Spire, a wolf |
No turtle knows Bite 8. Tame a Bloodaxe Worg, fight until the skill is learned, abandon the dog, walk back to your turtle. Loyalty to one pet is for people with better things to do.
Shell Shield is never sold by a trainer. Only Kresh, Aku’mai Fisher, Ghamoo-ra, Aku’mai Snapjaw, Snapjaw and Cranky Benj teach it. Tame a Mudrock turtle without learning it first and you own a level 42 paperweight with no way to fix it except taming a second turtle.
Search WoW Forever Shell Shield and the answer is short: one rank, pet level 20, 15 TP. It cuts all damage taken by 50% for 12 seconds, slows the turtle’s attacks by 43%, and sits on a 3 minute cooldown. Press it on the pull of an elite, not when the turtle is already at 5% health.
| Skill | Ranks | Max rank cost | Max effect | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Shell Shield | 1 | 15 TP | 50% less damage for 12 sec | Tame only |
| Growl | 7 | 0 TP | 415 threat | Pet trainer |
| Cower | 6 | 18 TP | 225 threat removed | Tame only |
| Great Stamina | 10 | 185 TP | +40 Stamina | Pet trainer |
| Natural Armor | 10 | 150 TP | +1000 Armor | Pet trainer |
| Each resistance | 5 | 105 TP | +140 resistance | Pet trainer |
Growl ranks unlock at pet levels 1, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50 and 60. Resistances start at 20 and step every 10 levels. Great Stamina and Natural Armor start at 10 and top out at 60.
- Cower 1 at pet level 5 comes from taming a Nightsaber in Teldrassil.
- Cower 2 at pet level 15 comes from a Savannah Patriarch in The Barrens.
- Cower 3 at pet level 25 comes from a Crag Stalker in Thousand Needles.
- Cower 4 at pet level 35 comes from a Ridge Stalker in the Badlands.
- Cower 5 at pet level 45 comes from a Jaguero Stalker in Stranglethorn Vale.
- Cower 6 at pet level 55 comes from a Frostsaber Cub in Winterspring.
Training Point Builds for a Level 60 Turtle
| Build | Skills | TP spent |
|---|---|---|
| Solo tank | Bite 8, Shell Shield, Growl 7, Great Stamina 10, Natural Armor 7 | 300 |
| Group or raid | Bite 8, Cower 6, Fire Resistance 5, Great Stamina 9, Growl off | 298 |
| PvP | Bite 8, Shell Shield, Growl 7, Natural Armor 9, Great Stamina 8 | 290 |
The solo tank is the default WoW Forever turtle build and the only one that justifies owning a turtle. The group build drops Shell Shield for Cower, because in a group a pet that holds aggro is a pet the tank wants dead. Swap Fire Resistance for whichever school the boss spits.
Best Named and Rare Turtles
No WoW Forever rare turtle has a unique model. Rares share skins with common turtles, so you tame them for free skills and bragging rights, not for looks.
- Cranky Benj is a level 32 rare with an orange look, a long patrol along Lordamere Lake and Bite 4 plus Shell Shield on tame.
- Ironback is a level 51 rare on the north coast of The Hinterlands with the grey look, Bite 7 and a respawn around 20 hours.
- Kresh is the cheapest Shell Shield in Kalimdor and the reason half the Horde hunters in the Barrens own a blue turtle.
- Ghamoo-ra is a boss you can tame, which your group will describe differently.
- Gammerita is a level 48 elite wandering The Hinterlands coast and cannot be tamed.
- Scalebeard is a level 52 rare elite in the Bay of Storms of Azshara and cannot be tamed.
- Torta is a friendly level 45 turtle in Tanaris and cannot be tamed.
Best looks by colour: blue from Kresh, green from Snapjaw, orange from Cranky Benj, white from the Sparkleshell turtles, grey from Ironback. Pick one and stop alt-tabbing to the model viewer.
Raid or PvP: What a Turtle Is Actually For
Raids want damage, and a turtle provides the least of any family while blocking your view of the boss with a shell the size of a tent. Beast Mastery raiders run a damage family, Marksmanship raiders often run no pet at all through Lone Wolf. A turtle in a raid is a Fire Resistance totem with legs.
Dungeons are better. A turtle holds adds off the healer and Shell Shield covers a bad pull. Solo play is where it shines: elite quests, grinding above your level and killing things that would eat a cat.
The WoW Forever hunter pet PvP verdict is blunt. Turtles cannot learn Dash, so any class with a speed boost walks away from them, and Low damage means nobody is afraid. Shell Shield keeps the pet alive through burst, which only matters if the pet was doing something worth keeping.
| Content | Turtle verdict |
|---|---|
| Leveling and elite quests | Excellent |
| Dungeons | Good off-tank |
| Raids | Bad |
| Battlegrounds and world PvP | Weak |
Feeding, Happiness and Loyalty
Turtles eat fish, fruit and fungus. Use Feed Pet out of combat, and food close to the pet’s level restores more. WoW Forever pet happiness directly scales damage, so a starving turtle hits even softer than a well fed one, which is an achievement.
| Happiness | Damage dealt | Loyalty |
|---|---|---|
| Happy | 125% | Rises over time |
| Content | 100% | No penalty |
| Unhappy | 75% | Falls |
Loyalty climbs through six ranks from gaining experience and spending time happy. Each rank adds training points. Letting the pet die repeatedly, dismissing it constantly or starving it drains loyalty, and a pet with bottomed out happiness and loyalty leaves you.
| Loyalty rank | Name | TP at pet level 60 |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Rebellious | 0 |
| 2 | Unruly | 60 |
| 3 | Submissive | 120 |
| 4 | Dependable | 180 |
| 5 | Faithful | 240 |
| 6 | Best Friend | 300 |
Turtle Lore in World of Warcraft: Forever
Forever is set in the first year of World of Warcraft, after the Forsaken Kingdom campaign and before Molten Core, so every turtle here is an old world turtle. The Oasis Snapjaws of the Barrens drink from oases fed by strange fissures, and Tauren druids collect their altered shells to learn what the water does to beasts.
Blackfathom Deeps holds the drowned temple of Elune, where the Aku’mai turtles serve the ancient hydra Aku’mai. The Snapjaws of Lordamere Lake live in sight of Dalaran, and nobody in the city has ever asked them anything.
Two turtles are famous without ever being pets. Gammerita roams the Hinterlands coast as a quest target, and Torta waits in Tanaris for Tooga, a small turtle that players escort across the desert because apparently love needs a bodyguard.
Where do I get Shell Shield for a turtle in WoW Forever?
Tame Kresh, Ghamoo-ra, an Aku’mai elite, Snapjaw or Cranky Benj, since no trainer sells Shell Shield to hunters.
What food does a turtle pet eat?
Turtles eat fish, fruit and fungus, and food close to the pet’s level restores noticeably more happiness per feeding.
Is a turtle a good raid pet?
No. Turtles sit in the Low damage tier, so raids prefer damage families while turtles belong in solo play.
How many training points does a max level turtle have?
A level 60 turtle at Best Friend loyalty has 300 training points, enough for Bite 8, Shell Shield and Stamina.
Is there a rare turtle worth taming?
Cranky Benj and Ironback are tameable rares with free Bite ranks, but both share their models with common turtles.
